The Book of Esther records details about the Lord God continuing to help His people via Esther and Mordechai in accordance with the good-message regarding the Christ. It includes information about Esther becoming the queen, rejection of idolatry, the plot against the Judeans, supplication to the Lord God, how Esther followed God's instructions, how God answered their prayers resulting in victory, and how the two-day feast of remembrance (Purim) was instituted. The chronological timeframe of the Book of Esther is prior to the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah. It was before the emancipation from Babylon of the Judeans. This book includes verses translated from the Greek old covenant writing, sometimes referred to as the Septuagint. Additionally, some comparisons to the Hebrew text are provided.
Narrative and Other Readings in the Book of Esther
This collection of essays considers the Book of Esther from a literary and sociological perspective. In part one, Else Holt outlines the main questions of historical-critical research in the Book of Esther. She also discusses the theological meaning of a biblical book without God, and examines how the book was transmitted through the last centuries BCE. She also explores how the Hebrew and Greek variants of the Book of Esther picture its main character, Esther, the Jewish queen of Persia. In part two, Holt offers deconstructive reading of themes hidden under the surface-levels of the book. Chapters include discussions of Esther’s initiation into her role as Persian queen; the inter-textual conversation with two much later texts, The Arabian Nights and The Story of O; and the relationship between Mordecai, the Jew, and his opponent Haman, the Agagite, as a matter of mimetic doublings. The last part of the book introduces the sociological concept of ethnicity-construction as the backdrop for perceiving the instigation of the Jewish festival Purim and the violence connected to it, and looks at the Book of Esther as an example of trauma literature. The concluding chapter analyses the moral quality of the book of Esther, asking the question: Is it a bedtime story?

Combined Parent-Child Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Combined Parent-Child Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Violence is an epidemic that negatively impacts children across their lifespan. Reports indicate 2.1 million youth have experienced physical abuse during their lifetimes, disrupting the healthy development of children from the toddler years through adolescence, and most cases involve parents. Some parents lack the skills to effectively parent and use physical discipline as a strategy to control their children's problem behaviors. They may use increasing force if children continue to be noncompliant, which places many children at-risk for harm. Combined Parent-Child Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CPC-CBT), created by Melissa K. Runyon and Esther Deblinger and outlined in this guide, provides an evidence-based intervention aimed at empowering families to develop optimistic outlooks on parenting and peaceful home environments, and to decrease stress experienced both by parents and children. CPC-CBT incorporates elements from empirically supported CBT models for families who have experienced physical abuse, sexual abuse, and domestic violence; additionally, CPC-CBT draws on concepts from developmental theory, learning theory, family systems theory, and motivational interviewing. The target population includes children (ages 3-17 years) and their parents/caregivers who have already engaged in or are at-risk for physically abusive behavior towards their children. This manual is for clinicians, clinical supervisors, administrators, and others who are considering the implementation of CPC-CBT in their agencies with families at-risk for child physical abuse.
Child Sexual Abuse

Children who have been sexually abused not only often experience PTSD symptoms as a direct result of the trauma, but also develop unhealthy emotional responses and may engage in age-inappropriate sexual behaviors. In addition, parents also suffer from the trauma and thus are often in need of emotional support and guidance in responding to their children's needs. Based on over 25 years of research supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect (NCCAN), and other funding sources, Child Sexual Abuse describes a premier empirically supported treatment approach for children, adolescents, and non-offending parents/caregivers impacted by child sexual abuse. Developed to provide support and to alleviate symptoms and problem behaviors in children and adolescents, trauma-focused CBT for child sexual abuse incorporates treatment components that provide children and their caregivers with education and coping skills training, while simultaneously addressing the trauma. The book describes the nuts and bolts of treatment including trauma narration and processing that helps to alleviate children's distress and feelings of shame associated with the abuse. Parents are also taught effective behavior management skills, and treatment often culminates with a focus on parent-child communication and enhancing safety and future development. This highly effective treatment model can be adapted to be delivered in school-based, residential, home and/or group settings.

For many women, the advice “Use a condom!” is not enough to help protect them from HIV infection. As Women and AIDS reveals, “negotiating” safer sex practices is a very complex issue for women who are involved in relationships where they do not enjoy physical, social, or economic equality. The book’s authors maintain that the key to curbing the spread of HIV and to caring for those already infected--is communication. Women and AIDS is the first volume to address HIV/AIDS and women from a communication perspective. This helpful guidebook addresses how women might achieve safer sexual and drug injection practices with partners, but it also explores women’s negotiation of the health care system as patients, medical research subjects, and caregivers. It challenges traditional assumptions about the relationship between care providers and patients and the meaning of patient compliance and raises important questions about gender, race, and class that are exacerbated by the epidemic. Designed to ground interventions in the realities of women’s lives, Women and AIDS discusses what women can do to get around communication and health care obstacles. To this end, you will learn about:using the media for HIV-related social action and to promote women’s views of HIV and sexuality prison health care for HIV-positive women cultural constructions of sex and drug sharing in a variety of communities long-term changes that will empower women delivering an HIV-positive diagnosis to patients gender roles and caregiving the language we use to talk about “Third World” women and “Asian AIDS” women AIDS filmmakers/videographersFor the benefit of AIDS activists, health care providers, and counselors, Women and AIDS discusses women and their communication and awareness from virtually every angle. This book analyzes situations where communication breaks down--from the woman who can’t openly discuss safe sex with her partner, to the drunk college student who “hooks up,” to the doctor who gives an HIV-positive diagnosis without compassion--and offers communication solutions. This will help women avoid such risks, establish communication and safety in their lives, and construct meaningful roles in relationship to HIV/AIDS.

Merging scholarly research and biographical narrative, She Calls Herself Betsey Stockton reveals the true life of a freed and highly educated slave in the Antebellum North. Betsey Stockton's odyssey began in 1798 in Princeton, New Jersey, as ""Bet,"" the child of a slave mother, who captured the heart of her owner and surrogate father Ashbel Green, President of Princeton University. Advanced lessons at Princeton Theological Seminary matched her with lifelong friends Rev. Charles S. Stewart and his pregnant bride Harriet, as the three endured an 158-day voyage as Presbyterian missionaries to the Sandwich Islands in1823. Armchair sailors will savor Stockton's own pre-Moby Dick whaleship journal of her time at sea, a shipboard birth, and life at Lahaina, Maui, where Stockton is celebrated as founding the first school for non-royal Hawaiians. Back on US soil, Stockton became surrogate mother to the Stewarts' three children, sailed with missionaries on the Barge Canal to the Ojibwa Mission School, and later returned to her hometown, establishing a church and four schools which are the centers of a still-vibrant African American Historic District of Witherspoon-Jackson.
