Expanded and revised in its sixth edition, The Art of Mesoamerica surveys the artistic achievements of the high prehispanic civilizations of Central America – Olmec, Maya, Teotihuacan, Toltec and Aztec – as well as those of their lesser-known contemporaries. Providing an in-depth examination of central works, this book guides readers through the most iconic palaces, pyramids, sculptures and paintings. From the Olmec Colossal Head 5 recovered from San Lorenzo to the Aztec Calendar Stone found in Mexico City’s Zócalo in 1790, this book reveals the complexity and innovation behind the art and architecture produced in prehispanic civilizations. This new edition incorporates new lavish colour images and extensive updates based on the latest research and dozens of recent discoveries, particularly in Maya art, where excavations at Teotihuacan, the largest city of Mesoamerica, and Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztecs, have yielded new sculptures.

One Couple's Journey of Spiritual Self-DiscoveryA True Story of Our Deepest Human PotentialAmong the many books dealing with spiritual growth, Silence and the Soul distinguishes itself as one of the best about the process of awakening inner wisdom. This unexpected page-turner reads like an adventure story. Part memoir and part instruction manual, this self-revealing and emotionally honest narrative is the true story of Ellen Miller and Gary Sherman, an otherwise ordinary, middle-aged, California couple. On page one, Miller, age 45, is hospitalized with a rare, incurable disease. Driven by curiosity and the simple belief that within each of us lies a source of wisdom, love and creative energy, the authors embark on a captivating and extraordinary excursion into expanded consciousness that ultimately takes them on a spiritual journey deep within themselves. Theirs is an account of a mutual awakening: a cooperative relationship between two people and an inner teacher. This source engages them in "The Conscious Evolution of Consciousness," a process of training and teaching that transforms their lives and opens extraordinary capacities of expanded perception. This is a rare telling, from the inside out. Like a good documentary film, the book takes us on a voyage through the internal landscape of their step-by-step process.Reminiscent of the works of Jane Roberts and Carlos Castaneda, Silence and the Soul is a decidedly unselfconscious attempt to reveal Miller and Sherman's internal experience. Interwoven throughout the chapters are insights and practices for unleashing inner creativity. There are dozens of examples and techniques for evolving and utilizing this creative energy in all aspects of daily life. Miller and Sherman have written a book that is accessible to spiritually sophisticated readers as well as to those who are unfamiliar with metaphysical literature.

The pain is deep, but the wound is not one those who are feeling it are free to openly discuss without shame - the desire to be a grandparent. It runs deep in some. In 2014, when author Dr. Miller first experienced this feeling of loss and then began her research on the topic, she discovered there was no one word to describe this subset of the population... and subsequently coined the term "non-grandparent" in articles she wrote for grief periodicals. Secret Sorrow: Grieving and Healing as a Non-Grandparent in a Grandparenting World honors those among us who long to be a grandparent, but who have not reached this life milestone. Expanding beyond her lived experience, the author includes stories from other non-grandparents to motivate healing discussions on the topic. This book offers non-grandparents concrete ways to cope with their sorrow, including communication and self-care strategies.READER REVIEWS"Secret Sorrow is a compassionate and necessary book for those who find themselves navigating life as non-grandparents. Dr. Miller opens the door to a deeply personal and often silent grief-one that is rarely acknowledged but profoundly felt. ... With grace and wisdom, Dr. Miller invites non-grandparents to embrace a space of radical welcome and belonging, where their experiences, emotions, and journeys are not only validated but honored." Hasshan Batts, DHSc, MSW, Philanthropist, Author, and National Thought Leader on Healing, Community, and Radical Welcome "Secret Sorrow is a long overdue book for those experiencing the profound loss of being a 'non-grandparent' in a grandparenting world. Non-grandparents' pervasive, persistent grief is rarely understood by family, friends or professionals. ... As a public health nurse, educator, administrator, I am also an advocate for Secret Sorrow to be an integral component of nursing education, and maternal-child health services. No longer should non-grandparents keep secret their sorrow." Katherine (Kay) Kinsey, PhD, RN, FAAN, FCPP"This book gives voice to a group that is often overlooked, while experiencing incredible sadness, grief and perhaps isolation as 'non-grandparents.' It includes the personal story of the author and others who are trying to come to terms with the loss and/or absence of a grandparenting role that they always assumed would be part of their life. ... The sheer existence of this book offers a community to non-grandparents and insight and expertise to those that may care for them either as health professionals, friends or family." The wives of Woodrow Wilson were strikingly different from each other. Ellen Axson Wilson, quiet and intellectual, died after just a year and a half in the White House and is thought to have had little impact on history. Edith Bolling Wilson was flamboyant and confident but left a legacy of controversy. Yet, as Kristie Miller shows, each played a significant role in the White House. Miller presents a rich and complex portrait of Wilson's wives, one that compels us to reconsider our understanding of both women. Ellen comes into clear focus as an artist and intellectual who dedicated her talents to an ambitious man whose success enabled her to have a significant influence on the institution of the first lady. Miller's assessment of Edith Wilson goes beyond previous flattering accounts and critical assessments. She examines a woman who overstepped her role by hiding her husband's serious illness to allow him to remain in office. But, Miller concludes, Edith was acting as she knew her husband would have wished. Miller explains clearly how these women influenced Woodrow Wilson's life and career. But she keeps her focus on the women themselves, placing their concerns and emotions in the foreground. She presents a balanced appraisal of each woman's strengths and weaknesses. She argues for Ellen's influence not only on her husband but on subsequent first ladies. She strives for an understanding of the controversial Edith, who saw herself as Wilson's principal advisor and, some would argue, acted as shadow president after his stroke. Miller also helps us better appreciate the role of Mary Allen Hulbert Peck, whose role as Wilson's ""playmate"" complemented that of Ellen-but was intolerable to Edith. Especially because Woodrow Wilson continues to be one of the most-studied American presidents, the task of recognizing and understanding the influence of his wives is an important one. Drawing extensively on the Woodrow Wilson papers and newly available material, Miller's book answers that call with a sensitive and compelling narrative of how private and public emotions interacted at a pivotal moment in the history of first ladies.
