The Great Controversy Between God And Man, Christ And Satan, H.L. Hastings And E.G. White
This is the book Ellen G. White has been accused of copying. H.L. Hastings' "The Great Controversy between God and Man" was published in January, 1858, and was reviewed by James White just months before he published his wife's own version of "The Great Controversy". Included is Ellen White's original 1858 version - much different than the oft-revised edition promoted today. Both books in this one volume By comparing these two Great Controversies of 1858, you can determine for yourself the extent of E.G. White's inspiration from visions, and inspiration from one of the most popular Second Advent Movement writers of her time - Horace L. Hastings.
A Life of H.L.A. Hart

A Life of H.L.A. Hart

Nicola Lacey

Shortlisted for the 2005 British Academy Book prize, Nicola Lacey's entrancing biography recounts the life of H.L.A. Hart, the pre-eminent legal philosopher of the twentieth century. Following Hart's life from modest origins as the son of Jewish tailor parents in Yorkshire to worldwide fame as the most influential English-speaking legal theorist of the post-War era, the book traces his successive metamorphoses; from Yorkshire schoolboy to Oxford scholar, from government intelligence officer to Professor of Jurisprudence, from awkward batchelor to family figurehead. In the tradition of Ray Monk's biography of Wittgenstein, Nicola Lacey paints an absorbing picture of intellectual and psychological development, of a mind struggling to cope with intellectual self-doubt, uncertain sexuality, a difficult marriage and an anti-semitic society. In depicting the evolution of Hart's life and mind, Lacey provides a vivid recreation of both the intellectual and social climate of Oxford in the post-War era.

All the main topics of Hart's philosophical writings are featured: general jurisprudence and legal positivism; criminal responsibility and punishment; theories of rights; toleration and liberty; theories of justice; and causation in the law.

... recent sport history has shown that today's professional competitors are relying more and more on PEDs - Performance Enhancing Drugs - to gain an advantage to win - less so for the resulting fame and glory than for the increasingly lucrative contracts and commercial endorsements - the attraction of such unprecedented wealth has so blurred the definition of what an athlete is or has become that it seems the time has come to hit the proverbial 'Reset Button' - to redefine what an athlete is or is supposed to be - based on the historical legacy we inherited from ancient Greece - this text focuses on those athletes who - like the author - are the unheralded - the unsupported - those without the glory - fame and wealth that accompanies it - there are no fans to witness the accomplishments - no medals - no sports reporters at the finish line - the personal sweet victories or bitter defeats are theirs alone - it is a story of the sheer pain day in and day out that accompanies their pursuit of athletic excellence or ar te on their own personal scale - it is at once a story of the competitive spirit - its inexplicable loss and rediscovery - it is ongoing this 'Life in Athletics' - it is a simplistic and humble account of this authors athletic experiences that are not meant to be 'the voice' of all athletes but for those who have pursued athletics with similar ambitions in the hope that it will also inspire others to do so ...

Rhetoric Of The Unselfconscious In D H L

Rhetoric Of The Unselfconscious In D H L

In this study of the Lady Chatterley novels, Masami Nakabayashi pays particular attention to D.H. Lawrence's language for the feelings and for the life of the unselfconscious, sexual body. The novels constantly find ways of verbalising the characters' internalised experiences as they occur in states of unselfconsciousness. Lawrence's language for sensual feelings and emotions has always been regarded as simply 'sexual' and no previous critics have explored or made sense of the complexities of his peculiar, but extremely sophisticated, writing practice in the Lady Chatterley novels. Lawrence was a habitual reviser of his work, and, despite the availability of reliable texts in the Cambridge edition, few critics have traced the nature and significance of his changes from one draft to the next. By examining and analysing the novels' particular linguistic revisions, Masami Nakabayashi reveals the textual impulse behind Lawrence's original conception and its subsequent change and development.
