People's behaviour can be rewarding to others through what they say or do: it may be no more than an appreciative smile, a sympathetic touch or a word of praise, but the impact can be highly significant. This book, first published in 1993, explores these social rewards and their relevance to the practice of people in the interpersonal professions. While much of its content is relevant to everyday life, the focus is on ways in which an understanding of the working of social rewards can benefit such groups as teachers, doctors, social workers, counsellors, nurses and managers in their interaction with their patients, clients and pupils. In exploring the nature and distribution of social rewards, the authors introduce the concept of interpersonal skill, and discuss a range of theoretical perspectives to account for the consequences of responding positively to others. The effects of promoting interpersonal attraction, the establishment and regulation of relationships, and the ethical issues involved in conferring power and facilitating influence are also discussed. With its discussion of theory and research linked to explicit practical applications, Rewarding People will be of interest to students in the areas of communication, psychology and business studies.

Billy Dickson could have easily stepped away from the faith because he personally suffered hurt and rejection in the church. Instead, Billy offers Biblical solutions and hope for the church. Pastor Bryan GallowayConverge Churchwww.convergechurchomaha.org My name is Marcus Brown. I am the Director of Mentoring at Release Inc., a local non-profit agency that serves families and youth in the greater Omaha area through several impactful programs.Billy Dickson has been a faithful mentor in our mentoring program. He has mentored several youths and has always shown kindness, consistency, love, and compassion toward each youth's struggles and journeys. Mentors like Billy have allowed this program to continue to be so impactful in our community. We need Christian men who are not afraid to stand on biblical truths and Christian standards and share the gospel with today's youth, our next generation. It is a pleasure to support Billy in his book and endorse his efforts in our mentoring program. Marcus Brown Billy Dickson is a one-of-a-kind person (which is why I enjoy him), so it is not unusual that his latest book fits that same description. This book is his story of how several different churches he was a part of became uncomfortable when he didn't fit the mold of everyone else in the church. As a result, they left him with no place to minister with them. This book not only tells that part of his story but also includes some of his thoughts as to how the church could improve. Billy knew becoming bitter was an option, but not the path he wanted to follow. Hopefully, this book will cause you to think about your own experience in the body of Christ. Holocaust Fiction and the Question of Impiety

This book discusses the issues underlying contemporary Holocaust fiction. Using Gillian Rose’s theory of Holocaust piety, it argues that, rather than enhancing our understanding of the Holocaust, contemporary fiction has instead become overly focused on gratuitous representations of bodies in pain. The book begins by discussing the locations and imagery which have come to define our understanding of the Holocaust, before then highlighting how this gradual simplification has led to an increasing sense of emotional distance from the historical past. Holocaust fiction, the book argues, attempts to close this emotional and temporal distance by creating an emotional connection to bodies in pain. Using different concepts relating to embodied experience – from Sonia Kruks’ notion of feeling-with to Alison Landsberg’s prosthetic memory – the book analyses several key examples of Holocaust literature and film to establish whether fiction still possesses the capacity to approach the Holocaustimpiously.

As rich and diverse as its subject, Dickson's magisterial history brings 1,400 years of Dublin vividly to life: from its medieval incarnation through the neoclassical eighteenth century, the Easter Rising that convulsed the city in 1916, the bloody civil war following the handover of power by Britain, to end-of-millennium urban renewal efforts.

The focus of this book is on the two major areas of risk theory: aggregate claims distributions and ruin theory. For aggregate claims distributions, detailed descriptions are given of recursive techniques that can be used in the individual and collective risk models. For the collective model, the book discusses different classes of counting distribution, and presents recursion schemes for probability functions and moments. For the individual model, the book illustrates the three most commonly applied techniques. Beyond the classical topics in ruin theory, this new edition features an expanded section covering time of ruin problems, Gerber–Shiu functions, and the application of De Vylder approximations. Suitable for a first course in insurance risk theory and extensively classroom tested, the book is accessible to readers with a solid understanding of basic probability. Numerous worked examples are included and each chapter concludes with exercises for which complete solutions are provided.
