David Hockney. My Window
'For me, it's really the joy of looking out into the world and getting this positive energy... It's opening up our vision, and how we look'—David HockneyWhen David Hockney discovered the iPhone as an artistic medium, it opened up entirely new possibilities for his art. He made his first digital drawings in spring 2009, describing the morning landscape in broad lines and dazzling colors directly on a display that offered subtle hues as unmixed expressions of pure light. Then in 2010, Hockney started working with an iPad, and the larger screen expanded his artistic repertoire and enabled an even more complex interplay of color, light, and line. Each image in this book captures a fleeting moment seen through a window in Hockney’s Yorkshire home: from vibrant sunrise and lilac morning sky to peaceful night-time impressions or the sudden arrival of spring. Fascinating details reveal drops on window panes, distant lights in the night, reflections on vases or an abundance of varied window-sill vegetation. In 120 drawings made between 2009 and 2012, selected and arranged by the artist himself, we experience the passage of time through the eyes of David Hockney. This artist’s book, which first appeared in an exclusive signed edition, now returns as an unlimited run, whose still generous XL format presents Hockney’s impressions in brilliant resolution. So now is the perfect occasion to heed the advice of the Times critic regarding this book: “If you would like to be given a bouquet by David Hockney, here is your chance.”

The Queen's Window by David Hockney Westminster Abbey
The Queen's Window was designed by renowned artist David Hockney for Westminster Abbey and unveiled in autumn 2018. The work was commissioned to celebrate the reign of Queen Elizabeth II as England's longest-serving monarch. The resulting design is a vibrantly coloured and quintessentially English country scene featuring a Yorkshire landscape with the hawthorn blossom that Hockney loves. In an extended conversation between Hockney and fellow-artist Tacita Dean, the artist reflects on his approach to the design and his use of colour, as well on the underlying themes that the window represents.

Steel Wind is a piece of historical detective work that explains how Colonel Georg Bruchmuller, an obscure German artillery officer recalled from retirement, played a pivotal role in the revolution of offensive tactics that took place in 1917-18. Ironically, the methods developed by Bruchmuller ultimately were rejected by the German Army of World War II, but they were taken up and applied with a vengeance by the emerging Red Army. The Soviets further developed Bruchmuller's principles and incorporated them into their doctrine, where they remain to this day. Through Soviet doctrine, they have become fundamental to the practice of many other armies. Bruchmuller's influence in shaping the former Soviet Army has also been mirrored in the shape of those armies designed to oppose it.

As a companion to The Wind Ensemble Sourcebook and Biographical Guide, this catalog provides a comprehensive listing of wind ensemble works from 1650 to the present. These two volumes will be completed with a third, The Wind Ensemble Thematic Catalog 1700-1900. Representing more than 20 years of research through libraries, monasteries, and castles, the authors used primary sources when possible rather than relying on secondary sources. The authors collected a vast array of information from public and private international collections. This catalog is an exhaustive guide to international wind ensemble collections. The authors have been careful to match up various versions of the same work, and, for the first time, arrangements—an important and large part of the repertoire—are dealt with in a systematic fashion. Unique in its extensive documentation and reliance on primary sources, The Wind Ensemble Catalog is an important research tool for scholars and musicians.

This is the story of a general practitioner and his patients. The scene is Victoria in the mid-twentieth century. Many of the changes which revolutionized-medicine, antibiotics, immunization and blood transfusions-were yet to be made. Conditions were hard, transportation primitive and hospital facilities scarce. The innovating doctor met a public that was often cautious and suspicious, if not actively hostile. In these circumstances Dr Browne struggled for better health care in three country areas. He built his own hospital at Cobden. He campaigned for the immunization of children against diphtheria. Under shocking conditions he carried out one of the earliest blood tranfusions in Victoria. For fifty-three years he worked with imagination, compassion and dedication to improve the health of his patients. At a time when general practice was threatened by the rush to specialization. Dr Browne's memoirs are not simply fascinating; they are a warning of the danger of our losing the personal relationship and commitment which has characterized general practice in the past.

