This richly photographed volume is a celebration of what is, at once, an ancient symbol of shelter and harvest and, as well, a quintessential American architectural form. Widely revered yet steadily vanishing from our cultural landscape, the barn is an expression of pastoral romance, honest effort, painstaking craftsmanship, and tradition - a tradition that we are in danger of losing. Barn: Rescue and Adaptation, Revised and Expanded is a magnificent, abundantly illustrated volume that examines the remarkable story a true architectural icons. In this authoritative exploration, the authors, both practitioners of barn restoration and historic-barn moving, offer a tribute and guide to the many extant forms of American barn, following the evolution of the form from this country's earliest days, and, as well, tell the story of their efforts to restore, adapt, and repurpose these simple, soulful structures. Barns embody the ethos of another age and harken back to those days when the world moved more slowly, an ethos still to be found in these beautiful buildings - yet, due to the ravages of time, weather, and neglect these essential American edifices are threatened, as never before. This volume reminds us that barns are as much a part of us as our love of apple pie, and as such should be cherished for their artistry and cultural significance. This revised and expanded edition of Barn coincides with the premier of the PBS series Barnstruck and describes the process of barn preservation through relocation, focusing on the work of The New Jersey Barn Company, whose dedicated efforts over 35 years have saved more than 150 structures.
The Lasting Legacy of Colonial Cemeteries in South Asia

The Lasting Legacy of Colonial Cemeteries in South Asia

The Lasting Legacy of Colonial Cemeteries in South Asia explores the interplay between architecture and historical memory, highlighting how colonial cemeteries serve as enduring reminders of the British Empire in the region. During British rule, nearly two million Europeans were interred in government-controlled cemeteries, which not only housed their remains but also chronicled the expansion of Britain’s Indian Empire, its military endeavours, and commercial activities. After India gained independence in 1947, these cemeteries were transferred to the new governments, which showed little interest in their upkeep. The British High Commission attempted to manage them through local Christian committees, but this initiative faltered by the late 1950s due to funding issues. In response to the rapid decay of these sites, the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia (BACSA) was formed to preserve these historical markers and the colonial memories they embody in a changing postcolonial landscape.

Founder of Teen Challenge Shows How to Overcome Persistent SinsThis is David Wilkerson's capstone teaching, poured out from a heart that discovered the power God has given his people to triumph over sin. Through Wilkerson's expert ability to blend teaching with personal application, he shows that the key to defeating life-controlling habits is found in one thing: the new covenant God enacted with his people. In today's era of pop psychology, most Christians battle temptation and sin through self-help techniques or gritty self-will. Even Wilkerson, through decades of ministry that led hundreds of thousands to salvation and deliverance, struggled to know true peace as he battled his own "besetting sins." Determined to find victory, Wilkerson came to grasp the stunning reality that the vast love of God provides the spiritual resources believers need to obey his every command.Gathered from some of his most prominent sermons, this is one of Wilkerson's most powerful teachings--one that will redeem countless lives into the life-giving experience of purity.
