The extraordinary transformation that has taken place in Darlington since the eighteenth century is illustrated in this fascinating collection of photographs, mostly from the Northern Echo. The images give an insight into the daily lives and living conditions of local people and the town during a period of unprecedented change. For centuries Darlington was a market town; but the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825 changed all that. The railway focused the attention of the world on this small town and set the pattern for the development of railway systems throughout Britain and beyond. Darlington first became famous for its railway engineering, then for a succession of other diverse industries. All aspects of Darlington are featured; famous occasions and individuals, as well as the impact of national and international events on the town. This is a striking account of the many changes that have altered Darlington's appearance, and recalls what the town has lost and gained in terms of buildings, traditions and ways of life. Recent regeneration is also included here and the book is a celebration of the character and energy of Darlington throughout history.

Darlington’s history is popularly seen as the story of Quakers and railways but there is much more to the town’s past than this. From its beginnings as a Saxon settlement, it became the southern stronghold of the land of the Prince Bishops, a market town, had its own Great Fire long before London, provided inns for travellers along the Great North Road, became an industrial centre and faced the twenty-first century with a diversified economy as the old heavy industries closed. Along the way, as the town grew rapidly in the nineteenth century, it was a group of Quaker Darlington businessmen who masterminded the beginnings of Britain’s railway system in the town. This book will look back over the centuries to uncover the fascinating history of the town. Stories of the town’s rebels, reformers, activists, benefactors, heroes and campaigners, England’s first black professional football player, as well as the lives of the ordinary folk, bring the history to life, together with illustrations to show where reminders of the town’s past can still be found. Illustrated throughout, this accessible historical portrait of the transformation that Darlington has undergone through the ages will be of great interest to residents, visitors and all those with links to the town.

Darlington is rightly famous for its involvement in the introduction and subsequent development of the railways in the UK. As such, it carries responsibility for shaping not just regional change on a huge scale in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries but, even more importantly, social, commercial and industrial change in the country as a whole. The railways have left the biggest mark on the town and the impact locally of the Stockton & Darlington Railway and of its subsequent developments is covered, from its opening in 1825 to today’s celebration of the town’s railway heritage at ‘Head of Steam’, the former Darlington Railway Centre and Museum. Through a selection of old and new photographs and an incisive and informative text, Darlington Through Time traces the development of the town, from its importance as a medieval market centre through to its IT and engineering prowess in the twenty-first century, and is essential reading for anybody who knows and loves this historic town.

During the Second World War, Darlington had a number of industries that were important to the war effort. With its historic links to the railway industry, the town possessed several engineering firms, as well as a number of companies that produced iron and steel products, and many of these companies switched some or all of their production over to wartime demands. The town also had an extensive rural hinterland and the farmers of Teesdale were faced with a barrage of new demands and regulations governing their vital work. Many residents of the area served as members of the armed forces and losses were grievous: the number of Darlington men killed while serving with the RAF was particularly high, with the impact of these losses spreading throughout the community. Despite many setbacks, Darlington was very efficient in bring its Air Raid Precautions and civil defence services up to full strength. With Britain facing invasion in 1940, many older men in the area, along with those younger men who were in reserved occupations, volunteered to serve in the Local Defence Volunteers (later the Home Guard) and one man was still serving at the age of 89. Thankfully, Darlington did not see the heavy bombing that many other communities in the North East of England suffered. However, there were still a large number of accidents in the area caused by the blackout, resulting in a number of fatalities. Locals also had to deal with rationing and not all were willing to pull together, seeing the wartime conditions, instead, as an opportunity to make illegal profits.

Darlington is perhaps best known for its importance in railway history, but it was already an ancient town when early locomotives were developed there. Bishop Hugh Puiset?s great 12th-century church stands in soaring testimony to the medieval importance of the town. ?A delightful book ... which gives an excellent overall view of Darlington?s history ... will be a treat for any Darlingtonian ... Darlington Meier Architekten operate confidently on a variety of scales – from housing to urban-planning interventions. The Zurich office’s sense of the effect of classic concepts characterises its designs, as do its harmonious use of materials and the goal of creating locations with a specific identity. The architects are clearly influenced by Peter Zumthor, in whose practice they both worked as Project Managers before founding their own office in 2004. Their design for the Mathilde Escher Home for disabled adults in Zurich is an example of confident urban-planning placement that is equally able to ensure an agreeable residential atmosphere. From Victoria Day to Labour Day, for seventy-nine years Gary Cole has lived at and wandered the sands of Bowmanville's West Beach. During that time he has garnered an immense amount of knowledge about that magical place. In this book, Gary shares this knowledge in a very informative and entertaining way.As a toddler in 1942, Gary took his first tentative steps on the front porch of his parents' cottage and during research for this book, Gary once said to me: "I may not have been born on West Beach Rick, but I'm pretty sure I was conceived here."Perhaps no similar small vacation area in this province has the unique character of Bowmanville's West Beach. Growing up there was like growing up in a small Ontario village, with the cottages being the backbone of that village. For over one hundred and twenty years West Beach has been a place where everybody knew your name. It is truly a place like no other - a unique part of Bowmanville's history.
