George Washington

George Washington's long career as a soldier began with defeat as a young line officer in the bloody frontier skirmishes of the French and Indian War; it culminated in the role of commanding general of the Continental army in victory over the British army. This soldier's life included long years of Spartan campaigning, the creation of a professional army, the honing of innovative tactics and strategies, and the development of crucial international military alliances. In this history of George Washington's career as an army officer, Dave Palmer reveals the many qualities of character that made Washington an extraordinary military commander, qualities that allowed him not only to lead a fledgling army to secure the independence of his newly formed country but to define the role of the military in a free and democratic society.
George Washington’s military strategy has been called bumbling at worst and brilliant at best. So which is it? Was George Washington a strategic genius or just lucky? So asks Dave R. Palmer in his new book, George Washington’s Military Genius. An updated edition of Palmer's earlier work, The Way of the Fox, George Washington’s Military Genius breaks down the American Revolution into four phases and analyzes Washington's strategy during each phrase. "The British did not have to lose; the patriots did not have to triumph," writes Palmer as he proves without a doubt that Washington's continuously-changing military tactics were deliberate, strategic responses to the various phases of the war, not because he lacked a plan of action. Confronting the critics who say Washington's battlefield success and ultimate victories were a function of luck, George Washington's Military Genius proves why the father of our country also deserves the title of America's preeminent strategist.

Dave is an eighteen-year-old blind, quadriplegic victim of medical negligence. He is highly intelligent, has an almost photographic memory, and is capable of absorbing knowledge at a phenomenal rate. Dave's world revolves around the antics of his dysfunctional, avaricious, unloving family and everything he learns from BBC Radio 4 which provides a link to an outside world he knows he will never belong to. Life is bleak for Dave.Until he meets the one person who may be able to save him."Just when I'd thought things had got as bad as they could get, they got even worse. There's a singer called Morrissey who writes songs about stuff like this, and even he would struggle to make this sound as miserable as it is."

For all the people who believe they are this 'sort of person', and wonder why, with some types of people, in certain situations, they become someone else? This pithy little book is for you.For example, Part of you is reading this book right now, while another Part is probably thinking about all the other things you could be doing. Most of us live our lives unaware of which Part of us is taking the lead at any one particular time. This book will give you the opportunity to connect with your inner Parts and (re)establish your Self as their leader. This shift in viewing your inner world as comprising 'Self' and 'Parts' is seismic and transformational. The book is thus divided into two sections. Section 1: Getting to Know Your Inner Family, introduces you to the different members of your inner family, aka your inner 'Parts'.Section 2: The Self Leadership Journey, takes you and your inner Parts on a journey of personal healing and growth developed by Richard Schwartz . To bring this journey to life, I've chosen an example of a person who has Parts that are driven to succeed, and yet remembers the discomfort of failing, and fears failing again. You'll notice that the pages of this book are intended to be read in pairs. In the printed book, the left hand pages have poem-like accounts and instructions on how you can grow your Parts' trust in your Self Leadership. If all of this sounds too abstract, then you'll find everyday examples on the right-hand side pages. So we hope you enjoy transforming your relationships with your Parts and the people around you. Because with a team of Self Led Parts within you, you'll find your life flows and fulfills. Without that inner friction, you'll have more energy to build supportive relationships with people around you. And that makes achieving what you want that much easier and enjoyable. Here's to contributing to a Self Led World of calm curiosity, clarity, compassion, connectedness, creativity, courage and confidence.

British Railways Station Totems: The Complete Guide

This is a second and completely revised edition of a book first published in 2002 which has been long out of print and is now much sought after. There has always been something special about those classic British Railways totem station signs that no other item of railway memorabilia possesses. They recall a railway system that, for better or worse, was far removed from that of today, when life was simpler and less formulaic, when stations were welcoming locations rather than barrier-laden fortresses, and signage was straightforward but still informative.Totems were deceptively simple in terms of their design and typography but clear, easy to recognise and colour coded for the various BR regions. They were found on stations across the network from Penzance to Wick and from Fishguard to Cromer. They told you what you needed to know and no more, they were standardised throughout the railway system, and have rightly earned their place in the ranks of collectible railwayana, with some examples reaching five-figure sums at auctions. This volume is as close as it is likely to get to a definitive book on all aspects of BR totems. Across its 350 pages are to be found 2,214 images - including 2,250 totems - 43 maps and a wealth of relevant statistics. For collectors of railwayana, students of design and for all those with an interest in railway history, this book will be both a visual delight and a reference source to be referred to again and again.

Pride of Smoketown: The 1935 Pittsburgh Crawfords

The 1935 Pittsburgh Crawfords team, one of the dominant teams in Negro League history, is often compared to the legendary 1927 "Murderer's Row" New York Yankees. The squad from "Smoketown"-a nickname that the Pittsburgh Courier often applied to the metropolis better-known as "Steel City"-boasted four Hall-of-Fame players in outfielder James "Cool Papa" Bell, first baseman/manager Oscar Charleston, catcher Josh Gibson, and third baseman William "Judy" Johnson. The team also included such stalwarts as Sam Bankhead, William Bell, Jimmie Crutchfield, Andrew "Pat" Patterson, Leroy Matlock, and Sam Streeter. With a roster full of such illustrious stars, it is easy to see why the Crawfords were dominant. Nonethless, the team unexpectedly had to scratch and claw its way to the Negro National League pennant by defeating the New York Cubans in a thrilling seven-game championship series. This book includes articles on the players from the 1935 squad, as well as one who was absent. The Crawfords might have dispatched the Cubans more easily had they retained the services of pitcher Satchel Paige, a fifth Hall of Famer who had been a member of their 1934 squad. However, Paige and Crawfords owner Gus Greenlee were at odds and Paige shunned the Crawfords in 1935, although his shadow still loomed large over the Pittsburgh franchise. In light of Paige's prominence and the fact that he had been expected to pitch for the Crawfords, a feature article about his accomplishments in 1935 and a game article about his failure to appear for game at Yankee Stadium in September of that year also are included here. This volume contains exhaustively-researched articles about the players, front office personnel, Greenlee Field, and the exciting games and history of the team that were written and edited by 25 SABR members. The inclusion of historical photos about every subject in the book helps to shine a spotlight on the 1935 Pittsburgh Crawfords, who truly were the Pride of Smoketown.
