Though he lived throughout much of the South-and even worked his way into parts of the North for a time-Jim Crow was conceived and buried in Maryland. From Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney's infamous decision in the Dred Scott case to Thurgood Marshall's eloquent and effective work on Brown v. Board of Education, the battle for black equality is very much the story of Free State women and men. Here, Baltimore Sun columnist C. Fraser Smith recounts that tale through the stories, words, and deeds of famous, infamous, and little-known Marylanders. He traces the roots of Jim Crow laws from Dred Scott to Plessy v. Ferguson and describes the parallel and opposite early efforts of those who struggled to establish freedom and basic rights for African Americans. Following the historical trail of evidence, Smith relates latter-day examples of Maryland residents who trod those same steps, from the thrice-failed attempt to deny black people the vote in the early twentieth century to nascent demonstrations for open access to lunch counters, movie theaters, stores, golf courses, and other public and private institutions-struggles that occurred decades before the now-celebrated historical figures strode onto the national civil rights scene. Smith's lively account includes the grand themes and the state's major players in the movement-Frederick Douglass, Harriett Tubman, Thurgood Marshall, and Lillie May Jackson, among others-and also tells the story of the struggle via several of Maryland's important but relatively unknown men and women-such as Gloria Richardson, John Prentiss Poe, William L. "Little Willie" Adams, and Walter Sondheim-who prepared Jim Crow's grave and waited for the nation to deliver the body.

This book asks the question, how would economics look today and into the future if one started with a blank sheet of paper? Written mainly for a technical audience, yet accessible to the lay reader, Economics of a Crowded Planet addresses the ontology, epistemology and methodology of a future economics as if from outside the economy looking in. It presents a conceptual framework for a future economics drawing from systems science and hierarchy theory, integrating central concepts from present-day economics, so as to orient the field in a direction that can serve society’s future needs in practical ways. The exposition reveals a paradigm called ‘market planetarianism’: the idea that the power of markets may be used to steer the economy toward a desired long-term goal. Both a prescriptive doctrine and an economic methodology, it treats the economy and nature as instances of complex, evolutionary systems, demanding analytical tools quiteunlike those of the 20th-century mainstream.

This book asks, how would a stable, prosperous economy of the future look if one started with a blank sheet of paper? Given that the world’s economy is locked into a coevolution with nature, the urgency of this question is brought into stark relief by the 2020 coronavirus pandemic and ongoing climate change. While physical technologies to build such an economy mostly exist, the social technologies, in the form of institutions, governance and policies, do not. The development of these social technologies will necessitate a reconsideration of economic norms: in particular, what is the economy for, and what are we, as actors within it, striving for? This book integrates normative, institutional, political and economic requirements into a systematic framework to drive our present growth economy toward a future planetarian one. It outlines a suite of interrelated policies to increase the economy’s material efficiency, establish a basic living standard, and reform the money system, while along the way eliminating economic debt and balancing government budgets. The framework and policies together form a paradigm of market planetarianism: the idea that the power of markets may be used to steer the economy toward a desired long-term goal. The methodological aspects of this paradigm are covered in the companion volume, Economics of a Crowded Planet.

Keep Your Brain Young: A Health and Diet Program for Your Brain, including 150 Recipes
The population explosion of the 'oldest old' will triple soon. This timely and topical book provides comprehensive, easy-to-understand information on the common diseases of brain ageing, about the most significant and often silent causes, and finally provides a simple programme of action that anyone can follow. Part 1 outlines the most common diseases of neurological ageing, such as Alzheimer's and dementia associated with ageing arteries. Part 2 looks at the root causes of many of these conditions, asking the question 'what events and lifestyle choices set the stage for a rapid decline in cognitive ability in the older years'? Part 3 outlines a simple yet comprehensive 8-step programme that guides the reader in the quest for healthy brain functioning. These steps include: Fuel the nervous system; Shield the brain tissues and cells from the damage that leads to ageing; Support the body's detoxification mechanisms; Keep the arteries, capillaries and blood supply to the brain as young as possible; Consume special foods that enhance brain function; Address the determinants of health, especially the healing power of sleep; Saturate the brain with the optimal balance of fats; Tap into the regenerative potential of the brain. Part 4 delves deeply into nutritional measures since the brain is so dependent on proper nutrition. A complete menu plan calculated to meet daily needs and to empower a nutritional and biochemical optimization plan is provided. The diet will also supply the many nutrients that are needed for optimal brain function. The authors then provide the actual recipes for this diet plan.
