It is now evident - it should be at least to any intelligent observer - that the business of EPA is the total destruction of heavy industry in this nation. For this we will all suffer, individually and collectively. The most devious destruction of all is the destruction of science. EPA has so manipulated basic science that real science may never completely recover. These are the most heinous of crimes. May it weigh heavy on both body and soul of the instigators, promoters and perpetrators for their many falsehoods and frauds. (Robert Hopper, cover)
THE TOMB OF BEOWULF Fred C. Robinson is known throughout the world for some of the most original and stimulating work on Old English literature and language published in recent times. This book collects twenty three of his essays, including three substantial new articles on the literary interpretation of Beowulf, the background and value of Ezra Pound’s translation of The Seafarer, and an account of the use of Old English in twentieth-century literary compositions. The essays vary widely in terms of subject and approach. They include literary interpretation and criticism of the best-known Old English poems (The Battle of Maldon and Exodus for example), an account of the historical, religious, and cultural background to the writing of Beowulf, articles on women in Old English literature and on the significance of names and naming. The book as a whole is informed by the author’s preoccupation with meaning, context, and language, and their subtle interactions. Its contents are equally characterized by readability and scholarship, and by learning and wit.
This annotated bibliography introduces the reader to the best recent works of scholarship on each important work of Old English literature. It also lists relevant standard editions, literary histories, linguistic tolls, and important works on archaeology, history, and paleography.
Author, Fred C. Pompel, treats age as a component of social inequality which gives rise to the three major themes of the text: diversity in the experience of individuals, differences in public policy, and variations across nations. Comparison of the United States with other nations is a central component of the book, providing a greater understanding of the larger forces that shape old age.
In the early 1990s, Albania, arguably Europe's most closed and repressive state, began a startling transition out of forty years of self-imposed Communist isolation. Albanians who were not allowed to practice religion, travel abroad, wear jeans, or read "decadent" Western literature began to devour the outside world. They opened cafés, companies, and newspapers. Previously banned rock music blared in the streets. Modern Albania offers a vivid history of the Albanian Communist regime's fall and the trials and tribulations that led the country to become the state it is today. The book provides an in-depth look at the Communists' last Politburo meetings and the first student revolts, the fall of the Stalinist regime, the outflows of refugees, the crash of the massive pyramid-loan schemes, the war in neighboring Kosovo, and Albania's relationship with the United States. Fred Abrahams weaves together personal experience from more than twenty years of work in Albania, interviews with key Albanians and foreigners who played a role in the country's politics since 1990—including former Politburo members, opposition leaders, intelligence agents, diplomats, and founders of the Kosovo Liberation Army—and a close examination of hundreds of previously secret government records from Albania and the United States. A rich, narratively-driven account, Modern Albania gives readers a front-row seat to the dramatic events of the last battle of Cold War Europe.
This book assesses current assumptions about how language is acquired, remembered and retained as impulses in the brain, from the perspective of neurolinguistics, which is based on neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. Fred C. C. Peng argues that language is behaviour, which has evolved in human genetics through time. Like all behaviours, language utilises many body parts which are controlled by the cortical and subcortical structures of the brain. Language in the brain is memory-governed, meaning-centred, and multifaceted. This view is a challenge to conventional neuroscience, which sees language and speech as separate entities; such a convention is not consistent with how the brain functions.Dr Peng's study of language in the brain has wide-reaching implications for the study of language disorders, neurolinguistics, and psycholinguistics in dealing with dementia, aphasia, and schizophrenia. This cutting-edge research monograph presents challenging new insights in the field of neuroscience to a linguistic audience and will also benefit neuroscientists. It will be essential reading for academics researching any aspect of language and the brain.

In situ treatments involving the arrangement of contact between prospective reactants in complex porous media require a refined understanding of solute migration. However, the tools and methods used to predict and control fluid movement in the subsurface need significant improvement. Practitioners and regulators must develop novel methods to achieve an advanced understanding of treatment mechanisms.Remediation Hydraulics addresses the need to predict and control fluid movement in the subsurface. It demonstrates how to conduct realistic assessments of contaminant plume structure and achieve contact between injected reagents and target compounds. The book describes both the advection-dispersion and continuous random walk theories of mass transport as well as explains the practical implications of each theory in remedial system design. In addition, it devotes an entire section to the development of conceptual site models and hydrostratigraphic characterization techniques that will aid practitioners in assessing the role of depositional environments in patterning groundwater flows and containment distributions. Based the authors’ sound experience at over one hundred groundwater treatment projects, this bookprovides an arsenal of relevant theories and practical applications to aid practitioners and regulators in the prediction of fluid movement in the subsurface as well as in the design of pilot to full-scale remediation systems.
There is a need for fundamental changes in the ways society views electric energy. Electric energy must be treated as a commodity which can be bought, sold, and traded, taking into account its time-and space-varying values and costs. This book presents a complete framework for the establishment of such an energy marketplace. The framework is based on the use of spot prices. In general terms: o An hourly spot price (in dollars per kilowatt hour) reflects the operating and capital costs of generating, transmitting and distributing electric energy. It varies each hour and from place to place. o The spot price based energy marketplace involves a variety of utility-customer transactions (ranging from hourly varying prices to long-term, multiple-year contracts), all of which are based in a consistent manner on hourly spot prices. These transactions may include customers selling to, as well as buying from, the utility. The basic theory and practical implementation issues associated with a spot price based energy marketplace have been developed and discussed through a number of different reports, theses, and papers. Each addresses only a part of the total picture, and often with a somewhat different notation and terminology (which has evolved in parallel with our growing experience). This book was xvii xviii Preface written to serve as a single, integrated sourcebook on the theory and imple mentation of a spot price based energy marketplace.
Immortalized in Sidney Lanier's poetry, the Chattahoochee River forms in the hill country of northwest Georgia, near Brasstown Bald, and flows southward to become a mighty southern river before it empties into the Gulf of Mexico at Apalachicola, Florida. For 173 miles of its mid-length it forms the border between Alabama and Georgia, draining a watershed of 877,000 square miles and 18 counties between the two states. As such, the lower Chattahoochee River Valley has been termed the geographical center of the Deep South. Fred Fussell has traveled and explored this area for more than 25 years in his capacities as a museum curator, a folklorist, and a historic preservationist. Camera in hand, mindfully ready to capture the essence of the region, he has made a visual record of the places and the people who perpetuate the music, the stories, and the crafts indigenous to the lower Chattahoochee River Valley. Scenes of family reunions, sacred harp singings, clog dancing, white oak basket weaving, fiddle playing, gourd trees, folk pottery, yard whirligigs, bee keeping, county fairs, canning and preserving, quilting, ""syrup soppin's"", Indian powwows, grave decorations, roadside vendors, and blues balladeers - all portray the Chattahoochee as a rich cultural corridor where folk expression plays a vital role. From the blending of diverse peoples, a singular culture has developed in the lower Chattahoochee River Valley that persists to the present day - diverse, robust, and tradition proud. Published by the Historic Chattahoochee Commission, A Chattahoochee Album is Fred Fussell's personal tribute to the region, lovingly compiled to honor the folklife and traditions of an enduring place and its people.
