This study aims to identify the devices, strategies, functions and purposes of hedging employed in Shaw's Arms and the Man, Man and Superman, and Pygmalion. To fulfill this aim, an eclectic model is adopted, integrating the taxonomies of Salager-Meyer (1997), Hyland (1998), Varttala (2001) and Fraser (2010). Blending qualitative and quantitative methods, the data analysis shows that sixteen lexical and syntactic hedges are found in each play, and the most frequently employed device is the modal auxiliary. These devices are used as strategies of intimacy, irony, avoidance, concealment, depersonalization, downtoning, indetermination, persuasion, politeness, and subjectivization. The analysis also brings into light their different functions along with their descriptive, dramatic and thematic purposes. The findings indicate that hedging shows, to a greater extent, Shaw's reliability in creating his drama, and reveals how he drags readers to take part in his philosophical debates, leading them, like himself, into an endless loop of tentativeness.

Questo studio si propone di identificare i dispositivi, le strategie, le funzioni e gli scopi della copertura utilizzati in Arms and the Man, Man and Superman e Pygmalion di Shaw. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, viene adottato un modello eclettico che integra le tassonomie di Salager-Meyer (1997), Hyland (1998), Varttala (2001) e Fraser (2010). L'analisi dei dati, che combina metodi qualitativi e quantitativi, mostra che in ogni opera teatrale si trovano sedici coperture lessicali e sintattiche e che il dispositivo pi frequentemente utilizzato l'ausiliare modale. Questi dispositivi sono utilizzati come strategie di intimit , ironia, evitamento, dissimulazione, spersonalizzazione, abbassamento, indeterminazione, persuasione, cortesia e soggettivazione. L'analisi mette in luce anche le loro diverse funzioni e i loro scopi descrittivi, drammatici e tematici. I risultati indicano che l'hedging mostra, in misura maggiore, l'affidabilit di Shaw nel creare il suo dramma e rivela come egli trascini i lettori a partecipare ai suoi dibattiti filosofici, conducendoli, come lui stesso, in un circolo vizioso senza fine.

Niniejsze badanie ma na celu zidentyfikowanie urządzeń, strategii, funkcji i cel w hedgingu zastosowanych w filmach Shawa Arms and the Man, Man and Superman i Pygmalion. Aby osiągnąc ten cel, przyjęto model eklektyczny, integrujący taksonomie Salager-Meyer (1997), Hyland (1998), Varttala (2001) i Fraser (2010). Lącząc metody jakościowe i ilościowe, analiza danych pokazuje, że w każdej sztuce występuje szesnaście leksykalnych i skladniowych hedges, a najczęściej stosowanym narzędziem jest modalny środek pomocniczy. Narzędzia te są wykorzystywane jako strategie intymności, ironii, unikania, ukrywania, depersonalizacji, downtoningu, nieokreśloności, perswazji, grzeczności i subiektywizacji. Analiza ujawnia r wnież ich r żne funkcje wraz z ich celami opisowymi, dramatycznymi i tematycznymi. Wyniki wskazują, że hedging pokazuje w większym stopniu wiarygodnośc Shawa w tworzeniu jego dramatu i ujawnia, w jaki spos b wciąga on czytelnik w w swoje filozoficzne debaty, prowadząc ich, podobnie jak siebie, w niekończącą się pętlę niepewności.

Ziel dieser Studie ist es, die Mittel, Strategien, Funktionen und Zwecke der Absicherung in Shaws Arms and the Man, Man and Superman und Pygmalion zu ermitteln. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Absicherung in gr erem Ma e Shaws Verl sslichkeit bei der Schaffung seines Dramas zeigt und offenbart, wie er die Leser in seine philosophischen Debatten hineinzieht und sie, wie er selbst, in eine endlose Schleife der Ungewissheit f hrt.
