For a very long time, Gullah people dwelling on the Sea Islands of Charleston, South Carolina went unknown and unnoticed. The little which was known did not paint them in a positive light. It resulted in questions and comments that were often disparaging rather than those that could enlighten. This caused many Gullah people to change or deny who they were and to abandon some of their cultural traditions and language after enduring years of enslavement and inequity. This book shows how the Gullah people maintained African history through their memory, knowledge and practice of customs and traditions from Africa. These traditions were passed down from one generation to the next, both intentionally and unintentionally. Through the research and work of several individuals and organizations, many people are now coming to understand and appreciate the history that they held onto for decades. This book is about my personal journey growing up Gullah and how I saw the world through my experience.

Aristotle is justly famed as the founder of literary criticism, but he was not its inventor: his approach was shaped, not only by the ideas newly current in the fourth century, but also by the literature, critical attitudes and language which he inherited. It is this inheritance which concerns the author of Poetry and Criticism Before Plato, first published in 1969: setting the words of poets and critics side by side. The relationship between the poets and the Muses, and Plato’s account of poetic inspiration and metaphorical language are both discussed. In the later chapters Professor Harriott traces the emergence of critical techniques and vocabulary as revealed in the writings of philosophers, sophists and dramatists. Finally, the two surviving passages of practical criticism are investigated: the literary contest between Aeschylus and Euripides in the Frogs of Aristophanes and Socrates’ exegesis of a poem by Simonides in Plato’s Protagoras.

Since 1900, the average life expectancy in the developed world has almost doubled, from 45 to 80. "We are almost a new species," declared the English writer V.S. Pritchett, while pointing out that this means "most of us have to face the prospect of a long old age before we die." Pritchett is one of five great writers--along with Stanley Kunitz, Doris Lessing, Mavis Gallant and Russell Baker--whose novels, short stories, poems and essays about old age, written in old age, are examined in this book. Born between 1900 (Pritchett) and 1925 (Baker), these writers are members of the first generation of the 20th century, and of the first generation of writers able to write about old age from experience. In their later works we read about growing old as reported by the old, not as imagined by the young and middle-aged. They wrote about old age not as a discrete stage of life, but as a continuation--another context in which to pursue the themes of their earlier poems, novels, stories and essays. And those who had written about love--a central theme of fiction and poetry--now wrote about love in old age.

Sam Shepard, Lanford Wilson, David Mamet, Charles Fuller, and Marsha Norman were born within ten years of one another. While they are not linked to a particular movement or school, they are fellow members of a generation of writers, one that has come to prominence during a turning point in American theater: From the midseventies to the late eighties, emphasis on the written word returned after a decade dominated by "nonverbal" theater that subordinated language to the visual.
