From the Rushdie affair and the Danish cartoon affair to the Charlie Hebdo massacre and draconian legislation against blasphemy worldwide, the tensions between free speech ideals and religious sensitivities have polarized global public opinion and the international community of states, triggering fierce political power struggles in the corridors of the UN. Inspired by theories of norm diffusion in International Relations, Skorini investigates how the struggle to define the limits of free speech vis-à-vis religion unfolds within the UN system. Revealing how human rights terminology is used and misused, the book also considers how the human rights vision paradoxically contains the potential to justify human rights violations in practice. In the summer of 1989 I went to visit my dear friend Ahmed in Syria. This is his story and the stories of so many other people I met... ...and then we move fast forward to present time. Today, the 26th of August 2016 - "Updates and Thoughts on my book about Syria": In 1990 I began writing my book about my personal experiences in Syria. I was still a very young man and memories from my time in Syria were crystal clear and still dripping from the excitement. After about 60 pages I ran out of steam and it wasn't until 20 years later that I decided to finish my book with all of its unusual stories.During the writing process, the uprising in Syria began in March 2011. I was conflicted by it and tried a few times to draw some parallels from the new escalating conflict to the stories in my book. But I soon realized that my book about Syria, which is very personal and at times extreme, had to be a periodic piece, an image of the moment with absolutely no references to the future or present times...But what my book does bring to readers who are more interested in the current events rather than the past, is an exclusive insight into the Syrian Arab mentality. A chance to understand why people in this region of the world are particularly addicted to vengeance and brutal violence, and why, perhaps, they have such a short sighted understanding of their own future.Though my book is a patchwork of imperfections and seemingly trifling details, it reflects, now more than ever, upon the clashes between civilizations. In my eager to create a universe of Horror and Slasher mixed with the wicked side of the human sexuality, I neglected to properly introduce the characters to the audience.It was action from the get-go, with little insight into the characters and their background stories. Therefore, when the slaughter and madness begins, the audience has no deep connection with any of the characters, making the movie, its story, much more difficult to swallow and cope.So when approaching the remake of SHREDDED, now named SHREDDED HALLOWEEN, I focused a lot of my efforts on introducing the main characters properly and portraying their personalities and background. This work has completely changed the story and the depth of it. I am confident that the audience now will feel a much stronger connection to its characters, hence making the new film much scarier than its older sibling.This is Horror at its finest. Das scheint einem elementaren Wesenszug menschlicher Forschung überhaupt zu entsprechen. Noch bevor wir die höchsten Gebirge und die tiefsten Tiefen unseres Planeten, das Innerste von Kontinenten und Inseln (z. B. Brasilien, Neuguinea) oder die Pole einigermaßen kennengelernt haben, werden schon Vorstöße in den Weltraum und auf andere Planeten unternommen, und zwar mit gewaltigem Aufwand. Beschämend einfache Fragen der Primitiv-Zoologie unserer Erde sind hingegen heute noch unbeantwortet. So ist z. B. das Breitmaul-Nashorn (Ceratotherium simum) noch in keinem Zoo der Welt gezüchtet worden; dabei handelt es sich um eines der allergrößten Landtiere unserer Erde. Wir wissen heute noch nicht, ob es mit anderen Nashorn-Arten bastardiert werden kann, ob afrikanischer und indi scher Elefant, Gorilla und Schimpanse sich bastardieren lassen, ob die Giraffe schwimmen kann usw. Wenige Menschen haben eine Ahnung davon, daß der Blauwal (BaZaenoptera muscuZus) mit seinen 30 m Körperlänge und 120 Tonnen Gewicht der größte Zeitgenosse auf unserem Erdball ist - dreißig bis vierzig mal die Masse eines Elefanten - und gleichzeitig das größte Geschöpf, das jemals unseren Planeten bewohnt hat. Viel mehr Beachtung findet die Frage nach den Lebewesen auf anderen Himmelskörpern. Das ist symptomatisch für den Menschen und die von ihm betriebene Forschung.
Retten til at tænke og tale frit om religiøse forhold er en konstant kilde til konflikter og magtkampe i international politik og i FN-systemet, hvor menneskerettighedernes indhold og betydning altid er til forhandling. Den historie kaster Kampen om ytringsfriheden lys over. Mandag den 30. november i 2009 udgår en mail fra det amerikanske udenrigsministerium til en række udvalgte amerikanske ambassader over hele kloden. Mailen handler om, at ytringsfriheden er under pres i FN-systemet. At retten til at kommunikere frit om religiøse anliggender er truet af visse muslimske stater, som forsøger at indføre et nyt, globalt forbud imod blasfemiske eller ”religionskrænkende” ytringer. Instruksen er, at disse bestræbelser skal stoppes. Og de skal stoppes nu. Mailen fra Washington er begyndelsen på en hæsblæsende politisk magtkamp i det diplomatiske maskineri i FN-systemet. Endnu et kapitel i en global værdikamp, som dybest set handler om ytringsfrihedens grænser og religionens rolle i det 21. århundrede. En konflikt, som hvert år udkæmpes af stater og statslige diplomater, og som bliver stadig mere aktuel i en digital tidsalder. Men spændingerne mellem religion, blasfemi og ytringsfrihed har været en del af FN’s historie helt fra begyndelsen. Gennem nye data, historisk arkivmateriale, feltarbejde og interviews med centrale diplomater fra hele verden giver denne bog et nyt og anderledes indblik i, hvordan retten til at kommunikere frit om religiøse forhold har været en konstant kilde til konflikter i international politik og i FN-systemet. Og bogen viser, at udfaldet af den globale værdikamp har konsekvenser for virkelige mennesker derude i den virkelige verden.
