A History of Technoscience

Are science and technology independent of one another? Is technology dependent upon science, and if so, how is it dependent? Is science dependent upon technology, and if so how is it dependent? Or, are science and technology becoming so interdependent that the line dividing them has become totally erased? This book charts the history of technoscience from the late nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century and shows how the military–industrial–academic complex and big science combined to create new examples of technoscience in such areas as the nuclear arms race, the space race, the digital age, and the new worlds of nanotechnology and biotechnology.

Chanel: A Fashionable History

Chanel: A Fashionable History

Jean Leymarie

Abrams Books
2011
sidottu
A lavish, full-color celebration of the history of the esteemed fashion couturier Chanel and the brand that lives on in her name. When Jean Leymarie's monograph on Coco Chanel was originally published in 1989, he was known primarily as a curator and modern art historian, both in his native France and abroad. Bringing his expertise to bear on one of the most famous (and often controversial) couturiers of all time, Leymarie legitimized fashion as fine art. Completely redesigned by Philippe Apeloig, Leymarie's classic volume belongs on the shelf of every Chanel fan. Beginning with a brief history of fashion, Leymarie takes the reader through Chanel's early days, when she mingled with Jean Cocteau, Igor Stravinsky, and Luchino Visconti, through the development of her brand after her death by Karl Lagerfeld. A special essay on Lagerfeld's contribution to the Chanel legacy, written by journalist Marc Lembron, brings this new edition up to date. Includes Color Photographs

The Chancellor's Mansion: A Renovation Story of Family, Home, History, and Mystery
The breathtaking story of one family's journey to restore, renovate, and preserve a historic mansion. It's a million-dollar project with gorgeous potential--and many challenges. THE CHANCELLOR'S MANSION was built by William Townsend McCoun, a public servant and abolitionist in New York City. The once-grand house on a hill in Oyster Bay, Long Island, had been abandoned for years. Many would have torn the property down and built something new on the land. But Jamie and Frantz Arty realized the house had more to give. The couple purchased the home, moved in, and began period-specific renovations at the height of the pandemic, with their parents and three young children in tow. The Artys were determined to see their dream project come to life, in spite of its challenges: a tree growing through the living room floor, a roof on the verge of collapse, and a snapping turtle stuck in a stone-lined hole on the grounds. And those were the easy fixes. While renovating, Jamie learned that the chancellor had a Black servant by the name of Sophia Moore. Her headstone reads: Born a slave in the state of New Jersey, bought her Freedom and for 25 years was a faithful friend and servant to the family of William Townsend McCoun. She is buried alongside the chancellor and his family --unusual for the time. The Chancellor's Mansion is not only an incredible historical play-by-play but a story of a house, the many families who have occupied it, and what it means to create a home.

The story of two Manx families united in Melbourne, Australia as a result of the 'Netherby' shipwreck. The Cubbin family, born on the Isle of Man, embarked for Brisbane, Australia on the sailing ship Netherby in April 1866. On July 16th 1866, their daughter Netherby (Nettie) was born in the midst of a shipwreck on an uninhabited beach of King Island; in the depths of a bleak winter with few dry clothes and little food. Having survived the ordeal, the Cubbin family decided to settle in Melbourne. James Cannell, another Manxman, grew up in a family of fishermen. He loved the sea and the Isle of Man and became an exceptional fisherman and sailor. Sadly however, at a young age, he lost his father to the sea, and his mother soon afterwards. New sailing ships beckoned so he left his beloved Isle in 1888 to sail the world. The port of Melbourne caught his fancy. He decided to stay and see what it had to offer ...well, Nettie Cubbin was on offer, so he married Nettie in 1891 and swapped the tall masts of his ships for five floors of stairs, as caretaker in Winfield House, Collins Street Melbourne. These were interesting, exceptional people who accepted events as they presented and lived long, fulfilling lives. They are worth knowing about and honouring. Joyce Hammond (n e Cannell), Nettie's grand-daughter, also accepted life as it presented. With little formal education she became a published author of fiction and history. Her story about her Manx heritage is full of wonderful snippets of intriguing information, not only about Nettie, her family, the Netherby shipwreck and her husband's family, but also about the Isle of Man. Joyce's fascinating story, together with family photographs, is now available as Cradled by Man: A family history by Joyce Hammond (n e Cannell), a book edited and published in 2016 by her daughter Jennifer Cover (Nettie's great-granddaughter).
