A new consideration of the playful and unsettling sculptures of H. C. Westermann, guiding figure of American conceptualism and craft An acrobat, carpenter, railroad repairman, and two-time naval war veteran, sculptor H. C. Westermann (1922–1981) rose to prominence in Chicago in the 1950s with new forms inspired by his personal experiences. This overdue reassessment of an understudied artist includes stunning new photographs of Westermann’s intricate and exceptionally crafted sculptures throughout his career. New essays by Giampaolo Bianconi and Thea Liberty Nichols explore his nonconformist attitudes about masculinity and his intense response to the horrors of war—a recurring theme in Westermann’s sculpture following his return from service in the Korean War—as well as his experiments with wordplay, connection to conceptualism, and astonishing contributions to American art. An interview with artist Ed Ruscha, who knew and admired Westermann and his attention to craft, gives context to Westermann’s complex role as an unpretentious father figure to American conceptual and pop artists. H. C. Bankole-Bright and Politics in Colonial Sierra Leone, 1919–1958
This substantial and thoroughly documented book is a political biography of an important figure in Sierra Leone. It is also a comment on two of the major themes of the country’s history - the relations between the Colony (Krio society) and the Protectorate (the earlier inhabitants of the territory) and, more importantly, the position of the imperial regime vis-á-vis its colonial subjects. The author, a Sierra Leonean and a Krio himself, skilfully examines the country’s recent history through the life of Dr H. C. Bankole-Bright, an important leader of the Krio people. The Krio, descendants of the freed slaves, were the elite of Sierra Leone for more than a century, but ultimately they failed to master mass electorial politics during the period of decolonization leading to independence. Dr Bankole-Bright’s failure is seen as emblematic of the disappointed hopes of the Krio as a political group in Sierra Leone. An underlying theme of the book is the misrepresentation of the Krio people in Sierra Leone historiography.

H. C. for Life, That Is to Say . . . is Derrida's literary critical recollection of his lifelong friendship with Hélène Cixous. The main figure that informs Derrida's reading here is that of "taking sides." While Hélène Cixous in her life and work takes the side of life, "for life," Derrida admits always feeling drawn to the side of death. Rather than being an obvious choice, taking the side of life is an act of faith, by wagering one's life on life. H. C. for Life sets up and explores this interminable "argument" between Derrida and Cixous as to what death has in store deep within life itself, before the end. In addition to being a memoir, it is also a theoretical confrontation—for example about the meaning of "might" and "omnipotence," and a philosophical and philological analysis of the crypts within the vast oeuvre of Hélène Cixous. Finally, the book is Derrida's tribute to the thought of the woman whom he regards as one of the great French poets, writers, and thinkers of our time.
