Of all the New Testament writings Luke-Acts focuses particular attention on rich and poor, possessions and poverty. The Poor and Their Possessions is a new edition of a Cambridge doctoral dissertation that has long been out of print. The author's exploration of Luke's thinking is of special importance for Christian preachers, so much effort has gone into making it accessible and readable. Who are the poor? Why are they favored? Did Jesus have a program of social reform? Is renunciation of possessions demanded of all Christians? What guidance does Luke give on the use of possessions? Did the early church have a community of possessions? To whom was Luke's material targeted? What was its purpose? These and other questions find their answers in the book. Besides its clear argument, this book is a treasure store of careful study of some difficult but important passages from Luke and Acts.
Dracula was in fact the historical Prince Vlad III of Rumania or Wallachia. Vlad III the Prince and the all powerful ruler of the large and very rich province of Wallachia which today is part of modern Rumania was the sworn enemy of the Ottoman Empire which in the 15th Century was threatening European and Christian civilisation by its invasion of the Balkans. It had already vanquished and conquered Constantinople in 1453 and was launching strong military attacks against King Boris of Serbia and King Mathias Corvinus of Hungary as well as the Princes to the south such as Vlad III. A battle was looming between approximately 30,000 troops of Vlad III which he had raised by calling on his Boyars (nobleman) to provide him with their retinues of men-at-arms, cavalry and artillery. Vlad was assembling a large and powerful force of infantry, cavalry hussars as well as artillery and bombards which was the precursor to the modern mortar. His enemy was Mehmed II the grand ruler of the Ottoman Empire. The date of this battle was to be the 17th June 1462 which was a Thursday and the attack would take place at Vlad IIIs initiative in the middle of the night of a full Moon. At this time the powers of Vlad were enhanced by his necromancy and black magic crafts of sorcery and special demonic arts.

Familiar narratives about the nature of English modernism, "tradition," and "periodization," together with the "literary" character of English art from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, are abandoned in this innovative and important book. In their stead, David Peters Corbett proposes a new way of looking at this painting from the Pre-Raphaelites to the Vorticists. Arguing that art history has been too reluctant to confront the fundamental question of how and what the consistency and application of paint signifies, Corbett investigates the work of English artists—among them Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Leighton, Watts, Whistler, Sickert, and the modernists of 1914 —through a historical examination of the meanings of the visual in English culture. By revealing that for many artists and thinkers the visual promised to deliver a more profound understanding of the world than language, the book offers a new reading of the art of the period between 1848 and the First World War.

Selected by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2003The word "violence" conjures up images of terrorism, bombings, and lynchings. Beaten Down is concerned with more prosaic acts of physical force—a husband slapping his wife, a parent taking a birch branch to a child, a pair of drunken friends squaring off to establish who was the "better man." David Peterson del Mar accounts for the social relations of power that lie behind this intimate form of violence, this "white noise" that has always been with us, humming quietly between more explosive acts of violence.Broad in its chronological and cultural sweep, Beaten Down examines interpersonal violence in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia beginning with Native American cultures before colonization and continuing into the mid-twentieth century. It contrasts the disparate ways of practicing and punishing interpersonal violence on each side of the U.S.-Canadian border. Del Mar concludes that we cannot comprehend the causes and moral consequences of a violent act without considering larger social relations of power, whether between colonizers and original inhabitants, between spouses, between parents and children, or between and among different ethnic groups. The author has drawn on a vast array of vivid sources, including newspaper accounts, autobiographies, novels, oral histories, historical and ethnographic publications, and hundreds of detailed court cases to account for not only the relative frequency of different forms of violence, but also the shifting definitions and perceptions of what constitutes violence. This is a thoughtful and probing account of how and why people have hit each other and the manner in which opinion makers and ordinary citizens have censured, defended, or celebrated such acts. Del Mar's conclusions have important implications for an understanding of violence and perceptions of violence in contemporary society.
