When the Atlantic seaboard was winning its Revolution against England, and the new West, undecided which camp to join, hung back, one mane stood out among the scattered handful of pioneers who were opening the great road to the plains… …a stirring blend of biography, Americana, and history restoring in complete, human, authentic detail one of the most thrilling stories in our American past. In pages as exciting as an old dime novel, John Bakeless introduces to us all Daniel Boone—trapper, Indian fighter, contact to the forest people, surveyor of the Dark and Bloody Ground, law-giver to unruly frontier settlers, pathfinder, hunter… a figure already half-legendary in his own time. To explore the legend and recreate reality is John Bakeless’s achievement in this unmatched adult biography of a man and an era. Drawing upon much hitherto unpublished material, he sorts fact and fancy to provide this documented portrait…and at the same time, a stirring chronicle that captures the spirit of these uniquely America,
Daniel Belknap (1771-1815)
Daniel Belknap was a farmer, mechanic, and singing-master in Framingham, Massachusetts, who compiled four sacred and one secular tunebooks. These featured his own sacred compositions as well as those by other New England composers. While Belknap was not as flamboyant, prolific, nor as innovative as his contemporaries, he nevertheless provided fitting and eloquent religious and social music for his own and neighboring communities.

A unique figure in the world of contemporary art, Daniel Brush is in equal measure artist and craftsman. Over the course of forty years, Brush has created an unparalleled body of work, whose scope ranges from large-scale abstract drawings to sculptures in steel, aluminum, and gold. Collected here are more than 150 objects that bring to the fore Brush s astonishing work with jewels. Far from the products of the world of commercial jewelry, these are jewel-encrusted objects of virtue and fantasy that reflect not just the artist s rigorous personal aesthetic and mastery of technique, but his lifelong fascinations with philosophy and Asian thought, and his exhaustive knowledge of the history of precious stones. With photography made of the objects in situ inside Brush s studio in New York City, this book presents not only a catalog of his jewel work to date, but also an ethereal portrait of the artist himself. Housed in a slipcase, with photographs by Takaaki Matsumoto and an illuminating text by Vivienne Becker, this is an intimate study of the work of a master artist and a beautiful object in itself.

Thirteen-year-old Daniel Barker is a typical boy, except that he has a magical book from Egypt which gives him 99 wishes. This Scrivener book was passed down from his grandmother to his mother to him. He receives it on his tenth birthday. The rules in the book say that the wishes must be used to make the world a better place. If not, the Mummy's Blight will be awakened. To make a wish, Daniel must write a hashtag and then the wish. In primary school Dan is like a superhero, doing lots of great things to help animals and people in the community. Then he goes to high school. Things start off well, and he becomes known as Dan the Man. Peer pressure to use the wishes as pranks then takes over. To try and stop the continual pressure, Daniel decides to write a wish which sets a fire near the school tuckshop. He hopes this will also impress Charmaine, the cutest cheerleader who has shown an interest in him. This sets off a chain of events which Daniel has to try and stop. The warning verse in the Scrivener book starts to glow and Daniel knows he is in deep trouble. Is it the Mummy's Blight and how will Dan stop his favourite teacher from becoming a zombie?

Number one is God. Number 2 is everyone else. Number 3 is you.Daniel said, "How about a prayer first?"Jerry got up, grabbed a blanket, sat down on the couch, and invited me to sit next to him. When prayer was over, I said to him, "Jerry, the thing that is causing you so many problems right now is that you're trying to be number one instead of number three. You want to be noticed, and behaving as you are now doing will get you noticed, but it won't be the attention you want. You want to be noticed with love, and you can only achieve your goal by being number three. It's the law of retaliation. The more love you can share with others, the more you'll receive, and in the end, you will receive much more than you have given.""Really?"I laughed. "Really. In basketball you don't even realize how generous you are; you are totally unselfish. You will pass up an open shot to give your teammates an opportunity from a better position. You don't even think about it; you just do it. Your teammates love and respect you for your thoughtfulness. You are the best shooter on the floor, and they will turn to you when the game is close, but you allow them-no you help them- to become a part of the glory. And even if a player misses an easy layup, you always go over and give him words of encouragement. You are number three on the court, and as a result you're number one in their hearts."
