Roman de jeunesse, roman personnel, Georges reprend en les adaptant maints l ments de l'histoire familiale de Dumas. Saint-Domingue fait place l'Ile de France, colonie exotique dont la prosp rit repose sur l'esclavage. Georges est de sang m l , comme Dumas et son p re. Son nom et son s jour brillant Paris rappellent videmment le chevalier de Saint-Georges, avec qui le g n ral Dumas combattit dans la l gion des Am ricains et du Midi (lointain cho de la troupe noire conduite par Pierre Munier). Quant la r volte des n gres, Dumas tablit lui-m me la comparaison avec le soul vement de Saint-Domingue et l'ind pendance d'Ha ti, th me qui garda par la suite une certaine actualit (Bug-Jargal de Victor Hugo en 1826, Toussaint Louverture de Lamartine en 1840, "bons d'Ha ti" dans Le Comte de Monte-Cristo). L'identification va bien s r jusqu' l'auteur: m tis, il fut l'objet de sarcasmes ("Grattez l' corce de M. Dumas et vous trouverez le sauvage", Eug ne de Mirecourt). Cet unique roman consacr aux "fr res de sang et amis de couleur", double manifeste contre le racisme et la condition servile, s'insurge contre l'absurdit du pr jug dont est victime un homme d'une exceptionnelle valeur (Georges), l'exploitation de l'homme par l'homme (les esclaves des Malm die), et la d tresse du d racinement (exprim e avec beaucoup de force dans le personnage de Nazim).

Quand Georges devient un homme engag dans la sup riorit morale m l e de force physique; la sc ne est en conflit avec le riche et puissant propri taire de plantations de l' le, Monsieur de Malm, je ne peux rien y faire, et une histoire d'amour interdite avec Sara, la belle femme fianc e au fils de Malm. Avec le jeu de l'escrime, une r bellion d'esclaves, une vasion poignante et un voeu de vengeance, Georges est incontestablement l'oeuvre du ma tre qui a crit "Les Trois Mousquetaires" et "Le Comte de Monte-Cristo". Pourtant, il se distingue comme le seul livre que Dumas a jamais crit qui confronte le sujet de la race, un sujet puissant, puisque Dumas tait lui-m me d'origine africaine. Cette dition comprend galement une introduction captivante de Jamaica Kincaid et une postface et des notes loquentes de Werner Sollors, qui aborde des th mes cl s tels que le colonialisme, le racisme, l'esclavage africain et l'intimit interraciale. Longtemps puis en Am rique, Georges peut maintenant tre appr ci comme jamais auparavant et ajout aux plus grandes oeuvres de cet auteur immortel.
