Elizabeth Evelinge, now firmly believed to have been the translator of The admirable life of the holy virgin S. Catharine of Bologna, entered the English Poor Clare monastery in Gravelines in 1620. After ongoing dissension at Gravelines, along with Catharine Bentley (originally believed to be the translator) she founded a new cloister at Aire. Evelinge served as abbess here for 25 years. Her 1621 translation of Catharine of Bologna's life and Spiritual weapons, with their exemplary advice about how to survive the temptations and conflicts of cloistered life, aimed at assisting the troubled English Poor Clares in their time of need. Whether designed to further the Franciscan cause within the cloister or simply to offer solace, the translation of this text occurred because of the dissension in the house at Gravelines. Moreover, it is possible that Catharine of Bologna represented so compelling a model of Poor Clare spirituality that Elizabeth Evelinge, whose piety and talents mirrored those of her subject, deemed herself too humble to ascribe her intellectual achievements to herself, which led to the debate about who translated the text.

Presents new scholarship, images, and primary sources that explore the art and legacy of a critical yet under-recognized figure in Abstract Expressionism and twentieth-century American art."The gentleman Abstract Expressionist," in the words of poet John Ashbery, Bradley Walker Tomlin was known for his elegance in both painting style and personal comportment. The book includes over forty paintings, works on paper, and printed materials, charting Tomlin's development from art nouveau illustrations of the 1920s to large-scale Abstract Expressionist paintings of the 1950s. The exhibition explores his formative years in Syracuse, early patronage by Condé Nast, and the important role played by the Woodstock art colony. Tomlin is best known as a key figure in the New York School and had close friendships with Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, and Robert Motherwell. Unlike most of his peers, Tomlin focused on the impersonal possibilities of art. His carefully orchestrated paintings resonate with our time's renewed interest in abstraction and design.

Surveying four-hundred years of British history, Walker examines how the memory - the icon - of Queen Elizabeth has been used as a marker for Englishness in disputes political and social, in art, literature and popular culture. From her second Westminster tomb to the pseudo-secret histories of the Restoration, from Georgian ballads to Victorian paintings, biographies, children's books, Suffragette banners, novels and films, trends in scholarship and rubber bath ducks, the icon becomes more powerful as the idea of Englishness becomes more arbitrary.

In God and Elizabeth Bishop Cheryl Walker takes the bold step of looking at the work of Elizabeth Bishop as though it might have something fresh to say about religion and poetry. Going wholly against the tide of recent academic practice, especially as applied to Bishop, she delights in presenting herself as an engaged Christian who nevertheless believes that a skeptical modern poet might feed our spiritual hungers. This is a book that reminds us of the rich tradition of religious poetry written in English, at the same time taking delicious detours into realms of humour, social responsibility, and mysticism.

Moshekwa Langa

Moshekwa Langa

"Many things have happened to me, around me, and away from me. I do not remember them sequentially. I remember some of them. I am supposed to have a memory. I recollect certain things. But I have no memory, at least not in the conventional sense." - Moshekwa Langa This publication documents Langa's 1999 installations at The Renaissance Society and Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva. Langa, a native of South Africa currently residing in Amsterdam, works in no single medium; video, photography, drawing, painting and found-object installations are employed without hierarchy, his medium choices being more a matter of whatever is immediately at hand. His exhibitions evidence not only this freewheeling versatility, but also the artist's prolifigacy; he fills every available inch in the gallery spaces. This book's innovative design echoes the artist's collage aesthetic and spirit of generous excess. Like Langa's exhibitions, it is a visual candy store, so full of pleasures that it is hard to decide where to look first. In his catalogue essay, Walker interprets Langa's promiscuous mixing of media and his strategies of appropriation and fragmentation as a response to the conditions of belonging to a diaspora, reflecting the instability that comes from a radical change of place. Janus discusses Langa's efforts to come to terms with the established art world's expectation that an African artist deal with such political issues as post-colonialism, displacement and racism, and his resistance to that through the intensely personal and intimate character of his work. Published in conjunction with Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva.

Direct Action & Sabotage

Direct Action & Sabotage

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn; Walker C. Smith; William E. Trautmann

PM Press

The pamphlets reprinted in this collection were first published in the 1910s amidst great controversy; the significant works included are "Direct Action and Sabotage" by William E. Trautmann, "Sabotage: Its History, Philosophy and Function" by Walker C. Smith, and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn's "Sabotage: The Conscious Withdrawal of the Workers' Industrial Efficiency." Even then, the tactics of direct action and sabotage were often associated with the clandestine activity of a militant minority or the desperate acts of the unorganized. The activist authors of the texts in this collection challenged the prevailing stereotypes. As they point out, the practice of direct action, and of sabotage, have been an integral part of the everyday work life of wage-earners in all times and places; direct action is recognized as a valuable and effective tactic by many movements around the globe, and remains a cutting edge tool for social change.
