Born in Paris 1893, a precocious and tough Freya Stark spent her childhood wondering across Europe, speaking three languages by the time she was five. She became one of the twentieth-century's most remarkable and inspirational women. Renowned for her flamboyant and unorthodox behaviour, Freya was also self-disciplined, courageous and remained fearlessly independent throughout her life. As an explorer she was unconventional, always travelling alone, without money or support. Her expeditions in Persia and the Hadhramaut during the thirties established her reputation not only as a great traveller and writer, but also as a geographer, historian and archaeologist. Caroline Moorehead brilliantly captures Freya's extraordinary and eventful life that was tempered by a constant struggle against ill health and loneliness, in this compelling biography.

The first publication on the work of London-based artist Freya Douglas-Morris documents her first solo exhibition with Alexander Berggruen, New York, in autumn 2023. This star I give to you is the first publication on the work of London-based artist Freya Douglas-Morris, presenting a body of paintings exploring the poetry, beauty and magic of landscapes and the natural world. Born in London in 1980, Douglas-Morris spent several of her childhood years in a village near the coast on the Isle of Wight before she and her family moved back to London. These experiences of the land, sea and sky contributed to her fascination with these subjects in her painting practice: ‘I think my love of being outdoors started then’ she remarks during her interview with British publisher Matt Price for this publication. The interview, which was held in the artist’s East-London studio shortly before Douglas-Morris’s solo exhibition of the same name at Alexander Berggruen, New York, in autumn 2023, explores topics including the artist’s love of walking, the genesis of the body of work in New York’s Central Park and the influence of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century modernist painting on her practice. Featuring the eight large oil paintings on canvas and five oil paintings on copper that were displayed in the exhibition, This star I give to you also includes a foreword by New York-based writer and Associate Director at Alexander Berggruen, Kirsten Cave, along with studio notes by the artist on each of the reproduced works. A graduate of University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art, London, Douglas-Morris has exhibited internationally in China, Taiwan, The Bahamas, Austria, Italy, France and America.

But here is a vision that comes to me; Adventure for you is about to start. Near Asgard you must find the heart. A Secret world there hides away, which holds the power to stop doomsday " When eleven-year-old Freya hears that prophecy from her magical jewel, she isn't sure what to make of it. Doomsday? She will find the key? Mere seconds after that prediction, she receives a mysterious invitation to Asgard Academy from the powerful Odin, who commands her to "bring her magic" to Asgard. With encouragement from her twin, Frey, Freya reluctantly heads out on their new adventure. And Freya's first challenge begins before she even steps foot in Asgard. While trying to navigate the treacherous Bifrost Bridge, she drops her magical jewel off the bridge, and a sneaky pair of dwarves take her jewel down to the world of Midgard Without that jewel, Freya thinks she is powerless. But with the help of her pod-mates at Asgard, Freya discovers a world that is bigger and more mysterious that she ever imagined There, she learns the true terror that Ragnarok--the doomsday her jewel warned her about--could mean for Asgard Academy if she and her new friends, the Thunder Girls, don't stop it
