M. Butterfly: With an Afterword by the Playwright
Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play, nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and soon to be back on Broadway in a revival directed by the Lion King's Julie Taymor, starring Clive Owen "A brilliant play of ideas... a visionary work that bridges the history and culture of two worlds."--Frank Rich, New York TimesBased on a true story that stunned the world, and inspired by Giacomo Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly, M. Butterfly was an immediate sensation when it premiered in 1988. It opens in the cramped prison cell where diplomat Rene Gallimard is being held captive by the French government--and by his own illusions. He recalls a time when Song Liling, the beautiful Chinese diva, touched him with a love as vivid, as seductive--and as elusive--as a butterfly. How could he have known that his true love was, in fact, a spy for the Chinese government--and a man disguised as a woman? The diplomat relives the twenty-year affair from the temptation to the seduction, from its consummation to the scandal that ultimately consumed them both.M. Butterfly is one of the most compelling, explosive, and slyly humorous dramas ever to light the Broadway stage, a work of unrivaled brilliance, illuminating the conflict between men and women, the differences between East and West, racial stereotypes--and the shadows we cast around our most cherished illusions. The original cast included John Lithgow as Gallimard and BD Wong as Song Liling. During the show's 777-performance run, David Dukes, Anthony Hopkins, Tony Randall, and John Rubinstein were also cast as Gallimard. Hwang adapted the play for a 1993 film directed by David Cronenberg, starring Jeremy Irons and John Lone. TEXT OF THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY PRODUCTION

Rouse, a Council official, is visiting the theatre run by Mike Pemberton-Hawkesley, and his mission is simple: to save the Council money. His brainwave is to turn the theatre into a storage facility for files; Mike, understandably, is outraged. Mavis Dinwiddy - intervenes and the hilarious absurdity of the situation, compounded by Rouse's very idiosyncratic verbal style, is maintained right up to the end of this surprising and enigmatic play. Simple to stage - no set is required - this is an ideal festival piece.
The Championship: The Story of the 1969 University of South Carolina Football Team
The game of American Football is in its 144th year. The modern-day game of football took its present form about 100 years ago when the NCAA was formed. It is not my intention to give a history of the game, but to give you, my reader a glimpse into what life was like for a college football player at the University of South Carolina in the second half of the 1960s. The game of football is genius, and although there have been some minor rule changes, the game we played then, is the same game played today. Only the strategies have evolved along with the popularity of the sport. Life as a college football player in the 1960's did afford time for other endeavors and fun, so also within these pages are tales of fraternity life that are straight out of the movie "Animal House" and travel adventures that spanned this great country all the way to the 'Last Frontier'. The 60's were a time of generational and cultural transformation. We, as student athletes, were dealing with this transformation as was everyone else. In football at South Carolina, there was a major coaching change that complicated life at the same time. But we did come together as players and coaches and we accomplished something that had never been achieved before at South Carolina. The 1969 South Carolina Football team went undefeated in conference play and won the ACC Championship. I was fortunate to have played on the team. While life as a student-athlete wasn't always easy, I am grateful for the opportunity to compete as a Gamecock and to have received a stellar education. I am equally grateful for the people I have met along the way, many who have become lifelong friends. We were able to capture our first Conference Championship together and I think all of us-fans, coaches, staff and players, cherish those memories more each day. I feel certain that very soon, another team of South Carolina athletes, coaches and staff will not only win Conference Championships, but will create memories, they too can cherish for a lifetime. I hope you enjoy this journey from the gridiron at the University of South Carolina to the wilds of Southeastern Alaska almost as much as I did taking it. As the only son of a wealthy mill owner in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England, Jonathan Lucas is destined to become a millwright and a mill owner in northeast England like his father John Lucas. He lives a protected life behind the walls of his father's reputation and business success. The challenges of coming of age in the 1760's are soon approached by the young Jonathan, as he enters an apprenticeship with his Uncle William Lucas. He travels to Manchester, which is far away from his mother and father's loving care. He encounters many adventures as he learns and loves his way toward adulthood and hopefully, a successful career of his own. Jonathan must choose between two beautiful girls that enter his life in a most memorable way. One is the epitome of beauty, grace and refinement. She is the lady that most women aspired to become in eighteenth century Great Britain. The other is a fiery, auburn-headed beauty that stirs passions deep within the men who meet her. Her family's background gives his parents pause concerning this most desirable woman. The American Revolution profoundly affects the fortunes of Jonathan's family, as well as all businessmen in Britain, America, and most of the trading nations of the world. It prematurely ends the apprenticeship that he was serving with his father's brother William and brings a threat from an old friend of the family that is most unexpected and unwelcome. Returning to Whitehaven, Jonathan takes a wife and starts a family of his own. Tragedy strikes and changes the course of his life. Thrust into a new role as a father and head of his own household, Jonathan continues to be confronted with difficulties, in both his business and personal life. He is offered an opportunity that would not only change his future, but change the world. Life, love, and destiny are put to the test as Jonathan comes face to face with what could be catastrophe or incredible fame and fortune. This story is the first in a series of books that will follow this important genius and his descendants as they move from Merry Old England to the Low Country of Antebellum South Carolina, to become "The Rice Kings." Follow Jonathan as the abrupt changes of his world throw everything he knows into turmoil. Check out the website: https: //www.davidhenrylucasbooks.com
