Revision with unchanged content. Edgard Var se began composing D serts in 1949, completing it late in 1954. Scored for 15 instruments, 5 percussionists and 2 tapes of organized sounds, D serts comprises acoustic instrumental music and sections of electronicallyorganized sounds on magnetic tape meant to be inserted at 3 specific locations within the piece. The alternating sections create a continuous, seven-part form. This analysis will concentrate on the geometric constructs at work in D serts. Initially, an analysis of the pitch structure will reveal distinct planes of sound comprised of adjacent pitches. A consideration of these geometric planes based on trichords identified early in the work provide insight into Var se's concept of "music as spatial - as bodies of intelligent sounds moving freely in space," since the elements of tension and release manifest themselves in figures as they collide (tension) and are repelled (release). Consequently, the collision and repulsion of pitch-planes together with the changing of the shapes (construction of new pitch planes) provide clear formal indicators in the instrumental portion of the work and reveal the acoustic portions of the work as a two-part structure.

Bringing a comparative perspective to the study of autobiography, Edgard Sankara considers a cross-section of postcolonial francophone writing from Africa and the Caribbean in order to examine and compare for the first time their transnational reception. Sankara not only compares the ways in which a wide selection of autobiographies were received locally (as well as in France) but also juxtaposes reception by the colonized and the colonizer to show how different meanings were assigned to the works after publication.Sankara's geographical and cultural coverage of Africa and its diaspora is rich, with separate chapters devoted to the autobiographies of Hampate Ba, Valentin Mudimbe, Kesso Barry, Patrick Chamoiseau, Raphael Confiant, and Maryse Conde. The author combines close reading, reception study, and postcolonial theory to present an insightful survey of the literary connections among these autobiographers as well as a useful point of departure for further exploration of the genre itself, of the role of reception studies in postcolonial criticism, and of the stance that postcolonial francophone writers choose to take regarding their communities of origin.Modern Language Initiative

Presenting the basics of elliptic PDEs in connection with regularity theory, the book bridges fundamental breakthroughs – such as the Krylov–Safonov and Evans–Krylov results, Caffarelli's regularity theory, and the counterexamples due to Nadirashvili and Vladut – and modern developments, including improved regularity for flat solutions and the partial regularity result. After presenting this general panorama, accounting for the subtleties surrounding C-viscosity and Lp-viscosity solutions, the book examines important models through approximation methods. The analysis continues with the asymptotic approach, based on the recession operator. After that, approximation techniques produce a regularity theory for the Isaacs equation, in Sobolev and Hölder spaces. Although the Isaacs operator lacks convexity, approximation methods are capable of producing Hölder continuity for the Hessian of the solutions by connecting the problem with a Bellman equation. To complete the book, degenerate models are studied and their optimal regularity is described.
