The Constitution and America's Destiny

The Constitution and America's Destiny

David Brian Robertson

Cambridge University Press

In this ambitious study, Robertson explains how the US Constitution emerged from an intense battle between a bold vision for the nation's political future and the tenacious defense of its political present. Given a once-in-a-lifetime chance to alter America's destiny, James Madison laid before the Constitutional Convention a plan for a strong centralized government that could battle for America's long-term interests. But delegates from vulnerable states resisted this plan, seeking instead to maintain state control over most of American life while adding a few more specific powers to the existing government. These clashing aspirations turned the Convention into an unpredictable chain of events. Step-by-step, the delegates' compromises built national powers in a way no one had anticipated, and produced a government more complex and hard to use than any of them originally intended. Their Constitution, in turn, helped create a politics unlike that in any other nation.

Capital, Labor, and State

Capital, Labor, and State

David Brian Robertson

Capital, Labor, and State is a systematic and thorough examination of American labor policy from the Civil War to the New Deal. David Brian Robertson skillfully demonstrates that although most industrializing nations began to limit employer freedom and regulate labor conditions in the 1900s, the United States continued to allow total employer discretion in decisions concerning hiring, firing, and workplace conditions. Robertson argues that the American constitution made it much more difficult for the American Federation of Labor, government, and business to cooperate for mutual gain as extensively as their counterparts abroad, so that even at the height of New Deal, American labor market policy remained a patchwork of limited protections, uneven laws, and poor enforcement, lacking basic national standards even for child labor.

Blessed and burdened with a strange gift for empathy, Charissa Dryden-Burnet stands trial for eco-terrorism in her home town of Edmonton, escapes from a Canadian-owned island prison off the Florida coast, and journeys home to Canada across a continent altered by climate change and political catastrophes. Set in the near future, her story explores love, loss, hope and ambition with plenty of humour and a sharp satirical edge. Reviews: "This lucidly-written novel is both witty and penetrating. A cautionary tale well worth reading." "Charissa's Shoes is a visionary novel that speaks to the reader on many levels.... I strongly recommend that anyone with a taste for clever satirical political and social commentary rush out and buy this brilliant piece of work." Amazon reviews: "Charissa's Shoes is a satiric, dystopian novel that is both absurd and prophetic. It is a startling reflection on the potential for cyber terrorism in the modern era. It was written before the Trump era, and mostly takes place in Canada, but some of the ludicrous behaviour of people seeking power could have been taken from today's news."

"You will be mine, little darling: for death is my life."When fate draws together the lives of two young women, their mutual attraction quickly flourishes into a bond which threatens the boundaries of social etiquette in 1860s Styria. As their relationship continues to develop, they remain oblivious to the growing horror which surrounds them. Throughout the province other young women are dying in mysterious circumstances. Meanwhile, people begin falling victim to the apparently random attacks of a rampaging pack of wolves. When, finally the truth is revealed, the scene is set for a battle between two ancient evils.Years before the publication of Bram Stoker's Dracula, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu produced a haunting Gothic mystery titled Carmilla. David Brian has used much of the original narrative to create a very different version of Carmilla.Introducing an array of new characters, and touching on subjects which would have been considered taboo in the 1800s, Brian has succeeded in bringing a whole new level of horror, and tragedy, to the legend of Carmilla.

This book is a step-by-step, tutorial-driven guide to game or application development using Panda3D that follows the process used in professional development. You will learn through first-hand experience how a Panda3D developer goes from literally nothing to a finished product. Along the way there are illustrations to explain difficult topics and to display the results of progress, as well as a complete archive of thoroughly explained code for every tutorial. Every single code file the reader saves is mirrored in the example code, finished and explained. In addition, every art and audio asset required by the tutorials is provided, so the user need not provide any assets of their own. If you are an independent developer interested in creating your own video games or other 3D applications using Panda3D for personal or commercial distribution at minimal expense, this book is definitely for you. A basic understanding of general programming, such as familiarity with the concept of a variable, is necessary. Some familiarity with object-oriented programming and the Python language is expected, but not essential. This book does not cover the creation of three dimensional models or similar art assets, nor does it cover the creation of two dimensional art assets or audio assets.
The Status, Rights and Treatment of Persons with Disabilities within Customary Legal Frameworks in Uganda
Little is known about the interaction of customary law and disability rights. This research based on a case study in Uganda offers a window into how a customary legal frameworks can impact the status, rights and treatment of persons with disabilities. Dr Dennison highlights the particular importance of cultural beliefs and attitudes about the capacity and functionality of persons with disabilities in informal legal settings. This is true in the Eastern African context of the Mukono District, in the Central Region of Uganda, but also more widely on the whole African continent. The work concludes by outlining practical change strategies for those seeking to improve the status, rights and treatment of persons with disabilities in settings where customary law plays an influential and effectual role.