378 AD. Great Jaguar Paw, the Lord of Tikal, sent his third daughter to marry the son of one of the lords of Teotihuacan in Central Mexico in fulfillment of an alliance. Thirteen years later, Lady Jaguar Claw returns with her husband, Spearthrower Owl, who has been chartered to deliver a prophecy and establish a new order in the jungle cities. He orders Born of Fire, his warlord enforcer, to execute his wife's family and erase even the memory of her father and the former rulers. Battered by bouts of anger, bitterness, and guilt, Lady Claw descends into an abyss of depression and despair. Her birth prophecy said she would battle a mighty demon amidst "powerful winds and waves." This is the story of that battle and her triumphant rise from the abyss. This story of empowerment is an immersion in the life, times, customs, and environments that contributed to the uniqueness of ancient Maya civilization. Based on decades of archaeological, ethnographic and anthropological research, Jaguar Wind And Waves is not a fantasy novel about the "mysterious" Maya. Rather, it depicts real people facing universal human challenges at a time when their civilization was flourishing in the jungles of Central America. As such, it's an excellent book for those who have visited or plan to visit, archaeological sites in Mexico, Guatemala or Belize.

THE WIND STILL MOURNS is the culmination of David Heller's reflections on the Holocaust, first studied as an adult while completing his honors thesis at Harvard. With this compendium of poetry, Dr. Heller brings a survivor- child's heartfelt emotions along with his scholarly perceptions to capture the agony and horror of man's inhumanity. At the same time, he expounds on the infinite lingering questions of faith and doubt that follow the Holocaust, as well as the very nature of mankind. Among the topics that his poems address are the following: his father's harrowing experiences and losses, the anatomy of evil, the contempt of "the other", fascism, the world's indifference and passivity, the mixed nature of life, the importance of remembrance, making sense of the senseless, the question of justice, modern versions of Nazism, the struggle over faith, and the unique life journey for a descendant of the Holocaust legacy. These selections are as moving as they are thought-provoking, as relevant today as they were in the last barbarous century.

Before Elizabeth David died in 1992 she and her editor, Jill Norman, had begun work on a volume of The Best of but then her health deteriorated and the project was shelved. The idea was revived in 1996 when chefs and writers and Elizabeths many friends, were invited to select their favourite articles and recipes. Some sent notes explaining their choice, others provided an anecdote or a recollection about her, others sent lists of recipes they had been using for years. This book is the fruit of that harvest of recommendations and the names of the contributors, who number among them some of our finest food writers such as Simon Hopkinson, Alice Waters, Sally Clarke, Richard Olney, Paul Levy and Anne Willan, appear after the pieces they had chosen along with their notes. The extracts and recipes which make up South Wind Through the Kitchen are drawn from all Elizabeth Davids books, namely A Book of Mediterranean Food, French Country Cooking, Italian Food, Sumer Cooking, French Provincial Cooking, Spices, Salt and Aromatics in the English Kitchen, English Bread and Yeast Cookery, An Omelette and a Glass of Wine, and Harvest of the Cold Months. There are over 200 recipes in the book organised around courses and ingredients such as eggs and cheese, fish and shellfish, meat, poultry and game, vegetables, pasta, pulses and grains, sauces, sweet dishes and cakes, preserves, and bread, all interspersed with extracts and articles making it a delightful compendium to dip into as well as cook from.

Over thirty years ago, New Mexico Men's Wellness sponsored the publication of a men's poetry anthology, Talking from the Heart. Now, A Wind Blows Through Us, celebrates that first collection as well as the beauty and promise of the current male experience. As was said in the first anthology "Each poem is a glimpse into the rich interior life of the man who wrote it. We believe that the avenues leading to healing and reconciliation, to redefinition and harmony, are revealed in the mysteries of poetic language. Each poem is a message sent from one human heart to another
