An introduction to a priest, bishop, and legal scholar who was a prophetic voice in the fight for equality.Walter DeCoster Dennis (1936-2003), suffragan bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of New York, played a key role in many of the civil rights battles of his time. In this book, historian Rosemary Gooden, introduces Dennis and chronicles how his training as a legal scholar informed his ministry.Dennis was deeply involved in many social justice issues that are still with us today, including battles over racial equality, LGBT rights, abortion rights, and the legalization of marijuana. As she examines Dennis's often controversial involvement in the public square, Gooden offers reflections on ways that his prophetic vision can still be influential.
Just Language: Walter Benjamin, German-Jewish Exile, and the Critique of Linguistic Violence
Just Language revisits the Weimar period and its representation in the postwar years to explore narratives of linguistic resistance in the works of Walter Benjamin, Theodor W. Adorno, Hannah Arendt, and Paul Celan. How did this generation of exile writers grapple with their experiences of oppression and persecution? How did they create a language of resistance during the decades that prepared the Third Reich and the Shoah? Facing the devastations of World War I, the book explores how Walter Benjamin analyzed language's ability to radically break the cyclical violence of war and examines his opposition to expansionism and imperialism in Weimar education and culture. Based on Benjamin's analysis, Johann en traces the postwar responses of Hannah Arendt and Paul Celan. While Arendt proposed strategies of metaphorical thinking to counteract the formation of totalitarianism, Celan mobilized silence as a poetic counterforce against oppression and erasure. Just Language argues that every linguistic act and practice, no matter how small or marginalized, entails the ethical task of opposing the normalization and institutionalization of political violence. By tracing how Benjamin and his interlocutors struggled against German fascism, Johann en presents a memory-based critique of linguistic violence, opening a dialogue between German-Jewish writers and today's debates on non-discrimination, propaganda, and social justice.

Success Is My Only Sickness: Epic of an Enigma - Walter Grant

Walter Grant, by his superlative performance as a life insurance salesman and sales office manager, wrote his name indelibly in the pages of history. He broke all records qualifying for every prestigious award and designation including Top of the Table membership of the international Million Dollar Round table (M.D.R.T). He rose from humble deep rural origins in Jamaica but was never constrained by the poverty of his early circumstance. His steely resilience was forged by the harsh fire of infant abandonment by his parents, child labor, near death encounter with warring political party sponsored gangs, a decade long career in Jamaica's police service as a fearless detective, fathering seven children with five different women, breaking in his rebellious sons, and taking down the competition in life insurance sales as "hard as they came" at him. In the fifty seven years that he lived, Walter Grant's achievements are surpassed by few who lived longer or are celebrated as the "greats" of all time. He amassed a fortune which enabled him to afford the best medical care in the world after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July 2016, which resulted in his passing fifteen months later. This book traces Walter Grant's footsteps from his humble beginnings, his school days, work experiences, amazing achievements, and terminal illness, all of which brought to light the greatness of his competitive spirit that made him such a great model of success. The book reveals how he epitomized "The Man Without a Doubt" which the Author, Hylton Dennis, characterized him as at the start of the book. It shows a man who was never afflicted by low self esteem, championing his cause as well as he championed the cause of others, and leaving an enormous immortal legacy of "Winning Against all Odds". Walter Grant was known by his inspirational utterances including: "People buy difference not similarity or popularity"; "None of us have any control over our situation, how we respond is what makes the difference"; "Challenges are what motivate me"; "The only thing I know to do is fight"; "Success is the way for me"; "Having a degree is not doing the job, it's the passion, respect and love for people"; "When you give first-class service it will sell you"; "True success is when you help other people to reach their goals"; "Client satisfaction is what drives me"; and "Jack Panino chicken say him no bawl fi feather him bawl fi life". Walter Grant left an indelible mark wherever he went. On October 7, 2017, Sagicor Life Insurance Company posthumously inducted him into its Sagicor Hall of Fame at its Sagicor Legacy Ball. This coincided with the first anniversary of his passing. In reflecting his life, the book reveals that though he lived a relatively short time Walter Grant lived a full life. He touched lives and made an impact on his community in many ways. The level of respect and love that people had for him was shown at the final gathering to celebrate his life. It was impossible to facilitate presentation of all the tributes that those whose lives were touched by him wanted to give there. While he had reason to believe his passing was imminent and did his best to prepare himself and his loved ones for his departure from physical life, his family and friends were shocked to the core when it occurred. Nevertheless, they found some comfort in the fact that, once again, he defied the odds, surpassing doctor's expectation by surviving longer with the terminal cancer than they had pronounced that he would survive. Walter Grant "fought a good fight" to the very last, crowning the impressive record of performances established throughout its years. Brevity was no indictment Substance was all that mattered and Walter Grant poured its Success type into his life, so that it overflowed the bounds of his numbered days. The tremendous positive impact that this book will make on everyone that reads its cannot be exaggerated. The proof will be in the reading it

During the 1960s, Dennis Hopper carried a camera everywhere—on film sets and locations, at parties, in diners, bars and galleries, driving on freeways and walking on political marches. He photographed movie idols, pop stars, writers, artists, girlfriends, and complete strangers. Along the way he captured some of the most intriguing moments of his generation with a keen and intuitive eye. A reluctant icon at the epicenter of that decade’s cultural upheaval, Hopper documented the likes of Tina Turner in the studio, Andy Warhol at his first West Coast show, Paul Newman on set, and Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. From a selection of photographs compiled by Hopper and gallerist Tony Shafrazi, this extensive volume, finally back in print in a new edition, distills the essence of Hopper’s prodigious photographic career. Also included are introductory essays by Shafrazi and legendary West Coast art pioneer Walter Hopps, as well as an extensive biography and new afterword by journalist Jessica Hundley. With excerpts from Victor Bockris’s interviews of Hopper’s famous subjects, friends, and family, this volume revives an unprecedented exploration of the life and mind of one of America’s most fascinating personalities.
