Limits of Persuasion

Limits of Persuasion

Donald D. Halstead; Michael Libal

Praeger Publishers Inc

This book provides both a unique, first-hand account of German and European diplomacy in the early stages of the Yugoslav crisis and a detailed analysis of the major issues. By correcting the many misperceptions and misjudgments about that period, the book will put the debate on Western involvement in the former Yugoslavia on a new and more solid basis. This book presents both a detailed historical account of German diplomacy in the first year of the Yugoslav crisis and a thorough analysis of the issues that Germany and the international community faced at the time. Written by the German diplomat responsible for the conduct of German policy on the working level, the book is a compelling, first-hand view of the motives, perceptions, and actions of the German government. Part I is a chronological treatment of the responses of the European Community and of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe to developments on the ground—in particular, the military conflict in Croatia and the German role in shaping these responses. Part II provides a systematic treatment of the causes of the conflict and the major issues raised by the Yugoslav crisis, such as questions concerning self-determination, frontiers, the role of history, and the recognition of successor states. Taken together, the two parts provide a comprehensive analysis of the origins of international involvement in the Bosnian war. This book will interest scholars, researchers, and policymakers involved with the Bosnian conflict and contemporary German and international relations.

This bibliography includes scholarly journals, dissertations, papers, and books published primarily from 1980 through December 1984 that focus on teacher evaluation and merit pay. These materials are presented in separate chapters, according to the type of publication in which they appeared. In addition to materials identified and annotated from a literature search of several education databases, the authors wrote to public school districts with student populations of over 5,000 requesting copies of their teacher evaluation materials. They received 348 sets of evaluation documents and these materials are annotated in the chapter entitled School District Publications. Other materials prepared by school districts are included in the chapter entitled Papers.

Communications with the Future

Communications with the Future

Donald D. Stone

The University of Michigan Press
1997
sidottu
Matthew Arnold has long been recognized as the greatest of Victorian critics. In Communications with the Future, Donald Stone demonstrates Arnold's enormous range, vitality, and continuing relevance. Demonstrating the similarities between Arnold's position and that of subsequent intellectual leaders from Nietzsche to Foucault, Stone vividly establishes that Arnold remains valid now, not only for his emphasis on broad-minded thinking, but also in his enduring impact on the leaders of our own time. Appealing to the belief that we should adopt a dialogical frame of mind, Arnold stands tall today as a harsh critic of narrow-mindedness and overspecialization. Each chapter of Communications with the Future places Arnold in dialogue with an important modern figure or group of figures. Arnold's relationship with America, particularly with America's finest literary critic, Henry James, is surveyed, as is Arnold's relations with French critics from Sainte-Beuve and Ernest Renan to Michel Foucault. Subsequent chapters pair Arnold with Nietzsche, as pungent critics of society and impassioned advocates of "culture," with Hans-Georg Gadamer, as mutual defenders of the humanities, and with the American pragmatists--William James, Richard Rorty, John Dewey--as architects of "creative democracy."Stone argues that Arnold has wrongly been labeled an elitist and the proponent of a rigid canon, when in fact he is dedicated to openness, democracy, and multiculturalism. This book should write finis to that misreading, and will further illuminate our concepts of what it means to live as members of a democratic culture.". . . full of fresh insights, in a readable style, [Communications with the Future] altogether amounts to an eloquent plea for a sound and valuable criticism, against various regressive, dogmatic, narrow schools currently flourishing." --Ruth apRoberts, University of California, RiversideDonald D. Stone is Professor of English, Queens College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. His books include The Romantic Impulse in Modern Fiction and Nineteenth-Century Lives (coedited with John Maynard and Laurence Lockridge).
Principles of Quantum Mechanics

Principles of Quantum Mechanics

Donald D. Fitts

Cambridge University Press
1999
pokkari
This text presents a rigorous mathematical account of the principles of quantum mechanics, in particular as applied to chemistry and chemical physics. Applications are used as illustrations of the basic theory. The first two chapters serve as an introduction to quantum theory, although it is assumed that the reader has been exposed to elementary quantum mechanics as part of an undergraduate physical chemistry or atomic physics course. Following a discussion of wave motion leading to Schrödinger’s wave mechanics, the postulates of quantum mechanics are presented along with essential mathematical concepts and techniques. The postulates are rigorously applied to the harmonic oscillator, angular momentum, the hydrogen atom, the variation method, perturbation theory, and nuclear motion. Modern theoretical concepts such as hermitian operators, Hilbert space, Dirac notation, and ladder operators are introduced and used throughout. This text is appropriate for beginning graduate students in chemistry, chemical physics, molecular physics and materials science.
Westminster’s World

Westminster’s World

Donald D. Searing

Harvard University Press
1993
sidottu
From Policy Advocates to Whips to Ministers, the many roles within the British Parliament are shaped not only by institutional rules but also by the individuals who fill them, yet few observers have fully appreciated this vital aspect of governing in one of the world's oldest representative systems. Applying a new motivational role theory to materials from extensive first-hand interviews conducted during the eventful 1970s, Donald Searing deepens our understanding of how Members of Parliament understand their goals, their careers, and their impact on domestic and global issues. He explores how Westminster's world both controls and is created by individuals, illuminating the interplay of institutional constraints and individual choice in shaping roles within the political arena. No other book tells us so much about political life at Westminster. Searing has interviewed 521 Members of Parliament—including Conservative Ministers Margaret Thatcher, Peter Walker, and James Prior; Labour Ministers Harold Wilson, Barbara Castle, and Denis Healey; rising stars Michael Heseltine, Norman Tebbitt, David Owen, and Roy Hattersley; habitual outsiders, like Michael Foot, who eventually joined the inner circle; and former insiders, like Enoch Powell, who were shut out. Searing also gives voice to the vast number of Westminster's backbenchers, who play a key part in shaping political roles in Parliament but are less likely to be heard in the media: trade unionists, knights of the shires, owners of small businesses, and others. In this segment of his study, women, senior backbenchers, and newcomers are well represented.Searing adroitly blends quantitative with qualitative analysis and integrates social and economic theories about political behavior. He addresses concerns about power, duty, ambition, and representation, and skillfully joins these concerns with his critical discoveries about the desires, beliefs, and behaviors associated with roles in Parliament. Westminster's World offers political scientists, historians, anthropologists, political commentators, and the public rich new material about the House of Commons as well as a convincing model for understanding the structure and dynamics of political roles.
The Legal Foundations of Public Administration

The Legal Foundations of Public Administration

Donald D. Barry; Howard R. Whitcomb

Rowman Littlefield Publishers
2005
sidottu
The third edition of this highly respected textbook introduces students of public administration to the practical issues of administrative law. While useful to law school students, it is most relevant to public management students. The presentation provides a concise foundation to the history and theory of administrative law, rule making, and judicial decisions. The most important issues in administrative law are included—meaningful issues for present and future administrators. A larger number of recent cases and other up-to-date information will be found in the book in order to make the student aware of the kinds of legal problems likely to be encountered in public agencies. One or two cases illustrate each problem at hand, rather than discussing numerous arcane court decisions and technicalities of legal procedure, in order to sketch the broad contours of the present law.
