The Story of Ghost Town Caribou

The Story of Ghost Town Caribou

John W Buchanan; Doris G Buchanan

Nederland Area Historical Society
2024
pokkari
Soon after the discovery of rich lodes of silver at Caribou in 1 869, prospectors and speculators streamed to the nascent mining camp. Investors, miners, and business people made the arduous journey up Boulder Ca on almost to the top of the Continental Divide. They settled in tents in the rugged terrain until they could build the more permanent structures that became a town. Some of them brought their families, and the population swelled in spite of the challenges of living at 10,000 feet. This is the story of Caribou as told by the people who lived there. Caribou produced $20,000,000 in precious metals and became one of the richest mining camps in the Rocky Mountain West. Caribou's history may have followed the typical boom and bust cycle of a mining camp, but the story of its hardy, stubborn people is unique.

A young boy named Joey befriends an elderly woman named Mrs. Benson who is a widow and lives all alone. The boy visits the woman almost daily, doing various chores for her: mowing the lawn; raking leaves; washing windows; etc. The friendlly Mrs. Benson treats Joey with love and kindness and rewards him with lemonade, ice tea, chocolate cake, watermelon, and her homecooked fried chicken. Joey enjoys her delicious treats, but more importantly, he eagerly drinks in Mrs. Benson's kindness and tenderness, and their relationship deepens. As they play cards together and share meals, Mrs. Benson is aware of a profound sadness in Joey. Intuitively she knows that Joey is a victim of child abuse at home. One day, Joey arrives at Mrs. Benson's house to find a police oficer standing on the porch, writing on a clipboard. Joey learns that Mrs. Benson has died, and he's devastated by the loss. Some time goes by and one day Joey finds in his mailbox a letter and a check for $5,000 from the late Mrs.Benson's attorney. Although the check is most welcomed, it's the information found in Mrs. Benson's letter that turns Joey's life around. And Joey uses that information to postively impact the life of another little neighbor boy who is also the victim of child abuse at home. A heartwarming story and one that needs to be told, Dear Joey features forewords by Doris Buffett, Robert Vaughn, Pat Boone, Joe Girard, and Papa Joe Bradford.

Bains reviews symbols employed in the following two centuries, as well as a few which were developed more fully as a result of the rise of learning and science in the twelfth century. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in palaeography.
The Ahern Home of Texarkana

The Ahern Home of Texarkana

Focused on an early twentieth-century home in Texarkana, Arkansas, Doris Douglas Davis’s The Ahern Home of Texarkana offers not only a discussion of the architecture of a Classical Revival dwelling but also provides a closely observed account of the material culture and social structures of a particular time and place in the American South. Built in 1905–1906 by Patrick Ahern, who immigrated to the United States from Dungarvan, Ireland, in 1861, the house at 403 Laurel Street was home to Ahern, his wife Mary, their six children, and a variety of descendants for over a century before its acquisition by the Texarkana Museums System in 2011. Today, the house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as a writing retreat, music center, and venue for historical presentations and educational activities. Based on archival materials, interviews with members of the family and those who knew them, and other research, Davis’s examination of the home and its inhabitants also includes a discussion of the complex relationship between persons of privilege such as the Aherns and the domestic servants, predominantly African American, whose often-arduous work made possible the smooth functioning of the household within its social context in the Jim Crow South. Describing the “fraught” relationships in the South between Black domestic servants and their white employers, Davis presents evidence of “the inevitable despair wrought by inequality and the tremendous capacity of the human heart to love.” This detailed tour of the home, its construction and furnishings, and the socio-historical context of its day-to-day activities provides readers a window of understanding and appreciation that will inform students and scholars of material culture as well as those interested in historical preservation.
