The novel tells of a search of an unexplored region of Africa by a group of adventurers led by Allan Quatermain for the missing brother of one of the party. The men find danger, hardship, myth, lost tribes, cruel kings, and evil sorceress, and overcome all. Through a series of adventures the men escape near-certain death, with pocketfuls of diamonds from "King Solomon's Mines", enough to make them rich for life. It is the first English adventure novel set in Africa, and is considered to be the genesis of the Lost World literary genre.

L'id e d'un doute ne me serait pas venue sans un petit incident tout r cent, dont je vous fais juge. J'avais eu la simplicit d'envoyer mes preuves mon fils Harry. Lui, sans m'avertir, n'eut rien de si press que de les passer un certain Jones, r dacteur distingu , para t-il, d'un journal destin aux jeunes gar ons. Cet illustre personnage jugea propos de faire de cet ouvrage une critique blessante, et Harry tout fier de la condescendance de l'homme c l bre, m'envoya cette critique. M. Jones, qui ignore comment j'ai recueilli les documents de mon r cit, s'exprime ainsi: L'id e de votre ami n'est pas mauvaise; on aurait pu cependant en tirer un meilleur parti. Le style non plus n'est pas fameux, et il me semble que, pour se permettre un ouvrage d'imagination pareil, il aurait t bon que l' crivain poss d t, en quelque mesure au moins, des connaissances exactes sur les indig nes et les coutumes qu'il d crit. Remarquez, je vous prie, que me jugeant par lui-m me, sans doute, M. Jones me prend pour un de ses rivaux, c'est- -dire un compilateur de mensonges litt raires, et il insinue que mon histoire de la D couverte des mines du roi Salomon est un fruit de mon imagination. Bien plus, selon lui, moi, le chasseur Quatermain, qui, pendant quarante ans, ai v cu, travaill aux mines, chass les fauves dans le sud de l'Afrique, je ne connais pas les indig nes et leurs coutumes Cela suffit, et je n'ajoute rien, sinon que, malgr mon m chant style, la lettre se terminait par une offre de neuf francs cinquante centimes par page si je veux lui fournir des articles analogues pour son journal. Biographie Henry Rider Haggard est n Bradenham, dans le Norfolk, de William Meybohm Rider Haggard, un avocat et d'Ella Doveton, auteur et po te, ni ce du g n ral John Doveton. Depuis des si cles les membres de la famille de sa m re, tablis Saint-H l ne, servaient aux Indes comme officiers sup rieurs. Haggard avait une certaine exp rience personnelle de ces pays exotiques gr ce ses nombreux voyages. Il tait notamment all en 1875 dans le Natal (aujourd'hui une province de l'Afrique du Sud) comme secr taire du gouverneur colonial, Henry Bulwer-Lytton, fr re d'Edward Bulwer-Lytton, occultiste et romancier illustre. En cette qualit , Haggard tait pr sent Pretoria en 1877 lors de l'annonce officielle de l'annexion de la r publique des Boers, qui devait d clencher la Premi re Guerre des Boers. En 1878, Haggard fut nomm greffier de la Haute Cour du Transvaal, r gion qui devait galement tre incorpor e l'Afrique du Sud. Il revint ensuite en Angleterre pour se marier et emmener son pouse, Mariana Louisa Margitson, avec lui en Afrique. Le couple revint ensuite en Angleterre en 1882 et s'installa d'abord Ditchingham, Norfolk, puis Kessingland. Haggard entreprit l' tude du droit et s'inscrivit au barreau en 1884. Henry Rider Haggard was born at Bradenham, Norfolk, to Sir William Meybohm Rider Haggard, a barrister, and Ella Doveton, an author and poet. He was the eighth of ten children. He was initially sent to Garsington Rectory in Oxfordshire to study under the Reverend H.J. Graham but, unlike his older brothers who graduated from various Public Schools, he ended up attending Ipswich Grammar School. This was because his father, who regarded him as somebody who was not going to amount to much, could no longer afford to maintain his expensive private education. After failing his army entrance exam he was sent to a private 'crammer' in London to prepare for the entrance exam for the British Foreign Office, which in the end he never sat. Instead Haggard's father sent him to Africa in an unpaid position as assistant to the secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor of Natal, Sir Henry Bulwer.
The story is set in the Ptolemaic era of Ancient Egyptian history and revolves around the survival of a dynasty bloodline protected by the Priesthood of Isis. The main character Harmachis (the living descendant of the pharaoh's bloodline) is charged by the Priesthood to overthrow the supposed impostor Cleopatra, drive out the Greeks and Romans and restore Egypt to its golden era.

A young Cambridge University professor, Horace Holly, is visited by a colleague, Vincey, who reveals that he will soon die. Vincey proceeds to tell Holly a fantastical tale of his family heritage. He charges Holly with the task of raising his young son, Leo (whom he has never seen) and gives Holly a locked iron box, with instructions that it is not to be opened until Leo turns 25. Holly agrees, and indeed Vincey is found dead the next day. Holly raises the boy as his own; when the box is opened on Leo's 25th birthday they discover the ancient and mysterious "Sherd of Amenartas", which seems to corroborate Leo's father's story. Holly, Leo and their servant, Job, follow instructions on the Sherd and travel to eastern Africa but are shipwrecked. They alone survive, together with their Arab captain, Mahomed; after a perilous journey into an uncharted region of the African interior, they are captured by the savage Amahagger people.
Ayesha, the Return of She is a gothic-fantasy novel by the popular Victorian author H. Rider Haggard, published in 1905, as a sequel to his far more popular and well known novel, She. In the book's prologue, the book's anonymous "Editor" receives a parcel. Opening it, he finds a letter from Horace Holly, with an enclosed manuscript containing a second memoir about She. There is also a second letter, from Holly's doctor, to whom Holly has entrusted his letter and manuscript, along with a wooden box, which contains an ancient sistrum. The doctor recounts how, when attending Holly in his last hours, he arrived at the house to find that Holly had risen from his deathbed and made his way to a local ring of ancient standing stones. Following him, the doctor glimpsed a manifestation that appears to Holly, but as the vision vanished, Holly had let out a happy cry and died.
