Roswitha Hecke’s photo book Liebes Leben (Love Life) about the Zurich artist-muse and prostitute, Irene, also called “Lady Shiva,” was published for the first time in 1978. It became both a cult book and an international success. Reprinted many times and translated into several languages, it is finally available again. The new, revised volume put out by Edition Patrick Frey presents photos that have never before been published. It is through the director Werner Schroeter that Roswitha Hecke met Irene. Irene, a secret star of Zurich’s Bohème at that time, worked as a prostitute until her tragic accidental death. For three weeks Hecke photographed her daily routine in Zurich and accompanied her to Rome where Irene always celebrated her birthday. The result was a subtle and strong portrait of a woman, both beautiful and confident, with an unrivaled eroticism and proud elegance. The photos, a mix of choreographed and documentary work, capture an unusual immediacy and presence. “Irene wanted to be pretty, to be a woman, to be free. She was direct and moody, like a child. She loved a flirt more than marriage. Tension more than harmony. Longing more than satisfaction. And distance more than contact. She lived her life according to this, come what may. ” (Roswitha Hecke)

Artist Irene Rice Pereira was a significant figure in the New York art world of the 1930s and 1940s, who shared an interest in Jungianism with the better-known Abstract Expressionists and with various women artists and writers seeking "archetypal" imagery. Yet her artistic philosophy and innovative imagery elude easy classification with her artistic contemporaries. In consequence, her work is rarely included in studies of the period and is almost unknown to the general public. This first intellectual history of the artist and her work seeks to change that.Karen A. Bearor thoroughly re-creates the artistic and philosophical milieu that nourished Pereira’s work. She examines the options available to Pereira as a woman artist in the first half of the twentieth century and explores how she used those options to contribute to the development of modernism in the United States. Bearor traces Pereira’s interest in the ideas of major thinkers of the period-among them, Spengler, Jung, Einstein, Cassirer, and Dewey-and shows how Pereira incorporated their ideas into her art. And she demonstrates how Pereira’s quest to understand something of the nature of ultimate reality led her from an early utopianism to a later interest in spiritualism and the occult. This lively intellectual history amplifies our knowledge of a time of creative ferment in American art and society. It will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in the modernist period.

Often called the First Lady of Hollywood, Irene Dunne, in a long and distinguished screen career, juggled comedies, dramas, and musicals with aplomb, and all three genres were represented in her five Academy Award nominations. Her television career was equally successful, including appearances as host or guest on numerous comedies, dramas, and variety shows. Active in many civic and philanthropic causes, she also served as an alternate delegate to the United Nations. All aspects of her career are documented in this first in-depth study of her work, including much information never previously chronicled. The opening biographical overview features reminiscences from colleagues such as James Stewart and Ralph Bellamy. Dunne's multiple careers on stage and in motion pictures, radio, and television are fully detailed in separate chapters, as are her recordings, song sheets, and numerous awards and nominations. An annotated bibliography records the diverse writings by and about her, and a list of magazine covers featuring Dunne over a period of twenty years is appended. All sections are fully cross-referenced and indexed. Photographs are also included--ranging from her childhood to her last public appearance as a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 1985. A worthy tribute to this talented and beloved actress, this book will be an important source for research on Irene Dunne and her world.

Irene Emily Louise Morris was born in Southwark, London, on 8 October 1920, the youngest of five children born to Arthur and Florence. Her early life is largely a mystery as she rarely spoke of her childhood, nor of her experiences during the Second World War. It is only through the memoirs of her husband, Eric Mutton, that we have any written record at all. After the war, tragedy struck on more than one occasion and led to the decision to emigrate in 1958. Leaving England to raise their family in Tasmania proved rewarding. Despite more difficulties along the way, life was much improved and certainly more peaceful. This slim volume is a tribute to 'Rene', our Mum, and to commemorate the 100th year of her birth.
