Understanding Stuart Hall

Understanding Stuart Hall

'This is the most lucid and engaged account of Stuart Hall's work. Meticulously, and with an exemplary generosity, Helen Davis patiently unravels the threads of Hall's intellectual history. The result is a most useful and thoughtful book, which could prove to be indispensable for students of cultural studies' - Graeme Turner, University of Queensland Understanding Stuart Hall traces the development of one of the most influential and respected figures within cultural studies. Focusing on Stuart Hall's writings over a period of nearly fifty years, this volume offers students and academics a cogent and exploratory route through complex and overlapping areas of analysis. In her critical assessment of Hall's most important contributions to academic and public debate, Davis shows the extent to which his analyses of race and ethnicity have been informed by early studies of Marxism, class and 'societies structured in dominance'. Davis offers fresh insight into the formation of one of the most prolific, charismatic and controversial intellectuals of his generation. Despite having been branded a 'cultural pessimist', Stuart Hall has long been associated with encouraging new, cutting-edge scholarship within the field. This volume concludes with a discussion of Hall's most recent political and academic interventions and his continuing commitment to innovation within the visual arts.
Gender, Society and Print Culture in Late-Stuart England

Gender, Society and Print Culture in Late-Stuart England

Helen Berry

Ashgate Publishing Limited

Focusing on a largely unknown type of popular print culture that developed in the late 1600s-the coffee house periodical-Helen Berry here offers new evidence that the politics of gender, far from being a marginal or frivolous topic, was an issue of general interest and wide-spread concern to the early modern reader. Berry's study provides the first full length analysis of John Dunton's Athenian Mercury (1691-97), an influential specimen of the coffee-house periodical genre, as well as the original question-and-answer publication which addressed both men's and women's issues in one journal. As the chapter headings in this book indicate, the topics addressed in the "agony column" of the Athenian Mercury-for example, the body, courtship, and sex-are of enduring interest across the centuries. Berry's study of this periodical provides new insights into the gendered ideas and debates that circulated among middling sorts in early modern England. An historical survey of the social effects of mass communication in the early modern period, this volume makes an important contribution to the ongoing study of how gendered ideas and values were communicated culturally, particularly beyond the milieu of elite groups such as the nobility and gentry. It argues that the mass media was from its infancy an important means of communicating powerful messages about gender norms, particularly among the middling sorts. The study will appeal not only to historians, women and gender studies scholars and literature scholars, but also to scholars of publishing history.

The international quest for an English-medium education can cause anxieties about achievement through English, the second language for many students, as well as about the maintenance of first languages. This ground-breaking book can help schools internationally to turn the demand for English into an opportunity for bilingualism. Cambridge International Examinations shares its programme of research to reveal the hidden richness of bilingualism in schools and emerging practices of bilingual education. The research has led to practical initiatives, including a bilingual survey tool which is shared in the book for schools to consider as a means of self-analysis.
Deall yr Holocost yn ystod CA3: Sut digwyddodd a pham? (Understanding the Holocaust at KS3: How and why did it happen? Welsh-language edition)
In 2016 the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education published a landmark study, What do students know and understand about the Holocaust? Almost 10,000 students aged 11 to 18 participated in the research. It was the largest of its kind anywhere in the world. The study indicated that the vast majority of young people found the subject interesting and relevant. However, it also revealed that many students did not have clear knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust.Written in direct response to the findings of the 2016 national study, this textbook significantly improves understanding of the Holocaust by:> Providing you with an appropriate historical overview of key aspects of the Holocaust> Helping you to understand the long-standing hatred of Jews (i.e., the roots of antisemitism)> Deepening your knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust> Encouraging you to challenge common myths and misconceptions (e.g., that Hitler was solely responsible for the Holocaust)> Developing your understanding of key historical concepts (e.g., evidence, interpretation, causation, significance)> Enabling you to answer the big historical question: How and why did the Holocaust happen?> Helping you to appreciate the impact of the Holocaust on ordinary people across Europe> Inviting you to consider the importance of the Holocaust and its significance todayThis textbook is supported by additional materials and teacher guidance notes on the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education website (holocausteducation.org.uk).The original design, development and distribution of this textbook was funded by the Toni Schiff Memorial Fund and the Pears Foundation. This new Blackstone's Guide provides the complete text of the Companies Act 2006, together with a clear explanation of the legislation and its impact. The Companies Act is a major piece of legislation - comprising 1300 sections and 16 schedules. It represents an attempt to reform company law for the 21st century in accordance with the Government's stated objectives of encouraging small companies, promoting shareholder involvement and fostering a long term investment culture. It puts whole areas of company law which are the product of the common law such as directors' duties and derivative actions on a statutory basis for the first time, and implements EU Directives on Takeovers and Transparency Obligations. The 2006 Act almost completely consolidates companies legislation in one place with only a few minor provisions remaining in the 1985 Act. This Guide provides a clear analysis of the new legislation, explaining both its genesis and likely effect. The authors adopt a topic-based approach, focussing on the most important changes and developments for both private and public companies. The Blackstone's Guide Series delivers concise and accessible books covering the latest legislative changes and amendments. Published soon after enactment, they offer timely and expert commentary on the meaning and effects of the legislation, plus a copy of the Act itself. The Guides are a cost-effective solution to key information needs and are the perfect companion for any practitioner needing to get up to speed with the latest changes.

