For Reed and Kathy Sue Burroughs, their romantic escapades continue in "A Week Together" (Bjorn Hasseler) as they savor time together between wars. But not all adventures are loving ones, as seen in "Rites of Passage" (Edith Wild) where Amalia von Herbert and Maggie Vogel face the aftermath of a cliffhanger from Issue 4. In "Emancipation and Education," Terry Howard tells the unexpected and heart-wrenching tale of a boy fighting to stay in school against his father's wishes. Finally, in Aaron Jamieson Greso's first 1632 story, "The Diablo Is In The Details," a simple task of buying compasses and selling a donkey turns into a bigger challenge than expected for a Portuguese merchant and a knight. In this new edition of a modern classic, Thomas Howard contrasts the Christian and secular worldviews, refreshing our minds with the illuminated view of Christianity as it imbued the world in times past--showing that we cannot live meaningful lives without this Christian understanding of things. This is an inspiring apology for Christianity, and a stirring critique of secularism. Howard explains in clear and beautiful language why secular humanism is robbing us of the beauty, depth and profound truths of Christianity. With laser precision through lyrical ponderings he takes us through the dismal reductionist view of the world to the shimmering significance of this world as sign and sacrament. A book that is more timely now than when it was first written, and a prophetic examination of modern society's conscience.

Published more than twenty years ago, Stephen Eric Bronner's bold defense of socialism remains a seminal text for our time. Treating socialism as an ethic, reinterpreting its core categories, and critically confronting its early foundations, Bronner's work offers a reinvigorated "class ideal" and a new perspective for progressive politics in the twentieth century. Socialism Unbound is an extraordinary work of political history that revisits the pivotal figures of the labor movement: Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Karl Kautsky, Vladimir Lenin, and Rosa Luxemburg. Examining their contributions as well as their flaws, Bronner shows how critical innovation gave way to dogma. New practical problems have arisen, and this volume engages with the relationship between class and social movements, institutional accountability and democratic participation, economic justice and market imperatives, and internationalism and identity. With a foreword by Dick Howard and a new introduction by the author, Bronner's classic study remains indispensable for scholars and activists alike.

Testlet Response Theory and Its Applications
Howard Wainer; Eric T. Bradlow; Xiaohui Wang

The measurement models employed to score tests have been evolving over the past century from those that focus on the entire test (true score theory) to models that focus on individual test items (item response theory) to models that use small groups of items (testlets) as the fungible unit from which tests are constructed and scored (testlet response theory, or TRT). In this book, the inventors of TRT trace the history of this evolution and explain the character of modern TRT. Written for researchers and professionals in statistics, psychometrics, and educational psychology, the first part offers an accessible introduction to TRT and its applications. The second part presents a comprehensive, self-contained discussion of the model couched within a fully Bayesian framework. Its parameters are estimated using Markov chain Monte Carlo procedures, and the resulting posterior distributions of the parameter estimates yield insights into score stability that were previously unsuspected.

The authors of the first edition were chosen for their internationally recognized expertise in their respective fields: the history and literature of Israel; postbiblical Judaism; biblical archaeology; and the origins and early literature of Christianity. In this second edition, all chapters have been updated and thoroughly revised, under the direction of a new volume editor, Bruce D. Chilton. More than 22 new maps, 90 new photographs and a full-color section help illustrate the book.
