Ada Boucher and Stanley Brent are young things at the time of boaters, parasols, champagne and trippers on the Thames. Ada is an apprentice and dreads heading into the low-paid saleswoman position which beckons. Stanley is an assistant at a land broker's establishment. Their relationship is flushed through with naїve romance - he is bowled over by her raven-haired beauty, she by his humour and goodness. After a long engagement they marry. A trying honeymoon of fearful discovery for Ada about the realities of marriage is the first sign that their greatest challenges may be compromise and really getting to know each other. As life goes on, in small ways their paths diverge. Some of the hopes and joys they hold dear are cast aside, but there are compensations: Stanley becomes a junior partner in his firm; they purchase a new house in the outer suburbs; two daughters are born. But somehow, their fears and worries seem never quite allayed. Can they turn their lives to the sun? Or is there something in them that keeps them facing the dark? For her first published book, Elizabeth Berridge set herself one of the hardest tasks: the story of a whole life condensed into a tiny number of pages. Using telling detail, both domestic and philosophic, and employing it with astoundingly precise skill in unusual ways, she navigates a path which speaks volumes, giving us an unforgettable picture of a struggling couple trying to understand themselves, the world in which they live, and what it all means. The Story of Stanley Brent was first published in 1945.

Paths to Peace begins by developing a theory about the domestic obstacles to making peace and the role played by shifts in states' governing coalitions in overcoming these obstacles. In particular, it explains how the longer the war, the harder it is to end, because domestic obstacles to peace become institutionalized over time. Next, it tests this theory with a mixed methods approach—through historical case studies and quantitative statistical analysis. Finally, it applies the theory to an in-depth analysis of the ending of the Korean War. By analyzing the domestic politics of the war's major combatants—the Soviet Union, the United States, China, and North and South Korea—it explains why the final armistice terms accepted in July 1953 were little different from those proposed at the start of negotiations in July 1951, some 294,000 additional battle-deaths later.

Practice Theory and the Biosocial - Microbes, Matter and Milieu shows what recent developments in social theory bring to questions about how bacteria, viruses, microscopic materials and societies develop in tandem. The examples discussed – from urban infrastructures to the medieval plague and from antibiotic resistance to epigenetics –develop an account of how previous and present arrangements make some futures more likely than others and how unequal patterns of exposure and entanglement arise. This book aims to demonstrate the relevance of social and practice theories by overcoming classic distinctions between the very small and the very large, between agency and structure, and between nature and culture.

A history of the medical and cultural fascination with the skeleton and the dead body through over 400 rare, historic photographs. Author Stanley B. Burns, MD, has studied, collected and written on medical photography for over four decades focusing on unexplored areas. His books have placed him in the forefront of medical photographic history scholarship. This work reveals the nineteenth-century fascination with the dead body and body parts. The classic visual iconography of postmortem, dissection, and bone photography is presented and expanded to include early autopsy images and X-ray studies. No prior visual work has presented the once very popular hobby of collecting skulls and also shown their use in racial and psychological profiling research. This sumptuously illustrated book with previously unpublished photographs is an extraordinary work of medical, historical and cultural research. It is a timeless visual essay that will surely become a standard resource for collectors, curators, artists, and scholars.

Written and painstakingly edited by leading experts, this volume offers a state-of-the-art overview of and solid foundation in up-to-date survey questionnaire issues, concerns, and responses. Like several other books in the Wiley Series in Survey Methodology, this work has been prepared in conjunction with an international conference on the topic (in November 2002) by the Survey Research Methods Section of the American Statistical Association, the American Association for Public Opinion Research, the International Association of Survey Statisticians, the Council of American Survey Research Organizations, and the Council of Marketing and Opinion Research. It also considers these topics in light of emerging techniques and technologies. The book’s authors include more than two-dozen eminent professionals in a variety of fields related to survey methodology and questionnaire development, including names such as Gordon Willis of the National Cancer Insitute; Paul Beatty of the National Center for Health Statistics; Paul Biemerof the Research Triangle Institute; Don Dillman of the University of Washington; and Natacha Borgers, Edith de Leuuw, and Astrid Smits of Statistics Netherlands. Copious tables, figures, and references, as well as an extensive glossary, supplement the high quality discussion throughout the text.

Illuminating one of the most pervasive issues of our time, Popular Culture is the first book to link the importance and implications of popular culture with pedagogical practice. It shows how cultural forms such as Hollywood films, pop music, soap operas, and televangelism are organized by gender, age, class, race, and ethnicity, thus providing the contradictory text that both enables and disables emancipatory interest, so fundamental to the formation of self and society. What emerges is a redefinition of the very notion of popular culture.
