Pioneers of the Caribbean invites readers to share the journey of two modern pioneers from the Caribbean Dolvis and Veronica. The story takes you on their voyage to the land of opportunities and their vision of goals and dreams for their family. The backdrop and reason for their flight for a better life are the political and economic struggles of black women and their families trying to move through the class and colour biases of 1950 island life. Their triumphs and disappointments are relived through the eyes of their daughters Ingrid and Patricia. It is a story of transformation, overcoming challenges and achieving success in areas sought and in other more complex areas not thought of. You are invited to journey with them to share and experience and also relive your life's journey and expectations, as it is only through sharing and experiencing and relating to others, do we gain a fuller understanding of who we are, where we came from and where we need to go to make each other whole....

On February 9, 2020 in Mexico City, a 25-year-old woman named Ingrid E. V was murdered by her companion. Grisly photographs of this femicide committed by Erik Francisco Robledo Rosas, taken at the scene of the crime by the authorities, were avidly circulated by Mexican tabloids, which had no qualms in plastering the young woman’s dismembered body across their front pages. This opportunistic move by the gutter press, and the complicity of the police in making it possible, sparked a wave of protests. Spurred by a tweet to do their part in ridding the internet of these gruesome images, social media users around the world posted numerous photos of peaceful lakes, sunsets, fields of flowers and other scenes of natural beauty under the hashtag #IngridEscamillaVargas. Moved by this collaborative effort, Zoé Aubry, who has been working on the systemic and structural phenomenon of femicides and the issues raised by their media coverage since 2017, has produced a book that pays homage to the memory of Ingrid Escamilla Vargas, denounces violence against women, and assails the voyeurism of a certain segment of the press.

Mannen hon aldrig mött men ändå känner igen.

Internationally renowned actress Ingrid Bergman was of Swedish and German descent, though she was known by the majority as Swedish. Three times an Oscar recipient, especially known for Casablanca, Murder on the Orient Express, Gaslight, Notorious, and Anastasia, she is considered one of the greatest actresses of all time. Though she hailed from Europe, she also had relatives in the United States. Ingrid kept in close contact with her aunt Blenda, her father’s sister, as well as Blenda’s son Carl and grandson Norman. Ingrid and Norman exchanged letters and met in different locations throughout the USA, France, and England. This book chronicles her relationship with her American relatives through original letters and recollections of Ingrid’s American cousin Norman.

Smit studies the woman behind the public image as a natural, wholesome, even saintly person, an image carefully crafted by Bergman's first producer David O. Selznick. Bergman hid behind that image to live her life on her own terms. That life included three difficult marriages, numerous lovers, and a major scandal that stained her reputation but which she survived by creating her own legend. Bergman was filled with contradictions: she was dependent upon men and chafed under their control; she loved her children but constantly left them to perform; she longed for romance but walked away from her affairs without looking back; she desired to make great films but settled for being an entertainer; she hated the scrutiny of the media but learned to charm reporters. The author also assesses Bergman's artistry--her star qualities and her acting skills. She did her best work in Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious, Roberto Rossellini's Voyage in Italy, and Ingmar Bergman's Autumn Sonata. Her life and image were the inspiration for these films in the first place.

Nelson Mandela brought the poetry of Ingrid Jonker to the attention of South Africa and the wider world when he read her poem "Die kind" (The Child) at the opening of South Africa's first democratic parliament on May 24, 1994. Though Jonker was already a significant figure in South African literary circles, Mandela's reference contributed to a revival of interest in Jonker and her work that continues to this day. Viljoen's biography illuminates the brief and dramatic life of Jonker, who created a literary oeuvre—as searing in its intensity as it is brief—before taking her own life at the age of thirty-one. Jonker wrote against a background of escalating apartheid laws, violent repression of black political activists, and the banning of the African National Congress and the Pan Africanist Congress. Viljoen tells the story of Ingrid Jonker in the political and cultural context of her time, provides sensitive insights into her poetry, and considers the reasons for the enduring fascination with her life and death. Her writings, her association with bohemian literary circles, and her identification with the oppressed brought her into conflict with her father, a politician in the white ruling party, and with other authority figures from her Afrikaner background. Her life and work demonstrate the difficulty and importance of artistic endeavor in a place of terrible conflict.

A novel about the life of German cabaret singer and film actress Ingrid Caven, who was once director Rainer Werner Fassbinder's star, and his wife, muse to Yves Saint Laurent, and a protege of Pierre Berge. Consisting of memories, mixing real and invented people and events, Ingrid Caven reveals the cold heart of the European counterculture of the 1970s, an era of celebrity glitz, cocaine-fueled excess, gay bathhouses, and young idealists-turned-terrorists. Ingrid Caven was an immediate bestseller in France, where it sold over 235,000 copies in its first year of publication. It has been translated into 18 languages. Jean-Jacques Schuhl is a Parisian dandy who lives with Ingrid Caven and who had not published a book for twenty years until this one.
