Canon Law and the Letters of Ivo of Chartres

Canon Law and the Letters of Ivo of Chartres

Christof Rolker

Ivo of Chartres was one of the most learned scholars of his time, a powerful bishop and a major figure in the so-called 'Investiture Contest'. Christof Rolker here offers a major new study of Ivo, his works and the role he played in the intellectual, religious and political culture of medieval Europe around 1100 AD. Comparing Ivo's extensive correspondence to the contemporary canon law collections attributed to him, Dr Rolker provides a new interpretation of their authorship. Contrary to current assumptions, he reveals that Ivo did not compile the Panormia, showing that its compiler worked in a distinctly different mental framework from Ivo. These findings call for a reassessment of the relationship between Church reform and scholasticism and shed new light on Ivo as both a scholar and bishop.

Plastic surgery, a 1950s curiosity, today is an obsession. How was it transformed? Who triggered its mania? Can it return to its roots: treating the disfigured and burned? Brazil's Ivo Pitanguy led plastic surgery from obscurity and ridicule to prominence and praise. He created its first dedicated hospital, founded by far its largest postgraduate school and charity, invented key operations for the head and body, and made Rio de Janeiro the planet's beauty surgery capital. The press reported his operations on Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Persian Empress Farah Diba, French president Fran ois Mitterrand, and Frank Sinatra. A jet-setting Renaissance man who speaks six languages, Ivo has been friends with Salvador Dal , Audrey Hepburn, and Michael Caine. He built a fantasy lifestyle---circulating among a Rio mansion, a private Brazilian island, the Gstaad slopes, and Paris salons. His expansive media exposure provoked a backlash that reverberated for a decade. Yet afterward he emerged as one of the profession's most admired senior statesmen. Pitanguy regrets the overuse of cosmetic surgery, counsels how to avoid mishaps, and cheers the incredible reconstructive breakthroughs in the offing.

"ST. IVO is absolutely exquisite and perfect for poolside... M]asterfully written and immediately captivating." - Elin Hildebrand, on Instagram"Hershon maintains a quiet terror throughout this slim, eccentric novel. . . Fiction full of complexity, devoted to reality. And in the end, a larger sense of purpose crashes down in a satisfying burst."--Danya Kukafka, The New York Times Book Review Over the course of a weekend, two couples reckon with the long-hidden secrets that have shaped their families, in a charged, poignant novel of motherhood and friendship It's the end of summer when we meet Sarah, the end of summer and the middle of her life, the middle of her career (she hopes it's not the end), the middle of her marriage (recently repaired). And despite the years that have passed since she last saw her daughter, she is still very much in the middle of figuring out what happened to Leda, what role she played, and how she will let that loss affect the rest of her life. Enter a mysterious stranger on a train, an older man taking the subway to Brooklyn who sees right into her. Then a mugging, her phone stolen, and with it any last connection to Leda. And then an invitation, friends from the past and a weekend in the country with their new, unexpected baby. Over the course of three hot September days, the two couples try to reconnect. Events that have been set in motion, circumstances and feelings kept hidden, rise to the surface, forcing each to ask not just how they ended up where they are, but how they ended up who they are. Unwinding like a suspense novel, Joanna Hershon's St. Ivo is a powerful investigation into the meaning of choice and family, whether we ever know the people closest to us, and how, when someone goes missing from our lives, we can ever let them go.
Andric, Ivo- Ex Ponto / Unruhen

With World War II still raging, nations came together to create a new international monetary order, the Bretton Woods system. This agreement created the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and a system of stable exchange rates with currencies pegged against the dollar. One man saw the political, economic, and moral tensions inherent in keeping the dollar, a national currency, as a global reserve currency. When the monetary arrangement collapsed in 1973, economist Robert Triffin had already predicted its downfall two decades previously. Robert Triffin, a Belgian-American scholar and policy advisor, was a defining voice in economics and international politics in the twentieth century and an architect of the new multilateral liberal world order in his own right. Best known for his analysis of the vulnerabilities of the international monetary system - the "Triffin dilemma" - Triffin was a voice of reason and compassion in the postwar period. Triffin played a key role in the debates on European monetary integration, especially with his proposals for a European Reserve Fund and a European currency unit, becoming one of the intellectual fathers of Europe's single currency, the euro. This intellectual biography evaluates what made Triffin a crucial figure in modern economic history. With an emphasis on the ideas that shaped the postwar international system, Robert Triffin: A Life explores both the man and the mission. In addition to analyzing his work in economics and policymaking, Ivo Maes and Ilaria Pasotti trace Triffin's story from a very modest background, as the son of a butcher, who grew up through the interwar period, to a singularly influential economist in the late twentieth century. The first biography of one of the intellectual giants of the postwar era, Robert Triffin critically examines the accomplishments and the legacy of a scholar who believed that innovations in economic policy could lead to a better and more peaceful world.
