A Mind for Tomorrow

A Mind for Tomorrow

Erika Erdmann; David Stover

Stover and Erdmann deal with the crises confronting today's world and argue that solutions will come not from new technology nor in retreating to an idealized agrarian past, but by overhauling the beliefs that structure society. They link the dilemmas facing civilization to a fundamental rift running through society—one between religion and the humanities, rooted in subjective experience, and science, which emphasizes objective knowledge. They suggest a promising way of closing this rift found in the work of Nobel Laureate and neuroscientist Roger W. Sperry. They examine Sperry's lifework, including his famous split- brain research and show how it led him to propose a theory of consciousness that challenged science's dismissal of subjective experience as irrelevant. By seeing consciousness as an emergent, causal property of brain function, Sperry reinstated subjective experience into the scientific worldview, laid the foundation for the cognitive revolution that has since swept through psychology, and created a means by which science can help create ethical systems better able to deal with today's challenges. Stover and Erdmann conclude by looking at ways in which others have built upon Sperry's ideas, and they hold out the hope that, with the creation of belief systems more compatible with science, a way out of humanity's current troubles may indeed be found. The result is an excursion through a world of exciting ideas, and a book sure to absorb anyone interested in the fate of our species—and how that fate might be influenced for the better. Students, researchers, scholars, and concerned citizens particularly interested in cognitive psychology, science and society, and futures studies will find the book intriguing.

The Major Plays of Nikolai Erdman

First Published in 1995. Russian Theatre Archive- Volume 1. Newly translated by John Freedman, Erdmans's first biographer, Nikola Erdman's two classic tragicomedies, 'The Warrant' and 'The Suicide', come to life as brilliant, eccentric and eminently performable works for the theatre as well as fascinating documents of the theatrical boom and social upheaval that took place in Russia in the 1920s. Both plays were written expressly for the great Vsevolod Meyerhold, who declared that Erdman was the heir to the rich Russian comic dramatic tradition established by Nikolai Gogol and Alexander Sukhovo-Kobylin. Meyerhold's staging of The Warrant in 1925 was one of the most innovative and successful. His attempt to stage The Suicide in 1932 eas banned by Stalin. After being exiled to Siberia in 1933, Erdman never again wrote a full-length play. But, in The Warrant and The Suicide, Erdman's themes- the failure of language as a reliable tool of communication, the degeneration of the human element brought on by the onslaught of mass culture, and the extraordinary, if not always heroic, resilience of the individual human being- remain as contemporary and universal as ever.

The Swatantra Party and Indian Conservatism

The Swatantra Party and Indian Conservatism

Erdman H. L.

Cambridge University Press

pokkari
The Swatantra Party, founded in 1959 to provide a right-wing opposition to the ruling Congress Party, has since become the leading opposition in the Indian national parliament. Dr Erdman examines the background, emergence and growth of Swatantra within the framework of conservative politics in India. He first considers the concept of conservatism, and surveys the doctrines, social bases and political organization of the right-wing parties prior to 1959. He then describes how the Swatantra coalition, predominantly an aggregate of provincial parties, was founded by some of India's most distinguished public figures. The later chapters examine in detail the internal structure, ideology, leadership and electoral performance of the party, and its relationship with the other major opposition parties in India. The results of the 1967 elections are discussed in an appendix.
Neighborliness

Neighborliness

The communities in the Southern Philippines are wounded and scarred by the never-ending atrocities between the Philippine Government and Muslim rebel groups who are fighting for their land, their identity and their autonomy. The neighborhood communities between Muslims and Christians are the most affected in the atrocities. It affects the way they live, move and act as neighbors to one another. The neighborliness in the region changes as the landscape of the political and social arena changes. Thus, it is but proper that the healing and reconciliation begins in the same scarred and wounded neighborhoods. This study identifies three narratives of neighborliness in the region; (1) the intentional communities established during the American regime, (2) the neighborliness introduced by the Bishops and the Ulama in response to the document Nostra Aetate, and (3) the proposed neighborliness anchored in the document A Common Word Between Us and You. The Basic Ecclesial Communities and the Ummah are the communities at the frontier of this new neighborliness. These are the communities who are challenged to live the spirituality of reconciliation as they live this new neighborliness.
