Jacob Morais is just a normal kind of guy. He enjoys his life, with no big worries and certainly no dark forebodings of the kind that torment tinfoil-hatted survivalists. Then comes the shocker, the election of a dangerous buffoon as US president, a grotesque incompetent who's manifestly unfit for office. Foreseeing wide scale disaster, Jacob stores emergency supplies in his basement and buys a gun. Meanwhile back in his day-to-day world he is recruited by an old friend to join her hot e-commerce start-up. When evidence surfaces that sketchy Russian investors are using the start-up as a front, Jacob agrees to help his friend expose the investors' criminal scheme. The investors are suspicious and homicidal and Jacob's life is on the line. It's not the collapse of public order for which he prepared but it has the same imperative: Do what you must to survive.

The poems of an architect whose affection for urban reality and imagined space is as evident in his writing as in his buildings and drawings. The poems of John Hejduk are almost nonpoetic: still lives of memory, sites of possessed places. They give a physical existence to the words themselves and an autobiographical dimension to the architect. Architect Peter Eisenman likens them to "secret agents in an enemy camp."Writing about Hejduk's poems in 1980, Eisenman observed, "Walter Benjamin has said that Baudelaire's writings on Paris were often more real than the experience of Paris itself. Both drawing and writing contain a compaction of themes which in their conceptual density deny reduction and exfoliation for a reality of another kind: together they reveal an essence of architecture itself." This is the first comprehensive collection of Hejduks poems to be published outside an architectural setting.

The plot of the book is about how the rule of law functions to protect corporate structures that facilitate the commission of globalized fraud and abuse. The rules of law are used to dilute and hide accountability of high managerial agents and controlling persons, performing as a tool in aid of centralized and concentrated capital interests, devouring and destabilizing small-to-medium-sized companies. The theories and concepts developed in the book chapters are explored then applied to a real case and controversy—a mega-fraudulent bankruptcy in Argentina. In the zone of the world’s largest grain manufacturing and exporting port complex, the VICENTIN SAIC default illustrates poignantly the premises of the book. The book will be a good tool to illustrate to students how globalized financial capitalism may perform predation of other actors in a given domestic real economy; what are the origins and abuses of corporate law in the transnational context; what factors influence the economies of emergent countries in Latin America; and what should be the protective role of law. These concepts can be learned and applied in higher education and post-degree students through this study of allegations of mega-fraud arising from the VICENTIN complex of companies based in Argentina, including consideration of the role of Glencore Ltd.

of witnesses and on confessions, and the prevention of crime. In 1900, Alfred Binet, the French psychologist who developed the first standard ized intelligence test, the Stanford-Binet, testified in court about the use of psychological tests with delinquents and criminals. These tests were later used in large scale for screening potential police as well as criminals and by World War II in the 1940's, were used in many different ways to classify and design treatment for soldiers. In fact, the use of scientific psychometric tests has continued to be one of the strong assets the psychologist can bring to the law. In 1911, a Belgium psychologist, Varendonck testified that child witnesses did not have the mental capacity of adults and their testimony should not be admitted in courts. That same year, a German psychologist, Carl Marbe testified about proximate cause in a civil lawsuit. He described the psychological experiments used to determine that alcohol can have a negative impact on a person's reaction time and subsequent behavior. In the United States the introduction of expert witness testimony took a similar route. In 1921 a case called, State v. Driver recognized that a psy chologist could be an expert on juvenile delinquency, but the court rejected that psychologist's testimony, anyhow. One of the first cases that set the standards of admitting all experts, including psychologists, called the Frye standard was decided in 1923.

Our later years need not be a time of loss. This book helps readers embrace the positive possibilities of aging and provides guidance on doing so purposefully, with courage, compassion, and curiosity. In their bestseller Repacking Your Bags, Richard Leider and David Shapiro defined the good life as living in the place you belong, with people you love, doing the right work, on purpose. This book argues that aging well can be similarly defined as aging in the place you belong, with people you love, doing the right 'work, ' on purpose. This book began as a conversation between two old friends during a rained-out baseball game, reflecting on the fact that, while society revers old friendships, they are dismissive of old people. How can we push back against the attitude that old age is nothing more than a gradual decline, and reframe it as a liberatory experience? What does old really mean? In what do we anchor our sense of identity as our life circumstances change? How do we deal with health challenges in an enlightened way? Aging is not a disease; it is a design problem. Redesigning our lives as we enter this new phase requires that we learn to grow whole, not old. And that means exploring the path of purposeful aging.

Abstract Expressionism

Abstract Expressionism was the dominant movement in experimental American painting from the 1940s through the early 1960s. This book is a collection of articles, reviews and essays that chronicle the history of the movement. Drawing upon a range of sources, including newspapers, magazines and exhibition catalogues, the original debates about the validity of ‘action painting’ are dramatically illustrated, and can be compared with later, retrospective views. The articles selected for the volume include classic statements from the most influential and prolific critics, including Clement Greenberg, Harold Rosenberg, and Hilton Kramer. However the Shapiros have also striven to include iconoclasts from the 1950s and 1960s such as Leon Golub and John Canaday to suggest the full range of critical discussion. Six representative artists are the subject of extended sections that include biographical chronologies, reviews, and the artists’ own comments: Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Franz Kline, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko.
