Over the course of a decade, French photographer Jean-Luc Bertini traveled the length and breadth of the United States, creating portraits of the unique circumstance of isolation fostered by the country’s geographic circumstances and its espousal of an individualist ethos. Bertini casts his subjects against the vast backdrops of the country, exploring all the nuances of isolation, from solitude to loneliness. This perspective produces an usual and fresh take on America as a nation. In his preface, Richard Ford, author of The Sportswriter, Independence Day, The Lay of the Land and Let Me Be Frank With You, focuses on the physiognomies of solitude in America: “Looking at his work, we build up an idea of the unique character of American solitudes, in non-binary terms, in which what is ours does not only belong to us.”
Ethics Introduced: Readings in Moral Philosophy in an anthology that provides students with foundational knowledge in moral philosophy by exposing them to a variety of classical and contemporary readings in ethical theory and application. The anthology is divided into four parts. In Part 1, students learn about meta-ethics and question the status of moral truths through selections by Nietzsche, Ruth Benedict, and Smith. In Part 2, the question of what we should value most is addressed through readings on hedonism, Aristotelian Virtue Ethics, Confucianism, and Buddhism. Part 3 focuses on normative ethics, diving into theories such as egoism, divine command theory, utilitarianism, Kantianism, care ethics, and more. Part 4 rounds out the anthology by helping students think through moral problems and contemporary controversies. Readings in this section address death and dying, abortion, war, treatment of animals and the environment, and the nature of moral obligations to people in need. Throughout the text, each reading is supported by an introduction, study questions, and suggestions for further reading and exploration to inspire critical thinking and additional analysis. Ethics Introduced is ideal for introductory ethics courses and can also be used in comparative religion, philosophy, and humanities courses.Dennis Arjo earned his B.A. in philosophy from the University of California, Santa Cruz, M.A. in philosophy from University of Colorado, and Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Pol Bury (1922-2005) was a painter, sculptor, jewelry designer, writer, and graphic artist, but is perhaps best known to the general public for his fountains and sculpture in public spaces throughout the world. Acclaimed as one of the first proponents of “moving” works, driven by a motor, he became one of the protagonists of kinetic art and was without doubt one of Belgium’s most important postwar artists. Accompanying a major exhibition in Belgium, this publication presents an opportunity to rediscover Bury’s multifaceted oeuvre. Giles of Rome was the archbishop of Bourges and a loyal champion of Pope Boniface VIII during the Franco-papal crisis of 1296-1303. On Ecclesiastical Power was written at the height of the conflict between Pope Boniface VIII and King Philip IV of France and represents the earliest fully articulated and philosophically developed defense of the "hierocratic" ideology of the medieval papacy. Giles's theory that all government must be legitimized by the pope was based on scriptural, philosophical, patristic, and canonical sources, and his conclusion that the pope is the rightful ruler and final judge of the world-even in secular matters-is the definitive statement on papal power in the Middle Ages. This book offers a new and complete critical edition of the Latin text, based on a collation of five fourteenth-century manuscripts. It is accompanied by a literal English translation and a detailed introduction analyzing the context and content of the treatise. The book takes into account the hitherto unconsidered Cremona manuscript of On Ecclesiastical Power and will be indispensable to scholars and students of the history of political thought and international relations.
In this outrageously farcical adventure, hero George Giles sets out to conquer the terrible Wescac computer system that threatens to destroy his community in this brilliant "fantasy of theology, sociology, and sex" (Time).
From the time of its composition (c.1280) for Philip the Fair of France until the early sixteenth century, Giles of Rome's mirror of princes, the De regimine principum, was read by both lay and clerical readers in the original Latin and in several vernacular translations, and served as model or source for several works of princely advice. This study examines the relationship between this didactic political text and its audience by focusing on the textual and material aspects of the surviving manuscript copies, as well as on the evidence of ownership and use found in them and in documentary and literary sources. Briggs argues that lay readers used De regimine for several purposes, including as an educational treatise and military manual, whereas clerics, who often first came into contact with it at university, glossed, constructed apparatus for, and modified the text to suit their needs in their later professional lives.

Sometimes, a simple field trip to the planetarium can be an act of bravery. As a result and surprising no one, he finds himself divorced and overwhelmed by the demands of parenting nine-year-old Milo -a shy, awkward clone of his father. Not wanting Milo to struggle through life the way he has, Giles enlists the help of Reid Marshall's new nanny agency.Of all the nannies in Manhattan... But sweet, clever, outgoing Riley is exactly what Milo needs.Riley thinks he knows what he's getting into when he accepts a position working for his childhood nemesis, but Milo steals his heart the moment they meet. And "Giles the Jerk" isn't as bad as Riley remembers. Or maybe Giles was never really all that bad...