'The thrill is that you're actually figuring it out on your own. You're engaging with another language, not just parroting it... It's an excellent way to start, and leaves the listener thinking, Hey, Ich kann do dis.' - New Yorker, David Sedaris, humorist and author, on learning German with the Michel Thomas MethodLooking for a convenient language course that fits your lifestyle and gets you speaking a new language in a matter of weeks, not years? The original no-books, no-homework, no-memorizing method is in tune with the way the brain prefers to receive, store and retrieve information. You'll stick with it because you'll love it. * Pick up Japanese naturally and unforgettably without strain or stress* Learn from listening and speaking, without the pressure of writing or memorizing* Build up your Japanese in manageable steps by thinking out answers for yourself* Progress to the full Foundation Japanese course with confidence in the method.WHY IS THE METHOD SO SUCCESSFUL?'What you understand, you know; and what you know, you don't forget.' - Michel Thomas Before there was machine learning, there was Michel Thomas. For over 50 years he worked on decoding languages by breaking them down into their most essential component parts. These 'building blocks' are introduced to the learner sequentially in such a way that you reconstruct the language for yourself - to form your own sentences, to say what you want, when you want. This unique method draws on the principles of instructional psychology and works with the way your brain prefers to receive, store and retrieve information. Knowledge is structured and organized so that you absorb the language easily and don't forget it. The method is designed to eliminate the stress which prevents you from relaxing and allowing the brain to work in the way which accepts learning in a seemingly painless, very exciting and highly motivating way.HOW DO THE COURSES WORK?'All stress inhibits true and effective learning' - Michel Thomas During the course, you will join Michel Thomas Method Teachers Helen Gilhooly and Niamh Kelly, and two students in a live lesson, learning from both their successes and their mistakes to keep you motivated and involved throughout the course. You, as the learner, become the third student and participate actively in the class. Within the very first hour you will be able to construct simple phrases by listening and thinking out answers for yourself without the pressure of writing or stress of having to memorize. You will learn at your own pace, pausing and repeating where necessary, and complete the course in about 3-5 hours. WHAT WILL I ACTUALLY ACHIEVE?'I am the architect who builds the house. It's up to you to decorate it.' - Michel Thomas The Michel Thomas Method will help you kick-start, continue, and flourish in your Japanese language learning journey. It is not intended to get you perfectly fluent, but it will get you speaking and using Japanese, with proper pronunciation, faster than most any other method. It is designed to give you a strong foundation and good working knowledge of a language from which you can expand and later 'add decoration' to. It is a rapid method for learning, but still requires effort and concentration on the part of the learner. WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE COURSE?* Start Japanese includes one audio CD. The booklet is available to download from www.michelthomas.com.LEARN ANYWHERE AND ANYTIME! Reclaim your pockets of free time to learn a new language! Don't be tied to chunky books or your computer, Michel Thomas Method audio courses let you learn whenever and wherever you want, in as little or as much time as you have. WHERE DO I GO NEXT? Foundation Japanese follows on from the Start course.
