Spain of Fernando de Rojas

Spain of Fernando de Rojas

As a major piece of historical detective work. Stephen Gilman's "La Celestina" and the Spain of Fernando de Rojas adds a new dimension to critical studies of the fifteenth-century masterpiece. Using the text of La Celestina as well as public and private archives in Spain, Mr. Oilman builds up a vivid sense of the man behind the dialogue and establishes Fernando de Rojas indisputably as its author--a figure whom critics, while ranking his novel second only to Don Quixote, have treated as semi-anonymous or non-existent. We cannot really know what the Celestina is, says Mr. Oilman, without speculating as rigorously and as learnedly as possible both on how it came to be and on how it could come to be. Thus he reconstructs the world of Rojas, country lawyer and converso, the social, religious, and intellectual milieu of Salamanca, of Spain during the Inquisition, of the converted Jew. He makes it possible for us to see the author--the law student writing feverishly during a fortnight's vacation from classes--in the context of his own times and thus to understand Rojas' achievement: his unconventionality; his sardonic judgment of the Spain in which he lived; the explosive originality, in fact, of La Celestina. Originally published in 1972. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Quin Fue Fernando de Magallanes? / Who Was Ferdinand Magellan? (Spanish Edition)
When Portuguese sailor Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain in 1519, he believed he could get to the Spice Islands by sailing west through or around the New World. He was right, but what he didn't know was that the treacherous voyage would take him three years and cost him his life. Black-and-white line drawings illustrate Magellan's life and voyage, with sidebars and a time line that enhance readers' understanding of the period.
Testament of Fernando de Rojas. Pursuit of the missing writer
After my discovery of the author of La Celestina, the writer Gonzalo Fern ndez de Oviedo, the time had come to dedicate all my activity to finding a missing writer by the name of Rojas. I already had some ideas for doing this work, because in the last few years I acquired traces of his activity. I thought that it might be a good idea to express in this work how I fixed it to obtain traces of Fernando de Rojas and find his unknown books. A writer is a writer, so I thought that it would be a matter of time, because I was sure that Rojas must have written various books. On the other hand I was sure that the Lucena clan worked closely together due to suspected consanguinity. The reader or researcher of this book will observe that this book could be full of mistakes, but also full of right guesses. I will not lose any seat at a university, so my writing is full of freedom. I have observed that many researchers make very good studies full of bibliography and general ideas. However, it is difficult to find out if there is really something new in those studies, because they do not like to cross the line. This is something that I do and I prefer to go into unknown territory, just as I did during my short draughts career and business life.

The Legacy of Rulership in Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxochitl's Historia de la nación chichimeca
In this book Leisa A. Kauffmann takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the writings of one of Mexico's early chroniclers, Fernando de Alva Ixtilxochitl, a bilingual seventeenth-century historian from Central Mexico. His writing, especially his portrayal of the great pre-Hispanic poet-king Nezahualcoyotl, influenced other canonical histories of Mexico and is still influential today. Many scholars who discuss Alva Ixtlilxochitl's writing focus on his personal and literary investment in the European classical tradition, but Kauffmann argues that his work needs to be read through the lens of Nahua cultural concepts and literary-historical precepts. She suggests that he is best understood in light of his ancestral ties to Tetzcoco's rulers and as a historian who worked within both Native and European traditions. By paying attention to his representation of rulership, Kauffmann demonstrates how the literary and symbolic worlds of the Nahua exist in allegorical but still discernible subtexts within the larger Spanish context of his writing.
