Above All, be Good

Above All, be Good

The pursuit of wisdom and the good life runs like a thread throughout the history of humanity. Among the many groups and individuals who have attempted to propagate a natural philosophy of living, the Stoics stand out both for their persistence and perseverance as a philosophy school, and for their influence on the history of humanity. We all want to live a good life, but while many of us accept the ready made answers our society, education and media offer - the Stoics believed that the real answer to the question of the good life must pass through the use of our own reason, which should not be confused with the intellect. Stoicism developed in times in which people were losing touch with metaphysical values and the wisdom of the ancients. Today, with the disintegration of the moral traditions of our cultures, we are seeking answers as well, a wise way of life in a chaotic world. The pragmatic teachings of the Stoics find a listening ear among contemporary seekers, as they come from a time very similar to our own. From Zeno, an eclectic philosopher who taught in the Stoa of Athens, to Marcus Aurelius, the great philosopher king who left his thoughts to posterity, this is the story of the Stoics and their teachings.

Surprise is rarely a good thing in business. Unexpected developments range in their effects from inconvenient to disastrous. To avoid being blindsided, companies must develop a Competitive Early Warning system, or CEW, which combines strategic planning, competitive intelligence, and management action. Such systems let organizations manage risk more effectively and prevent ""industry dissonance"" -- when market realities outpace corporate strategies. Early Warning reveals how to: * Change strategy to meet new realities * Learn from the mistakes of others via the book’s eye-opening stories * Avoid common tactics like benchmarking and using consultants, which may do more harm than good * Tell executives what they need to know -- not what they want to hear Each chapter ends with a Manager’s Checklist of key points, and the book includes numerous charts, tables, and tools. With strong opinions and wry humor, world-recognized expert Gilad reveals how to anticipate and react to early signs of trouble.

Global Democracy

Global Democracy

Oded Gilad; Dena Freeman

Democracy Without Borders
2022
pokkari
Why is humanity failing to solve the climate crisis, to deal effectively with pandemics, to curb the power of multinational corporations and to create a more equal, just and sustainable world for everyone? This book, based on a series of video lectures on YouTube, provides an answer: it is because of the political division of the world into some two hundred separate nation states, each vying for its own interests, and with no-one looking at what is good for the world as a whole. The authors argue that the only way to solve global problems and to truly bring about global justice, is for everyone to come together in one, universal, global democratic system. This is a radical, inspiring and provocative book - a must-read for everyone who believes that a better world is needed.

Seeking Asylum in Israel

Seeking Asylum in Israel

Ben-Nun Gilad

I.B. Tauris
2016
sidottu
Since 2005, approximately 70,000 asylum-seeking refugees from Sudan and Eritrea have entered Israel. This, along with the highly publicised anti-African immigrant riots in Israel in 2012 and 2014 and the current global refugee crisis, has meant that the issue of African migration has become increasingly controversial. Here Gilad Ben-Nun looks at this phenomenon in its historical and contemporary contexts, and compares it to the wider debates surrounding the Palestinian refugees in the region and the concept of their right of return. He argues that this newer, African migration issue has forced Israel to move from conceiving of itself as an 'exceptional' state and now has to view itself as a more 'normal' and 'universal' entity. Ranging as far back as Israel's important role in the the ratification drafting of the 1951 Refugee Convention and drawing on a variety of methodologies and sources, Ben-Nun offers a wide-ranging legal, social and historical examination of asylum in Israel, that sheds timely light onto themes of migration and identity across the Middle East. This is essential reading for legal historians and lawyers, as well as scholars working on migration studies and the history and politics of the Middle East.
