The Kaleidoscopic Vision of Malcolm Lowry

The Kaleidoscopic Vision of Malcolm Lowry

Nigel H. Foxcroft

Lexington Books

The Kaleidoscopic Vision of Malcolm Lowry: Souls and Shamans is an interdisciplinary investigation of the kaleidoscopic vision of international modernist writer Malcolm Lowry through an analysis of his selected literary works and correspondence. Nigel Foxcroft examines Lowry’s sustained endeavors to attain psychoanalytical atonement with himself and his environment in Ultramarine, Swinging the Maelstrom, “The Forest Path to the Spring,” and October Ferry to Gabriola. This book also addresses the odyssey on which Lowry and his literary protagonists embark to exorcize souls from the past and gain a deeper insight into human nature in Dark as the Grave Wherein My Friend is Laid, La Mordida, and “Through the Panama.” Foxcroft analyzes how Lowry’s psychogeographic perception of the interconnectedness of East-West cultures and civilizations, along with the influence of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican customs, are necessary historical dimensions of his work. This book traces Lowry's intellectual efforts in pursuing philosophical and cosmic knowledge in order to bridge the gap between the rational natural sciences and instinctive humanities. Scholars of history, literature, Latin American studies, religion, and spirituality will find this book particularly useful.
The Amazon River Forest

The Amazon River Forest

Nigel J. H. Smith

sidottu
The floodplain forest of the Amazon is the last major agricultural frontier of the Americas. This unique habitat, inundated in some places to a depth of thirty feet a year, contains a marvellous variety of plant and animal resources that inhabitants have long reaped--fruit, nuts, building materials, fuelwood, and medicinal plants. While the floodplain has great potential for food production, its natural resource base is becoming increasingly threatened by ranching and agricultural expansion and impaired by inappropriate land-use practices. This important book, based both on field observations carried out over the past quarter century and historical material, demonstrates that knowledge possessed by area dwellers offers vital insights for promoting the sound economic development of the floodplain. Nigel Smith argues for the importance of balance between land-use systems, and suggests that research and development should be realigned to incorporate both modern science and traditional systems. Beautifully illustrated with the author's own photographs, this authoritative volume explores a broad range of ecological, historical, cultural, and socioeconomic issues, and offers practical suggestions for developing the floodplain that enhance, rather than destroy, biodiversity.

Nonparametric statistical methods minimize the number of assumptions that need to be made about the distribution of data being analysed, unlike classical parametric methods. As such, they are an essential part of a statistician’s armoury, and this book is an essential resource in their application. Starting from the basics of statistics, it takes the reader through the main nonparametric approaches with an emphasis on carefully explained examples backed up by use of the R programming language.Key features of this fully revised and extended fifth edition include the following:An introductory chapter that provides a gentle introduction to the basics of statistics, including types of data, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals and ethical issuesAn R package containing functions that have been written for the examples in the text and the exercisesSummary bullet points at the end of each section to enable the reader to locate important principles quicklyA case study from medical research to demonstrate nonparametric approaches to the data analysisExamples fully integrated into the text, drawn from published research on contemporary issues, with more detail given in their explanationExtensive exercises along with complete solutions that allow the reader to test their understanding of the materialArticles used in the examples and exercises carefully chosen to enable readers to identify up-to-date literature in their field for research, publications and teaching materialNumerous historical references throughout the text, from which to explore the origins of nonparametric methodsApplied Nonparametric Statistical Methods, Fifth Edition, is a comprehensive course text in nonparametric techniques suitable for undergraduate students of mathematics and statistics. It assumes only basic previous experience of statistics, and with algebra kept to a minimum, it is also ideal for quantitative methods modules delivered to undergraduate or postgraduate students in science, business and health service training. It is an invaluable resource for researchers, medical practitioners, business managers, research and development staff, and others needing to interpret quantitative information. Suitable for self-directed learning in continuing professional development, it also acts as a handy accessible reference manual.

Tropical Forests and Their Crops

Tropical Forests and Their Crops

Cornell University Press

pokkari
The tropics are the source of many of our familiar fruits, vegetables, oils, and spice, as well as such commodities as rubber and wood. Moreover, other tropical fruits and vegetables are being introduced into our markets to offer variety to our diet. Now, as tropical forests are increasingly threatened, we face a double-fold crisis: not only the loss of the plants but also rich pools of potentially useful genes. Wild populations of crop plants harbor genes that can improve the productivity and disease resistance of cultivated crops, many of which are vital to developing economies and to global commerce. Eight chapters of this book are devoted to a variety of tropical crops—beverages, fruit, starch, oil, resins, fuelwood, fodder, spices, timber, and nuts—the history of their domestication, their uses today, and the known extent of their gene pools, both domesticated and wild. Drawing on broad research, the authors also consider conservation strategies such as parks and reserves, corporate holdings, gene banks and tissue culture collections, and debt-for-nature swaps. They stress the need for a sensitive balance between conservation and the economic well-being of local populations. If economic growth is part of the conservation effort, local populations and governments will be more strongly motivated to save their natural resources. Distinctly practical and soundly informative, this book provides insight into the overwhelming abundance of tropical forests, an unsettling sense of what we may lose if they are destroyed, and a deep appreciation for the delicate relationships between tropical forest plants and people around the world.

Diagnostic radiology plays a vital role in patient management and all clinicians need to be able to recognize the radiological appearances of many medical conditions. Not only are traditional imaging techniques important, but newer techniques such as interventional radiology, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, and ultrasound are increasingly important in clinical practice. The interpretation of radiological images is also an integral part of professional examinations within general surgery. This book covers all modalities in radiology, providing a guide to the principles of plain radiographic film interpretation and an understanding of the roles and limitations of more complex imaging across general surgery. The use of contrast agents, radiation dosage, and guidance on the interpretation of some imaging modalities such as the chest and abdominal radiograph, intravenous urogram, and barium studies are included. The material is presented through the discussion of 101 fully-illustrated cases which take a question and full answer format.

Sufi Mystics of the Niger Desert

Sufi Mystics of the Niger Desert

H. T. Norris

Clarendon Press
1990
sidottu
This book is a study of the evidence that exists to this day in the Niger Republic, and in the adjacent regions of Saharan and non-Saharan Africa, about the life of Sidi Mahmud al-Baghdadi, who, it is believed, introduced new doctrines of Oriental Sufism into the Air Massif during the sixteenth century. The teachings of Sidi Mahmud were to reappear recently in the Khalwatiyya Sufi order ( tariqa) in Niger. They are still important for contemporary Islam in that republic which is a bridge between the Arab world and the Muslim states of the African Sahel. There is also evidence to suggest that initiated members of the Mahmudiyya Sufi order were once to be found throughout the entire Southern Sahara, from Timbuctoo to Borno and Lake Chad. This Sufi order was one of the earliest to be founded in the area of Aïr which was a crossroads of African trade and of rival empires and of conflicting tribes and peoples.
