But everything changes with the arrival of a new refugee neighbor, Jay, the son of god. When Jay decides to join Darryl's band, they discover the most potent force of all time: the power of METAL. Beginning with The Jazz Singer (1927) and 42nd Street (1933), legendary Hollywood film producer Darryl F. Zanuck (1902–1979) revolutionized the movie musical, cementing its place in American popular culture. Zanuck, who got his start writing stories and scripts in the silent film era, worked his way to becoming a top production executive at Warner Bros. in the later 1920s and early 1930s. Leaving that studio in 1933, he and industry executive Joseph Schenck formed Twentieth Century Pictures, an independent Hollywood motion picture production company. In 1935, Zanuck merged his Twentieth Century Pictures with the ailing Fox Film Corporation, resulting in the combined Twentieth Century-Fox, which instantly became a new major Hollywood film entity. The Golden Age Musicals of Darryl F. Zanuck: The Gentleman Preferred Blondes is the first book devoted to the musicals that Zanuck produced at these three studios. The volume spotlights how he placed his personal imprint on the genre and how—especially at Twentieth Century-Fox—he nurtured and showcased several blonde female stars who headlined the studio’s musicals—including Shirley Temple, Alice Faye, Betty Grable, Vivian Blaine, June Haver, Marilyn Monroe, and Sheree North. Building upon Bernard F. Dick’s previous work in That Was Entertainment: The Golden Age of the MGM Musical, this volume illustrates the richness of the American movie musical, tracing how these song-and-dance films fit within the career of Darryl F. Zanuck and within the timeline of Hollywood history.

This is a print on demand (POD) book with color photos. The paper and photo quality in this book, although good, often does not match the original version but the information remains the same. The 1960s and 1970s were a time of artistic excess. Crazy outfits, new-found freedoms of the boomer generation, and the hippie movement, all created an explosion of style completely unique to the period and generation. The 1960s and 1970s were also a time of intense automotive enthusiasm. New car launches every September were greeted with anticipation, muscle cars with excessive horsepower were the norm, and the average Joe was rodding and racing every weekend. When these two forces came together, the results were unforgettable. A new breed of car was developed-the Show Rod. These creations were never intended for use on the streets, and many of them were never intended for any use at all. Customizers designed and built them to attract huge crowds to the big car show circuit that was travelling the country at the time, and in that they certainly succeeded. What began as visions of futuristic cars eventually morphed into cartoon-like representations of cars. Things got wilder when the model car industry got involved, and then television shows and pop music acts jumped in too. Icons like Barris and Roth, household names even to fringe car guys, made their name in this era, as did others like Gene Winfield, Dean Jeffries, Candy Joe Bailon, Bob Reisner, Darryl Starbird and Tom Daniel, all important characters in promoting, designing and building this insane pieces of rolling artwork. This completely unique book is a round-table discussion featuring all of these great customizers discussing the era, their builds, and each others rods as well.

