The Baroque was the first truly global culture. The Ibero-American Baroque illuminates its dissemination, dynamism, and transformation during the early modern period on both sides of the Atlantic. This collection of original essays focuses on the media, institutions, and technologies that were central to cultural exchanges in a broad early modern Iberian world, brought into being in the aftermath of the Spanish and Portuguese arrivals in the Americas. Focusing on the period from 1600 to 1825, these essays explore early modern Iberian architecture, painting, sculpture, music, sermons, reliquaries, processions, emblems, and dreams, shedding light on the Baroque as a historical moment of far-reaching and long-lasting importance. Anchored in extensive, empirical research that provides evidence for understanding how the Baroque became globalized, The Ibero-American Baroque showcases the ways in which the Baroque has continued to define Latin American identities in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

An Ibero-American Perspective on Narratives of Pandemics
An Ibero-American Perspective on Narratives of Pandemics is a critique of the realities of the pandemic in the Ibero-American world and its intertwined relationship with the environment. Through a critical gaze into the history of the region as it has evolved through periods of socio-environmental and cultural conflicts, the book chronicles multiple experiences of how people managed to negotiate multiple crises on a daily basis by often clinging to their age old cultural and healing practices, as well as the humanistic representation of such experiences in various fictional and nonfictional writings. The contributors expose the biopolitics around COVID-19 and its effects particularly on marginalised populations and the environment in an effort to consider the complexity of the pandemic in its multiple dimensions. They evaluate it through climatic, socioeconomic, political, scientific, and cultural lenses that they argue shaped the realities of the pandemic. They also take a close look at the use and effects of language in virtual spaces, implying it has the ability to construct/mis-construct reality in this postmodern world, arguing there is a need for a new environmental ethic post-pandemic.
Exploring Ibero-American Youth Cultures in the 21st Century
The authors collected here address youth street cultures in different cities from the Ibero-American world, bringing together contributions on Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Portugal, Spain, and beyond. This overseas approach bridging the European and American contexts is justified by the range of (complex) social, cultural and economic relationships that have shaped this transnational geographical space since the beginning of the colonial period. The chapters collected here focus on three key concepts—creativity, resistance and transgression—that form a threefold dispositive to locally and globally confront, contest and even fight against the hegemonic, punitive and oppressive powers (re)produced by (white, male) dominant classes of the city. The book ensures a high diversity of geographical and social/cultural research contexts by focusing on one, two or multiple spatial contexts (the public space, the street, the city) and, at the same time, by emphasizing the different economic, social, cultural, symbolic specificities of youth cultures (including gender, sexuality and race) in their particular urban contexts.

This spectacular volume, co-published with the Centro Botín, collects the works shown in the Picasso Ibero exhibition, where the relationship of the genius from Malaga to Iberian art is analyzed. The artist probably came into contact with the Iberian universe when he was still living between Madrid and Barcelona, but it was during his visits to the Louvre Museum in Paris that this encounter came to life. The book splendidly shows this fertile relationship, comparing works by Picasso with Iberian pieces from the Louvre and the main Spanish archaeological museums, to form an intense and beautiful artistic dialogue.
Cultural Policy in Ibero-America

Music in Ibero-America to 1850

Music in Ibero-America to 1850

When Latin Americans think of high art they do so primarily in terms of literature and the visual arts. In addition, the study of the first three centuries has until recently taken the back seat in the standard literature dealing with the music of that part of the world. This trend must be reversed for the lands south of the border to arrive at a broader understanding of their place in the world culture. This book attempts to redress the situation by providing the curious layman and the serious researcher with the tools to further clarify the role of cultivated music in the early life of the Ibero-American countries. It surveys the available historical data on personalities, events, and institutions that shaped the history of art music in Ibero-America (that is, its Spanish-speaking countries and Brazil) between the arrival of the Europeans in 1492 and 1850. This study of Music and Music Activities in Ibero-America to 1850 emphasizes historical data rather than musical analysis. Folk and popular music are mentioned only to the extent that they have affected the cultivated strains of Ibero-American music. Of interest to music historians and students of Ibero-American culture.
