This book of honest, poignant reflections follows the journey of growth and transformation of one mother as she navigates the early years of parenting her three young sons. What she finds is that the daily responsibilities and challenges of motherhood can also become a profound spiritual journey. A testimony to how motherhood can spark deep insight, this book shows the ways that our children, and the process of parenting them, can teach us some of the greatest lessons of life: how to love more deeply, how to be more present, and how to find compassion in the rough spaces.
Deborah C. Payne's ground-breaking study traces the historical origins of a dilemma still bedevilling theatre companies: how to reconcile audience demand for novelty with profitability. As a solution, English acting companies in 1660 adopted an unprecedented theatrical duopoly. Implicit to its economic logic were scarcity, prestige, and innovation: attributes that, it was hoped, would generate wealth and exclusivity. Changes to playhouse architecture, stagecraft, dramatic repertory, and company practices were undertaken to create this new, upmarket theatre of “great expences.” So powerful was the promise of the duopoly and so enthralling the wholesale transformation of the theatrical marketplace that management—despite dwindling box office—resisted change for 35 years. Drawing upon network and behavioural economic theory, Professor Payne shows why the acting companies clung to an economic model inimical to their self-interest. Original archival research further bolsters this radically new perspective on an exciting and crucial period in English theatre. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
Plurilingual and Intercultural Pedagogy for All in Higher Education provides a compelling rationale and practical approach for the integration of diverse voices and languages within the educational offering on postgraduate English-medium instruction programmes in higher education. In making its case for plurilingual and intercultural approaches to English-medium education, the book critically engages with themes such as English-medium instruction pedagogies, interculturality, internationalisation at home, language commodification, language ideologies and student mobility. It catalogues and draws upon existing bi/plurilingual approaches to teaching and learning on English-medium instruction academic modules to propose a pedagogy tailored to such modules in global higher education. Designed to appeal to lecturers responsible for constructing syllabi and teaching and learning activities for English-medium instruction modules, the book presents a constructively aligned pedagogic approach and a sound rationale for integrating multiple student languages into academic modules. This enables educators from all disciplines to incorporate diverse perspectives into their syllabi and teaching. This book is essential reading for educators across disciplines who wish to embrace linguistic and cultural diversity in their teaching. The internationally adaptable pedagogy presented will also be of interest to researchers, students, and policymakers working in higher education.
Childhood anxiety disorders represent one of the most common psychological disorders found among the general population. They can be serious, distressful, and functionally impairing, so much so that there has been an explosion of interest in their treatment, primarily from pharmacological and cognitive-behavioral perspectives.Addressing these perspectives is the Second Edition of Child Anxiety Disorders. Beidel and Alfano pay close attention to new pharmacological and psychological interventions as well as multi-center trials that compare single and combined treatment modalities. Additionally, they include new case studies, sections on stability of childhood fears and the longitudinal course of anxiety disorders, and a new chapter on sleep and anxiety disorders. Written on the cusp of newly published information and studies, Child Anxiety Disorders is relevant, informative, and indispensible.
This work examines the widespread use of contractors by the military to help fill the massive and complex logistical requirements of a modern military force. Ms. Kidwell examines the use of Private Military Companies (PMC) as far back as the American Revolution and follows their evolution through the War with Mexico, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and the first Gulf War. She then analyzes the use of PMCs in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Ms. Kidwell concludes that PMCs will be an increasingly important facet of US military operations for the foreseeable future; however, the use of contractors on the battlefield is not a panacea for all logistics problems. Originally published by the US Army. (Ms. Kidwell is currently an Assistant Professor of Military History at the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.)

What if we teach young people to use something well that they currently use poorly? What if this "something" not only increases their interest in what they are learning-and by extension, their motivation to learn- but also meets the kinds of curriculum requirements that teachers need to teach (especially 21st century skills and common core skills)? What if this something also helps prepare them for life after graduation by reinforcing the very same skills that employers require? Every adult - parent and educator - knows that inspiring the innate desire to learn is the key, not only to student success now, but also in the future. Yet a great majority of young people feel that what they are learning in school is divorced from the kinds of things that truly interest them. How to inspire this critical desire to learn? Connect what they are learning - not just the content, but the skills - to activities that already inspire them. This recipe simply must include learning to use social media. Instead of blocking it during the school day, and constantly saying "NO ", parents and educators should embrace social media as one of the most inspiring ways to teach 21st century skills. In Social Media Fascination, Deborah C. Owen describes a model of teaching social media that puts Care/Serve at the center of all interactions. This is a far cry from how most people currently use social media, which is usually, "It starts with me". This model then adds Collaborate, Curate, Create, Communicate, and Connect through Community as other "facets" of use that must be incorporated, not just because they are fun and engaging - and part of the 21st Century Skills model - but because they are the kinds of skills employers are actually looking for. To build this model on real-world experience, Deborah C. Owen interviewed a number of internet and social media "gurus" with tremendous knowledge in each of these facets. These guests are: Chris Brogan, Marcus Sheridan, Mike Koenigs, Hiten Shah, Pat Flynn, Danny Iny, Guillaume Decugis, Jeff Brown, and Tim Grahl. Portions of each interview are included in the chapters supporting each facet. So who is this book for? It is for any adult - parent or educator - who would like to understand social media better. It's for any adult who is tired of emphasizing the dangers of social media, and instead wants to emphasize the positive uses that are possible. It's for anyone who wants to connect with like-minded people from around the world, and who wants to create and innovate in new, unexplored ways. In short, it's for anyone who believes that we can make a difference in the world through communicating well in connected communities, based on sharing information. This book is for anyone who is online. It's even for you