IntroductionGeorge Young and Darryl Curson have been lifelong friends since they were toddlers on St. Mary Street in Shelbyville, Indiana in the early 1950s. They attended the same Shelbyville schools through high school and ultimately college at Indiana University, Bloomington. Something in their early surroundings nurtured a basis for their shared appreciation of odd absurdities of life. Perhaps it was the DDT mosquito fogging trucks that frequently sprayed St. Mary Street during the hot summers. George has always enjoyed sharing his awful jokes and puns with family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances. Darryl has always expressed his sense of humor via his cartoons and caricatures. Both these friends eventually left their hometown to pursue their careers, only occasionally meeting at class reunions. After retirement, they re-connected via a hometown Facebook page, Darryl publishing a daily cartoon strip and George posting daily humorous one-liners. Thus the idea to collaborate on an illustrated book of hilarious one-liners was launched. They ultimately settled on producing what you see in this book. DedicationThis book is dedicated to the battle against the opioid epidemic that is so profoundly impacting our country and specifically the hometown of George & Darryl. Our families have deep roots in Shelby County going back to the early 19th century. We want to give back to our community and help fight this problem. The devastating effects of opioids are dramatically changing the character of this small Hoosier town and is tearing at the very fabric of the community. The royalties generated by this book will be exclusively directed to Shelby Co, Indiana solely toward fighting the drug crisis, raising awareness of the disease of addiction and the opioid epidemic that has ravaged our hometown. It is also our hope to bring a few smiles along the way. Thank you
Former baseball slugger Darryl Strawberry, whose achievements on the field were often overshadowed by his struggles off the field, recounts the highs, the lows, and the lessons learned along the way that allowed him to survive. The youngest son of Henry and Ruby Strawberry, Darryl grew up in one of Los Angeles's toughest neighborhoods but channeled his energy into basketball and baseball. The New York Mets drafted him in 1980, and he was voted the National League Rookie of the Year in 1983. Strawberry went on to be the first National League player voted to the All-Star Game in each of his first four full seasons. Throughout the eighties and nineties, however, Strawberry faced many challenges off the field, including tax evasion, drug use, solicitation, and allegations of domestic assault. His seasons with the Dodgers, Giants, and Yankees were interrupted by suspensions, visits to rehab, treatment for colon cancer, and time in prison. But in 2006, Strawberry's life dramatically changed course. He married and devoted himself to his church and his work with children and adults affected by autism and other developmental disorders. For the first time, in his own words, Darryl Strawberry delivers his inspirational narrative, the extraordinary story of his life.
In this surprising and moving memoir, the legendary rap star and cofounder of Run D.M.C. keeps it a hundred percent, speaking out about his battle with depression and overcoming suicidal thoughts--one of the most devastating yet little known health issues plaguing the black community today. As one third of the legendary rap group Run D.M.C., Darryl "DMC" McDaniels--aka Legendary MC, The Devastating Mic Controller, and the King of Rock--had it all: talent, money, fame, prestige. While hitting #1 on the Billboard charts was exhilarating, the group's success soon became overwhelming. A creative guy who enjoyed being at home alone or with his family, DMC turned to alcohol to numb himself, a retreat that became an addiction. For years, he went through the motions. But in 1997, when intoxication could no longer keep the pain at bay, he plunged into severe depression and became suicidal. He wasn't alone. During the same period, suicide became the number three leading cause of death among black people--a health crisis that continues to this day.In this riveting memoir, DMC speaks openly about his emotional and psychological struggles and the impact on his life, and addresses the many reasons that led him--and thousands of others--to consider suicide. Some of the factors include not being true to who you are, feelings of loneliness, isolation, and alienation, and a lack of understanding and support from friends and family when it's needed most. He also provides essential information on resources for getting help. Revealing how even the most successful people can suffer from depression, DMC offers inspiration for everyone in pain--information and insight that he hopes can help save other lives.

Occupancy Estimation and Modeling is the first book to examine the latest methods in analyzing presence/absence data surveys. Using four classes of models (single-species, single-season; single-species, multiple season; multiple-species, single-season; and multiple-species, multiple-season), the authors discuss the practical sampling situation, present a likelihood-based model enabling direct estimation of the occupancy-related parameters while allowing for imperfect detectability, and make recommendations for designing studies using these models.
Occupancy Estimation and Modeling: Inferring Patterns and Dynamics of Species Occurrence, Second Edition, provides a synthesis of model-based approaches for analyzing presence-absence data, allowing for imperfect detection. Beginning from the relatively simple case of estimating the proportion of area or sampling units occupied at the time of surveying, the authors describe a wide variety of extensions that have been developed since the early 2000s. This provides an improved insight about species and community ecology, including, detection heterogeneity; correlated detections; spatial autocorrelation; multiple states or classes of occupancy; changes in occupancy over time; species co-occurrence; community-level modeling, and more. Occupancy Estimation and Modeling: Inferring Patterns and Dynamics of Species Occurrence, Second Edition has been greatly expanded and detail is provided regarding the estimation methods and examples of their application are given. Important study design recommendations are also covered to give a well rounded view of modeling.
