Untimely Moderns

Untimely Moderns

A novel exploration of the idea of nonlinear time and its place at the heart of modern art and architecture “This book joins the growing body of 21st-century research that successfully unpacks accepted histories to offer fuller, more nuanced interpretations of specific times, places, and concepts. As Pelkonen demonstrates with Untimely Moderns, such reevaluation proves quite timely.”—A. Krista Sykes, Architectural Record Through much of the twentieth century, a diverse group of thinkers engaged in an interdisciplinary conversation about the meaning of time and history for modern art and architecture. The group included architects Louis Kahn, Everett Victor Meeks, James Gamble Rogers, Paul Rudolph, and Eero Saarinen; artists Anni and Josef Albers; philosopher Paul Weiss; and art historians Henri Focillon, George Kubler, Sibyl Moholy-Nagy, and Vincent Scully. These figures were unified by their resistance to the idea that, to be considered modern, art and architecture had to be of its time, as well as by the pivotal role that Yale University held as a backdrop to their thinking. These thinkers sponsored a new kind of approach, one that Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen terms “untimely,” emphasizing a departure from a sequential course of events. Ideas about temporal duration, new tradition, the presence of the past, and the shape of time were among the concepts they explored. With an interdisciplinary focus, Pelkonen reveals previously unexplored connections among key figures of American intellectual and artistic culture at midcentury whose works and words would shape modern architecture.

"This book provides an introduction to human cytogenetics. It is also suitable for use as a text in a general cytogenetics course, since the basic features of chromosome structure and behavior are shared by all eukary otes. Because my own background includes plant and animal cytogenet ics, many of the examples are taken from organisms other than the human. Since the book is written from a cytogeneticist's point of view, human syndromes are described only as illustrations of the effects of abnormal chromosome constitutions on the phenotype. The selection of the phenomena to be discussed and of the photographs to illustrate them is, in many cases, subjective and arbitrary and is naturally influenced by my interests and the work done in our laboratory. " The above paragraph from the Preface of the first edition of this book also fits the present edition. However, so much has happened in five years in cytogenetics that-apart from a couple of pages here and there-the whole book has been rewritten and nine new chapters have been added. The system used in the first edition to cite, whenever possible, the latest and/or the most comprehensive review rather than the original publica tions has been followed here also. Not only would complete literature citations increase the size of the book too much, but many readers have expressed satisfaction with the referencing method used here.

The first book to explore the world's most significant architectural exhibitions of the 20th century How do you exhibit a building, a locality, a city? Asylum Seekers, Sovereignty, and the Senses of the International
The confrontation between asylum seeking and sovereignty has mainly focused on ways in which the movement and possibilities of refugees and migrants are limited. In this volume, instead of departing from the practices of governance and surveillance, Puumala begins with the moving body, its engagements and relations and examines different ways of seeing and sensing the struggle between asylum seekers and sovereign practices. Puumala asserts that our political imagination is being challenged in its ways of ordering, practicing and thinking about the international and those relations we call international. The issues relating to asylum seekers are one example of the deficiencies in the spatiotemporal logic upon which these relations were originally built; words such as ‘nation’, ‘people’, ‘sovereignty’ and ‘community’ are challenged. Conventional methods of governing, regulating and administering increased forms of mobility are in trouble, which gives rise to the invention of new technologies at borders and introduces regulations and spaces of exception. Based on extensive fieldwork that sheds light on a range of Europe-wide practices in the field of asylum and migration policies, this book will be of interest to scholars of IR theory, biopolitics and migration, as well as critical security more broadly.

This book explores how Lean – a global management doctrine – operates and is adopted in the real, corporeal, collective, and affective environments of health and social care services.During Lean implementation processes, knowledges, affects, skills, and materialities come together in manifold, complex ways. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and observation, and with empirical and theoretical rigour, the book provides an answer to the question of what happens to care work when processes become ‘Leaned’. As in many other fields, the predominantly female health and social care sectors suffer from devaluation in terms of wages and working conditions. The book explores how Lean management is ultimately lived in this gendered context of work and labour. Moreover, the book situates Lean and related management doctrines in the current mutation of capitalism – that is, biocapitalism – in which bios, life itself, becomes the core of value production. The book adds to the corpus of work, organisation, and management studies on Lean that have rarely focused on gender, affect, or sociomateriality. It provides scholars in Social Science, Management, and Gender Studies with a fresh outlook and a cross-disciplinary take on Lean management. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons [Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license. ""Studies in Cheremis, V4: Derivation"" is a linguistic book written by Eeva Kangasmaa Minn. The book focuses on the Cheremis language, also known as Mari, which is a Finno-Ugric language spoken by the Mari people in Russia. The book specifically covers the topic of derivation, which is the process of forming new words from existing ones by adding affixes or changing the word's form. The author analyzes the different types of derivation in Cheremis, including the use of suffixes, prefixes, and infixes. The book also examines the semantic and syntactic properties of derived words in Cheremis. This book is a valuable resource for linguists and researchers interested in the Cheremis language and the process of word formation.International Journal Of American Linguistics, V22, No. 2, April, 1956.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. How do young people participate in democratic societies? This book introduces the concept of ‘doing society’ as a new theory of political action. Focused on Finnish youth, it innovatively blends cutting-edge empirical research with agenda-setting theoretical development. Redefining political action, the authors expand beyond traditional public-sphere, scaling from formal to informal and unconventional modes of engaging. The book captures diverse engagement from memes to social movements, from participatory budgeting to street parties and from sleek politicians to detached people in the margins. In doing so, it provides a holistic view of the ways in which young people participate (or do not participate) in society, and their role in cultural change.

Originally published in 1951, this novel tells of a young girl living with her deeply religious grandparents in pre-war Vyborg-before it became part of the Soviet Union. Leena hates school, loves music and rain, and wanders through the town in a state of childish enchantment. “Like a spruce cone, a child falls into a world where logical disorder replaces magical order, and there you are-in trouble, we’ll agree.” The world she inhabits features multiple layers of reality, and this is reflected in the novel’s artful narrative: life and death are reflections of each other, and reality is merely a map of the individual’s inner world. Through the naive perspective of a young girl, the book addresses deep philosophical concerns in simple, lucid prose.

Communication problems in children that are best described as pragmatic in nature have been a focus of attention for some years. However, despite this, speech and language therapists, teachers and researchers still have some difficulty describing, defining and explaining such problems. This book gives an up to date synthesis of work in the field of childhood pragmatic problems and provides both an introduction and more detailed consideration of this complex area. Aspects covered include conversational analysis, speech and communicative acts, reference, narrative, pragmatic comprehension and relevance. Each chapter contains exercises with discussion, notes on normal development and illustrative clinical data from children, as well as recent research in the area.

In the poetry collection That I Would Dream About It, the author travels through her own memories, the passing moments in time and thoughts of awakening beside her lover. This is the most private space she will ever be revealing to the world. This is her personal space she invites readers to examine. Empty spaces and light are her starting points when writing a poem. Her creative writing technique avoids addressing the intimate too rawly: instead of concrete issues about the feminist experience, she is writing in symbols and metaphors from a bodily register and rejoicing the more abstract concepts. She is obsessed with the idea of women writing history, making their own stories heard and thoughts read by those she loves and those she doesn't know yet. She is confessional, but names no-one in her works, pointing out singular events and thoughts to be relevant for the next decades or even centuries to come. In this book, Eeva Maria writes in both the aphoristic and the grandiose verse, leaving her work to be seen as minimalist yet again freely flowing, without limiting or imprisoning her creative talent to a specific form of poetry, varying from a one-verse poem to a liturgy-like ending of her book in question.
