The purpose of introducing community advocacy and equity strategies to students is to motivate them to create better opportunities for the people within their community by improving the types of services available in their immediate environment. It might be infestation by an unfamiliar pest, like the rabbit in Australia; or soil erosion, from ill-controlled clearing and cropping; or pollution from fertilizers or industrial wastes; or urban proliferation; or toxic accumulation of pesticides. From the crescendo of such warnings, industrial man began to learn again what agricultural man learned long ago-that he is only one among many species, whose continued existence depends not only or primarily on competitive struggle but on most complex systems of mutual support, not less effective for being unconscious and unplanned. These are the kind of systems that ecologists study; so we look to ecology for light upon them.

This book assesses the politics and programs of the U.S. Export-Import Bank and their relevance to U.S. trade policy. Focusing on the direct loan program for large credits with maturities of more than five years, the authors evaluate the broad criteria employed by the Bank in its decision-making process and the resulting allocation of Bank resources. They also examine the distribution of Bank loans and subsidies across industries and relate this to key industry characteristics such as comparative advantage and export dependence. The problems faced by the Eximbank in recent years—high borrowing costs, intensified export credit competition, limited resources, increased risks, conflicting mandates to be competitive yet self-sustaining -—have given tremendous importance to the careful articulation of policy and administration of programs. The authors find Bank policies to be broadly supportive of the U.S. trade policy goals, but also identify several areas of inconsistency and lack of definition and offer alternative means of specifying criteria to overcome these problems.

No four-letter F-words were used in the making of this book. However, it was a four-letter F-word that inspired the writing of this book. The first small group I ever led was for a group of teenage guys who were pretty new to church. After months of doing small group together I really thought I was getting through to them. In fact, one of them even volunteered to pray. I was feeling pretty good about myself until he closed out his prayer "F*%$#*# Amen ".It's moments like that when you begin to question what you're doing leading a small group. This is a book for any small group leader that's ever thought about quitting. You're not alone, it's normal to question why you keep doing it. It's easy to sign up to lead a small group, it's hard to follow through and keep leading when things don't go as you planned (which they never do). Before you quit leading your group, read this book. I know from experience there are days it feels like a grind. There are moments you wonder if this is even making a difference. If anyone would even miss meeting together if you ended this group tomorrow. I promise you, it's worth it. I've seen the life change time and time again and I've seen the fruit that comes when leaders stay in it for the long run.
