DARLENE'S AWAKENING is the story of a younger, adult, Negro Female as she evolved from a sheltered, na ve and inexperienced person in the 1950s. The repetitive life experiences in the familiar environment she had grown accustomed to were accepted without question. In a remote area of her unraveling, she was aware there was more in store for her than what seemed obvious as she participated in her daily routine. Venturing beyond familiar locations in her imagination offered inviting exploration. The promise of change, the possibility of new experiences was awaiting her discovery. She knew her desires were available, but had not the slightest idea of when, where, or how they would manifest. Her religious training, her place in society as a second class citizen, the role she had been assigned like many of her peers had been accepted without question. One of the legacies of slavery was religion and the Negro Community was inculcated with devout beliefs. Evidentiary indications were apparent as Negro female domestics who crossed the BAILEY on their bus ride each day in route to their various destinations with faces buried in their Bibles. Their holy books were major crutches that many clung to while searching for a realization that offered freedom from anguish. Other buttresses may have been available but were not as apparent. Attempting to hold onto that which promised a better future, their Bibles offered unquestioned assistance as Colored females faced their day-to-day obligations. Some of the obligatory duties went beyond their apparent job description.

Star of the Week: A Story of Love, Adoption, and Brownies with Sprinkles
The husband-and-wife team behind this book drew on their own adoptive daughter's experience in creating this accessible, appealing story celebrating the love of families everywhere. When it's Cassidy-Li's turn to be Star of the Week at school, the spunky kindergartener gets to create a poster about herself. She has pictures of all the important people in her life--with one big exception. Cassidy-Li, adopted from China when she was a baby, doesn't have a photo of her birth parents. But with a little help from her family, she finds a special way to include them. Cassidy-Li's thoughts and questions about her birth family will resonate with adopted children and serve as a springboard for discussion in homes and classrooms. This picture book gently explores what adoption means for growing children--the questions adopted children have don't stop as they grow older. Any young reader who feels that their family structure is unusual will find a reflection of themselves in Cassidy-Li's struggle to define her own family.

Featured in the film Twenty Feet From Stardom, the woman whose voice the New York Times said "is as embedded in the history of rock 'n' roll as Eric Clapton's guitar and Bob Dylan's lyrics" tells her storyRight out of high school, Darlene Love began singing lead vocals for legendary producer Phil Spector, cutting such classic hits as the number one "He's a Rebel," "Da Doo Ron Ron," and "He's Sure the Boy I Love." As part of the girl group the Blossoms, she held a regular spot on television's Shindig , and with Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans she toured the country.Later, she sang backup--and collected numerous scintillating backstage stories--with, among others, Dionne Warwick, the Mamas and the Papas, and Sonny and Cher. Now in My Name Is Love, Darlene is ready to tell her tales about Elvis coming on to her backstage during his famous '68 Comeback Special, about wild parties she witnessed at Tom Jones's house, and about her love affair with Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers. She also recalls how she found herself cleaning houses in Beverly Hills, heard herself on the radio, and vowed to make a comeback. That comeback has included roles in all of the Lethal Weapon movies, starring roles on Broadway, and headlining concert appearances worldwide.A dishy, behind-the-scenes showbiz memoir, My Name Is Love is also the inspiring story of a woman who refused to give up.
