Hong Kong's Reunion with China: The Global Dimensions

Hong Kong's Reunion with China: The Global Dimensions

Gerard A. Postiglione; James Tuck-Hong Tang

Routledge
1997
sidottu
The issues surrounding Hong Kong's global position and international links grow increasingly complex by the day as the process of Hong Kong's transformation from a British colony to a Chinese Special Administration Region unfolds. This volume addresses a number of questions relating to this process. How international is Hong Kong? What are its global and international dimensions? How important are these dimensions to its continued success? How will these dimensions change, especially beyond the sphere of economics? Is Hong Kong's internationalization, defined in terms of its willingness to embrace international values and its capacity to maintain its international presence, at risk? These questions are presented as they pertain to the changing situation; relations between mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; the positions of Australia, Canada and the United States on Hong Kong; internalization of international legal values; Americanization vs. Asianization; linkages to the world through Guangdong; strategies to emigrate overseas, cultural internationalization; media internationalization and universities within the global economy.

Exploring Advanced Euclidean Geometry With GeoGebra

Exploring Advanced Euclidean Geometry With GeoGebra

Gerard A. Venema

Mathematical Association of America
2013
sidottu
This book provides an enquiry-based introduction to advanced Euclidean geometry. It utilises the dynamic geometry program GeoGebra to explore many of the most interesting theorems in the subject. Topics covered include triangle centres, inscribed, circumscribed and escribed circles, medial and orthic triangles, the nine-point circle, the theorems of Ceva and Menelaus, and many applications. The final chapter explores constructions in the Poincare disk model for hyperbolic geometry. The book can be used either as a computer laboratory manual to supplement an undergraduate course or as a stand-alone introduction to advanced topics in Euclidean geometry. The exposition consists almost entirely of exercises (with hints) that guide students as they discover the geometric relationships for themselves. The ideas are first explored at the computer and then assembled into a proof of the result under investigation, allowing readers to experience the joy of discovery and develop a deeper appreciation for the subject.

Exploring recent developments in continuum mechanics, Configurational Forces: Thermomechanics, Physics, Mathematics, and Numerics presents the general framework for configurational forces. It also covers a range of applications in engineering and condensed matter physics. The author presents the fundamentals of accepted standard continuum mechanics, before introducing Eshelby material stress, field theory, variational formulations, Noether’s theorem, and the resulting conservation laws. In the chapter on complex continua, he compares the classical perspective of B.D. Coleman and W. Noll with the viewpoint linked to abstract field theory. He then describes the important notion of local structural rearrangement and its relationship to Eshelby stress. After looking at the relevance of Eshelby stress in the thermodynamic description of singular interfaces, the text focuses on fracture problems, microstructured media, systems with mass exchanges, and electromagnetic deformable media. The concluding chapters discuss the exploitation of the canonical conservation law of momentum in nonlinear wave propagation, the application of canonical-momentum conservation law and material force in numerical schemes, and similarities of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics.Written by a long-time researcher in mechanical engineering, this book provides a detailed treatment of the theory of configurational forces—one of the latest and most fruitful advances in macroscopic field theories. Through many applications, it shows the depth and efficiency of this theory.
Education, Ethnicity, Society and Global Change in Asia
In the World Library of Educationalists series, international experts compile career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces – extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, major theoretical and practical contributions – so the world can read them in a single manageable volume. Readers will be able to follow the themes and strands and see how their work contributes to the development of the field. For more than three decades, Gerard A. Postiglione has witnessed first-hand the globalization of education and society in Hong Kong, China and the wider Asian region. He is a pioneer among Western scholars in the field and his fluency in Chinese has resulted in innovative primary research and fieldwork. He has brought sociological, policy, and comparative perspectives to important educational issues in Asia. His research emphasizes the diversity and complexity of the region, from studies of education and the academic profession during Hong Kong’s retrocession, to reform of ethnic minority education and the rise of world class universities in the Chinese mainland, as well as the complexity of mass higher education in an increasingly dynamic Asia. He is one of the researchers most sought-after by international organizations concerned with educational reform in Asia and by major media outlets to inform the public on issues of globalization and higher education. Gerard was honoured by the Comparative and International Education Society with a Lifetime Contribution Award and Best Book Award for his contribution to the field. In 2016 he was inducted as a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association. This selection of 12 of his most representative papers and chapters documents his scholarship in comparative higher education in Asia.

This book gives healthcare leaders a practical guide to implementing the 4 key components of lean daily management system - 1. LDM boards; 2. Leadership rounds 3. Leader daily disciplines and 4. Lean projects. Although lean is not new to healthcare, effective LDM is just now taking hold with the best lean healthcare organizations in the U.S. and Canada. Leaders are realizing that sustaining their lean projects over time has proven to be a challenge without first addressing the organizations management system/model. LDM gives leaders a straightforward approach to do just that as well as improve their ability to spread and deploy lean to other areas of the organization and tie back to strategy.

When 5-year-old Adam witnessed the horrific murder of his father, his innocence was shattered. The only way he learned to deal with his anger was by secretly mutilating small farm animals. However, in the small town of Cliftonville, secrets don't stay buried for long... and while rumors die hard, townfolk are more likely to pin the massacres to the infamous Chupacabras... because, who would ever suspect clever little Adam? Will a skeptical mother go to extremes to help her disturbed son? Flash forward 26 years to the future, and Adam has upgraded his morbid practice... Now, the only person who can end the amassing of bodies is the new physician from Cliftonville Memorial Hospital, Dr. Sotelo. But the good doctor isn't prepared for the horrors he'll encounter in Adam's dark playroom. This handy guide puts a new twist on your teaching and training practices and shows how you can stimulate and invigorate learners through state-changing activities engaging techniques to help refocus the brain and create a receptive state of mind that enhances learning. Each section presents specific state-changing activities and the brain research behind them. While the strategies are geared for secondary classrooms, all can be adapted across grade levels. Classroom Activators illustrates how simple changes in delivering instruction or designing the classroom environment can help capture student interest and keep learners focused. The author examines state-changing activities within four categories: Energizing the Environment: examines ways to keep the learning environment fresh Getting Your Students' Attention: offers ideas to help students focus on the task at hand Energizing Your Students: presents techniques to use when the students may need a to refocus attention in the middle of a lesson Building Teams and Community: includes activities for community building, team building, and rapport building
