'The man lying beneath your feet did not "succumb to the blackness", or any other such drivel. He was murdered, plain and simple.' With those words echoing in his ears, troubled cub reporter Felix Butler embarks on a mission to finish off a dead journalist's final story-a story the editor was too scared to touch. Taken from his cosy life writing "feel-good hogwash" for the South Devon Post, he is thrust into a murky world of lies and deceit and embarks on a trail that stretches from the cliffs of South Devon via the sands of Arabia to the media circus of London. Joined by a mysterious girl from Lebanon and haunted by demons from his past, Butler must revisit his painful childhood if he is to get to the truth. Meanwhile, Machiavellian forces are at work, and a lone henchman stalks his prey. Some secrets are most definitely worth killing for... Double Elephant is a slow-burning mystery that will have you gripped.
The most enterprising and emotional true story ever written about the ballet industry. A young girl whose dream to be a ballet dancer is threatened merely by the colour of her skin in 1960's racist Britain. Yet by dedication and perseverance, she overcomes all manner of obstacles to eventually realise her ambitions, performing for the President and First Lady of the USA, Michael Jackson and with Luciano Pavarotti. Brickbats and Tutus is both inspirational and motivating; a true life story of adventure and adversity in which one individual accepts and overcomes the most daunting of challenges faced by any young person. 'The initial enthusiasm Julie had for the dancing lessons began to dwindle under the constant pressure of being isolated by the other children and some of the teachers. Although she was never told the reasons why she was made to feel so alone, and ignored when questioning anything she felt was important, the colour of her skin had to be a part of the equation. A sad and lonely period of her life followed and she began to feel trapped inside herself. Various emotions became bottled up inside the girl, a mixture of frustration, confusion, inhibition and many others were responsible for a sense of unhappiness and her failure to release those feelings, added to their increasing influence.'The further she travelled the globe, the more adventures she had - from living through the New York blackout of 1977 to experiencing Ku Klux Klan protests in Mississippi. But what was her proudest moment'Standing outside the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, where my mother had scrimped and saved to take me to a performance as a child.' The Voice News.

The 1952 Nobel physics laureate Felix Bloch (1905-83) was one of the titans of twentieth-century physics. He laid the fundamentals for the theory of solids and has been called the “father of solid-state physics.” His numerous, valuable contributions include the theory of magnetism, measurement of the magnetic moment of the neutron, nuclear magnetic resonance, and the infrared problem in quantum electrodynamics.Statistical mechanics is a crucial subject which explores the understanding of the physical behaviour of many-body systems that create the world around us. Bloch's first-year graduate course at Stanford University was the highlight for several generations of students. Upon his retirement, he worked on a book based on the course. Unfortunately, at the time of his death, the writing was incomplete. This book has been prepared by Professor John Dirk Walecka from Bloch's unfinished masterpiece. It also includes three sets of Bloch's handwritten lecture notes (dating from 1949, 1969 and 1976), and details of lecture notes taken in 1976 by Brian Serot, who gave an invaluable opinion of the course from a student's perspective. All of Bloch's problem sets, some dating back to 1933, have been included. The book is accessible to anyone in the physical sciences at the advanced undergraduate level or the first-year graduate level.
