Smitten by the modernity of Cervantes and Borges at an early age, Carlos Fuentes has written extensively on the cultures of the Americas and elsewhere. His work includes over a dozen novels, among them The Death of Artemio Cruz, Christopher Unborn, The Old Gringo, and Terra Nostra, several volumes of short stories, numerous essays on literary, cultural, and political topics, and some theater.In this book, Raymond Leslie Williams traces the themes of history, culture, and identity in Fuentes' work, particularly in his complex, major novel Terra Nostra. He opens with a biography of Fuentes that links his works to his intellectual life. The heart of the study is Williams' extensive reading of the novel Terra Nostra, in which Fuentes explores the presence of Spanish culture and history in Latin America. Williams concludes with a look at how Fuentes' other fiction relates to Terra Nostra, including Fuentes' own division of his work into fourteen cycles that he calls "La Edad del Tiempo," and with an interview in which Fuentes discusses his concept of this cyclical division.

Literature and History in Carlos Fuentes: Imperfect Creations analyzes the work of Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012), one of the most widely recognized Mexican novelists. This book is divided into five chapters that cover the path of the discussions on: a) the identity of the Mexican within the post-revolutionary culture, based on ontological and existentialist approaches; b) the understanding of language and modernity, as well as the danger that societies face thanks to populism; c) the understanding of literature based on desire, imagination, eroticism and its relationship with the visual image; d) as well as the understanding of the other borders of literature such as the policies that divide countries, specifically Mexico-United States, in one of the most profound reflections on the subject; e) to finish with the way in which Fuentes perceived himself in the Cervantes heritage, a dialogue from which he sought to extract representational elements of that modernity from which he sought to understand some of Mexico's dilemmas.

Es besteht aus f nf Kapiteln, von denen "Las dos orillas" das erste darstellt. Die darin enthaltenen bersetzerfiguren sollen in der vorliegenden Arbeit analysiert werden. Dabei soll der Schwerpunkt auf das bersetzungskonzept der Figuren, sowie auf deren Missbrauch ihres Berufs gelegt werden. Im Rahmen des Booms in der lateinamerikanischen Literatur hat der Vorschlag des "realismo simbolico" von Carlos Fuentes bislang wenig Aufmerksamkeit gefunden. Als neue literaturtheoretische Kategorie vertieft Fuentes die Verknupfung von Identitatsdiskussion sowie symbolischen und mythischen Motivstrukturen zu einem Neuansatz, der einen umfassenden Zugang zur lateinamerikanischen Realitat leisten soll. Die Reichweite dieses Anspruchs wird hier sowohl im Gesamtwerk von Carlos Fuentes wie auch besonders anhand seiner Erzahlungen untersucht. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Verbindung der mythischen Strukturkomponenten mit der symbolischen Realitatsauffassung neue Wege einer eigenstandigen Literaturschule eroffnet, die der Komplexitat von Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und zukunftiger Bestimmung lateinamerikanischer Wirklichkeit besser gerecht wird."
