"A real contribution to an over-discussed subject.... This book reaches below the surface to the real issues and relationships that confront principles in their orchestration of the daily affairs of teachers, parents, and students."--Harold Howe II, former president of the Ford Foundation for Education and Public Policy Based on the work of the prestigious Harvard Principal's Center, this book shares some of the "sense" that practicing principals have made of their own complex experiences. The authors offer real-life case examples of typical leadership dilemmas in such areas as student discipline, teacher assessment, fiscal management, parental involvement, and schoolwide planning.

Germany 1866-1945

This is the history of the rise and fall of united Germany, which lasted only 75 years from its establishment by Bismark in 1870, and ended in the rubble of Hitler's regime. Gordon Craig not only analyses the political structures of and the foreign, social, and economic policies of successive governments, but also examines the individuals who dominated the period and the important intellectual and cultural influences at work. His fascinating chapter on the rich diversity of Weimar culture - Mann and Hesse, Marlene Deitrich and film, Brecht, Schonberg, Expressionist art, and the growth of psychoanalytic theory - is proof enough that this is not an ordinary history book.

Craig deals with a question that has always been a point of controversy: do political writers have responsibility and are they obliged to show political engagement in their works? Craig answers this question by studying ten German writers from 1770-1871, among them Goethe, Schiller, Kleist, and Heine and finds that these `unpolitical' writers were actively engaged in their politics.

Learning to Lead

Learning to Lead

Does a school respond in knee-jerk fashion to hourly stimuli or does it have a purposeful design structuring its life? The school's principal directly influences the answer to this question. Gordon Donaldson puts aside current books and courses which neatly compartmentalize the ideal principalship. Instead he examines the everyday realities of the position. Donaldson captures the insides of the job--the principal's interpersonal work life. Drawing from his own experience and contemporary studies, he identifies and examines three crucial functions of high school leaders: choosing activities that serve the school's purposes, identifying and enlisting capable partners, and developing and maintaining productive relationships. As our expectations for principals and their schools rise, and as current literature continues to prescribe unrealistic roles for principals, Learning to Lead takes a new look at the principal's fundamental function--facilitating faculty and staff to teach and nurture children. This is a hands-on source for academicians and graduate students examining the organizational dynamics of secondary schools and leadership. This detailed study of the complex factors impinging on the American high school principal begins with a synopsis of current knowledge. It then describes the three functions, making use of extensive primary data collected from the author's faculty and staff. The final three chapters explore themes that have emerged from the preceding examination of leadership dynamics: lessons for successful fulfillment of each leadership function, paradoxes complicating a principal's effort to order and rationalize his/her world, and personal qualities necessary for successful high school leadership. Donaldson closes with recommendations for the education and continuing development of principals. This volume portrays a school principal within his school context and introduces a method of gathering feedback about leadership effectiveness from school faculty and staff.

Examining how Crane's corporeal aesthetic informs poems written across the span of his career, The Machine ThatSings focuses on four texts in which Crane's preoccupation with the body reaches its apoge. Tapper treats Voyages, The Wine Merchant, and Possessions as a triptych of erotic poems in which Crane plays out alternative resolutions to the dialectic between purity and defilement, a conceptual dynamic which Tapper argues is central to both Crane's poetics of difficulty and his representations of homosexual desire. Tapper concentrates on the three sections of The Bridge, most concerned with recuperating animality: 'National Winter Garden,' 'The Dance,' and 'Cape Hatteras.'

They have given mankind unique triumphs in science, literature, philosophy, music, and art. They have also produced Hitler and the Holocaust. They are romantic and conservative, idealistic and practical, proud and insecure, ruthless and good-natured. They are, in short, the Germans. In this definitive history, Professor Gordon A. Craig, one of the world’s premier authorities on Germany, comes to grips with the complex paradoxes at the heart of the German identity. His masterly study explores the roots of many contemporary institutions in German history and closely examines such topics as religion, money, Germans and Jews, women, professors and students, romantics, literature and society, soldiers, Berlin, and the German language. Craig also discusses the events surrounding the fall of the Berlin Wall and the German reunification, while offering invaluable insights into Germany’s pivotal role in world affairs for over a century.
Risk Assessment in Geotechnical Engineering

Risk Assessment in Geotechnical Engineering

Gordon A. Fenton; D. V. Griffiths

John Wiley Sons Inc
2008

NEW PROBABILISTIC APPROACHES FOR REALISTIC RISK ASSESSMENT IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING. This text presents a thorough examination of the theories and methodologies available for risk assessment in geotechnical engineering, spanning the full range from established single-variable and "first order" methods to the most recent, advanced numerical developments. In response to the growing application of LRFD methodologies in geotechnical design, coupled with increased demand for risk assessments from clients ranging from regulatory agencies to insurance companies, authors Fenton and Griffiths have introduced an innovative reliability-based risk assessment method, the Random Finite Element Method (RFEM). The authors have spent more than fifteen years developing this statistically based method for modeling the real spatial variability of soils and rocks. As demonstrated in the book, RFEM performs better in real-world applications than traditional risk assessment tools that do not properly account for the spatial variability of geomaterials. This text is divided into two parts: Part One, Theory, explains the theory underlying risk assessment methods in geotechnical engineering. This part's seven chapters feature more than 100 worked examples, enabling you to develop a detailed understanding of the methods. Part Two, Practice, demonstrates how to use advanced probabilistic tools for several classical geotechnical engineering applications. Working with the RFEM, the authors show how to assess risk in problems familiar to all geotechnical engineers. All the programs used for the geotechnical applications discussed in Part Two may be downloaded from the authors' Web site at www.engmath.dal.ca/rfem/ at no charge, enabling you to duplicate the authors' results and experiment with your own data. In short, you get all the theory and practical guidance you need to apply the most advanced probabilistic approaches for managing uncertainty in geotechnical design.
