Witch hunts are the result of gendered, cultural and socioeconomic struggles over acute structural, economic and social transformations in both the formation of gendered class societies and that of patriarchal capitalism. This book combines political economy with gender and cultural analysis to explain the articulation of cultural beliefs about women as causing harm, and struggles over patriarchy in periods of structural economic transformation. It brings in field data from India and South-East Asia and incorporates a large body of works on witch hunts across geographies and histories. Witch Hunts is a scholarly analysis of the human rights violation of women and its correction through changes in beliefs, knowledge practices and adaptation in structural transformation.

Agrawal, delivers brand-new updates and developments in the science of fiber optics communications. The book contains substantial additions covering the topics of coherence detection, space division multiplexing, and more advanced subjects. You'll learn about topics like fiber’s losses, dispersion, and nonlinearities, as well as coherent lightwave systems. The latter subject has undergone major changes due to the extensive development of digital coherent systems over the last decade. Space-division multiplexing is covered as well, including multimode and multicore fibers developed in just the last ten years. Finally, the book concludes with a chapter on brand-new developments in the field that are still at the development stage and likely to become highly relevant for practitioners and researchers in the coming years. Readers will also benefit from the inclusion of: A thorough introduction to the fundamentals of fiber-optic communication systemsAn exploration of the management of fiber-optic communication losses, dispersion, and nonlinearitiesA practical discussion of coherent lightwave systems, including coherent transmitters and receivers, as well as noise and bit-error rate, sensitivity degradation mechanisms, and the impact of nonlinear effectsA concise treatment of space-division multiplexing, including multicore and multimode fibers, multicore lightwave systems, and multimode lightwave systemsAnalyses of advanced topics, including pulse shaping for higher spectral efficiency, Kramers-Kronig receivers, nonlinear Fourier transform, wavelength conversion, and optical regeneration Perfect for graduate students, professors, scientists, and professional engineers working or studying in the area of telecommunications technology, Fiber-Optic Communication Systems is an essential update to the leading reference in the area of fiber-optic communications.
Nutrition and Brain Development

Nutrition and Brain Development

The effect of nutrition on the vital process of brain development has received increased attention in the last two decades. Using animal models, experimental research scientists have accumulated a wealth of infor mation and epidemiological studies of field workers have brought the animals and human studies together. Most times, there is an agreement on the results of animal and human experiences, but occasionally a voice of uncertainty is heard when results of animal studies are extrapolated to humans. After all, the human brain is far more complex than that of other species, and comparisons are not always accurate. Behavioral sci entists have attempted to correlate the findings of the biochemists and neurochemists to the "working" of the brain. Severe effects of malnutrition on body growth and function can usually be reversed by corrective procedures. But when such effects include the impact on brain development, the outcome can be devas tating. Underdevelopment of the brain caused by malnutrition during early life may not respond to corrective measures in later life. Undoubt edly this is a very controversial issue and the final verdict has not been reached. Unfortunately, even with today's tremendous technological innovations and applications, there are millions of people, including infants and children, who cannot obtain adequate food and are therefore exposed to damaging effects on the orderly development of the central vii PREFACE viii nervous system. Thus, this is a critical issue to many struggling popu lations who can ill afford such deprivation.

For both sprouting and mature firms, demanding customers show tough love. How to transform those discontented grim faces into loyal and faithful brand ambassadors is what the coming pages have in store for you The backbone of any corporate kingdom is its vast customer network - correction: its happy customer network. So, what about the unhappy ones? Actually, they can become the steel nerves of your company But how does that happen? Explore the answers as you read through Most of the incidents illustrated in this book revolve around familiar characters one might have seen and forgotten. The Indian viewpoint depicted here merely mirrors our observations, and does not represent everyone alike. It is just a hilarious account of how we, as Indians, have some common traits as consumers. After all, the ability to laugh at oneself is the mark of a genius This book is inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold or silver. The golden scars sculpt a precious future, upholding the unique, yet valuable crevices of the past - an enlightening principle guiding any relationship. A customer - corporate bond too, prospers by mending mistakes, acknowledging them and looking ahead for a faithful rapport. Written by a seasoned corporate executive and a millennial IITian, this book captures the evolving preferences of Indian customers. A thoughtful read for casual and serious business purposes alike

The plant pathogenic fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum causes white stem rot of crucifers and is considered one of the most destructive and cosmopolitan of plant pathogens. It infects over 900 species of plants worldwide including important field crops, cash crops, vegetable crops, fruit crops, ornamental plants, trees, shrubs and numerous weeds. Sclerotinia is widely distributed throughout temperate regions but also occurs in more arid areas. A lack of adequate host genetic resistance, the wide host range of the pathogen, and the difficulty in managing the disease all contribute to Sclerotinia's extensive crop damage within both broad acre and horticultural crops. Recent advances in genomics and sequences available on Brassica species and S. sclerotiorum have provided unique information on the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions. This has revealed pathogen biology, pathogenesis, effector genes and molecular mechanisms of host resistance in Brassica crops. This first volume, Biology and Ecology, covers aspects of: . Historical developments. . Geographical distribution and host range. . The pathogen - Sclerotinia. . Reproduction, reproductive structures, and ultra-structures. . The disease, symptomatology, assessment, and economic importance. . Infection pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms. . Biochemistry and physiology of host-pathogen interactions. . Future research priorities of Sclerotinia on biology and ecology.

A must-read for Dev Anand fans and students of film history "A broken nose sometimes makes a great boxer," said the evergreen Bollywood star Dev Anand after his movie Ishq Ishq Ishq did not work at the box office. In his sixty-five years of unchallenged dominance as the most-loved Hindi film star, Dev Anand gave us several memorable hits like Guide, Taxi Driver, Hum Dono, Johny Mera Naam, and Hare Rama Hare Krishna. He was not only an exceptionally handsome and stylish hero. His 'man of the future' philosophy is worth emulating by persons of all generations. He neither celebrated his successes nor lamented over his failures. A Karma Yogi, in the true sense of the term, he produced, directed, and acted in a lead role in a movie at the age of eighty-eight, which is without parallel in the history of Bollywood. The book attempts to analyse why his philosophy of life is a source of inspiration for all. It also gives a detailed filmography from Hum Ek Hain to Charge Sheet, with a separate chapter on Guide, and a special write-up on his genius brother Vijay Anand.
